On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at around 11:00 a.m., Las Cruces police were advised of a pursuit involving New Mexico State Police officers and a white Chevy Suburban driven by 47 year old Bobby Crawford. Officers learned Crawford had felony warrants for his arrest and was refusing to stop for NMSP officers. The warrants for Crawford’s arrest were for violating terms of his probation along with other felony crimes. Las Cruces Police officers assisted State Police in the pursuit which ended with a PIT Maneuver, near the intersection of Holman Road and Arroyo Road. According to the investigation, Crawford fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers. Two officers narrowly missed being struck by gunfire. As a result 3 Las Cruces Police officers fired their service weapons. Crawford was struck by at least one of those rounds. Shortly after the shooting, a red Mustang, driven by Crawford wife, drove on scene before officers swiftly detained her. Crawford refused to comply with commands given by officers for over 40 minutes. Officers deployed Tear gas along with a flash bang during the standoff. Crawford eventually exited the SUV and was detained before being provided with first aid before he was airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment. The weapon Crawford used was recovered. Crawford is currently behind bars awaiting trial.
