Murray Spivack used to teach flams with the grace note hand very low, like an inch above the drum, and you just let both sticks fall at the same time. Also, it's worth practicing both alternating flams and flams leading with the same hand, as they have slightly different technical requirements (and one of my teachers opined that the latter is usually better on acoustic drums, as alternating flams will sound less consistent due to slight differences in stick weight). The proper rudimental name for the flam triplet is flam accent.

I really like the sound of flams, specially on the toms.

Thank you for teaching me what a flam is, another one to put in my air drum repertoire since I never touched a drum kit in my life. Now when I hear a flam on a song I secretly congratulate myself on knowing what the vast majority of humans are totally oblivious to.

You're saving my ass, I agreed to drum for an established band but I am over a decade out of practice, I practice these techniques for several hours a day

Emma! I need your recommendation: I'd like to learn to double pedal but don't know which is easiest to learn on. They all feel so different and there's huge gaps in price too.

I'm not Emma, but here are my two cents anyway: Make sure the pedal you get at least lets you set the beater angle as well as the spring tension. I recently bought a pretty cheap Gibraltar pedal for like 300 bucks as a backup. Iron Cobras are also still good. Pearl eliminators are another staple you can't go wrong with. If a pedal lets you adjust the beater angle and the spring tension, you can change the feel a lot. A good rule of thumb to start on or even to try out pedals at the store: place your feet on the footboard heel up, so that your only point of contact is the ball of your foot. Adjust spring tension / beater angle until you can fully rest your leg on the pedals and the weight of your leg pushes the beater a couple cm to the playing surface, but not fully. This will give you a tension that is not super high but high enough to hold your legs up. There are of course many more ways to setup your pedal, but this is a starting point from where you can try out different things (higher or lower spring tension / beater angle). If you're a very large person with heavy legs you might want to replace the stock springs with heavier ones to make the process described above easier. Hope this helped a little bit.

@@coiLz0r911bury the beater and then you don't have to worry about most of that lol

@@lobbyrobby another option of course, is burying the beater and being done with it. less complicated, more room for variance and uncertainty with the settings for beginners

@@coiLz0r911 I only say that because I bury the beater. I've worked on trying not to but it seems impossible.

@@lobbyrobby Well, not burying the beater is definitely more difficult for most people. If you ever want to go back to it, using the above mentioned method might help, because keeping the beater off the head with low to no spring tension is definitely more difficult. But burying the beater is mostly fine anyway, unless you want a specific "off the head" bassdrum sound or are looking to play with triggers
