Thanks. This was helpful. I do still find myself saying negative things about the kids mother in front of them. I try to repair it and say something genuinely nice when I catch myself doing it, but it still will be hard for them. They didn't even get a choice .

Okay? Never. Ask any kid 10, 20, 30, 40,years later from a broken family, they will tell you all,you need to know. No one, and I mean no one escapes the detrimental effect divorce has on kids ( outside abusive situations). Single parent households are the most destructive construct ever invented by society, cause divorce is to easy today.

What you've just said is a really common way the human brain defers responsibility to avoid having to change. If your kids are screwed, then you can stay in the oddly comfortable, vindictive helplessness, and you get to be angry at your ex for the divorce. If there is an opportunity to make this right for your children by facing your grief, getting your own emotions handled and showing up calm, emotionally available, fully present and engaged with your kids... well that's an awful lot of work. Unfortunately most people choose not to do it and take the easier victimhood route instead.
