Wanted Felon Miraculously Survives Barrage of Gunfire After Shooting at Pursuing Officers

Las Cruces, New Mexico
On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at around 11:00 a.m., Las Cruces police were advised of a pursuit involving New Mexico State Police officers and a white Chevy Suburban driven by 47 year old Bobby Crawford. Officers learned Crawford had felony warrants for his arrest and was refusing to stop for NMSP officers. The warrants for Crawford’s arrest were for violating terms of his probation along with other felony crimes. Las Cruces Police officers assisted State Police in the pursuit which ended with a PIT Maneuver, near the intersection of Holman Road and Arroyo Road. According to the investigation, Crawford fired multiple rounds at pursuing officers. Two officers narrowly missed being struck by gunfire. As a result 3 Las Cruces Police officers fired their service weapons. Crawford was struck by at least one of those rounds. Shortly after the shooting, a red Mustang, driven by Crawford wife, drove on scene before officers swiftly detained her. Crawford refused to comply with commands given by officers for over 40 minutes. Officers deployed Tear gas along with a flash bang during the standoff. Crawford eventually exited the SUV and was detained before being provided with first aid before he was airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment. The weapon Crawford used was recovered. Crawford is currently behind bars awaiting trial.

I lived there for years and it was one of the most beautiful places I ever lived. In winter I would walk along, looking up at snow falling that evaporated before it got to me. El Paso is a 30 minute drive, Cloud Croft is about an hour away, there were military bases in the desert on the other side of the Organ Mountains so we had ALL kinds of military aircraft flying over, and every road that leads out of Las Cruces has a great place to hike, camp, take photographs, great restaurants and the entire area is steeped in the Mexican culture. And right up the highway, to the West, is Hatch, NM where they grow the absolute best chile peppers in the entire world.

I think that dude it that tall. Look at the size of his feet compared to the guy in front of him. And the other officer to his left is lookin up at him while they're talking. That boy never misses a meal. They probably brought him along in case the suspect got stuck in a tree.

I have no sympathy for the perp but the end was a bit ridiculous having a perp who has been shot , with his arms out laying on his stomach then demand that he crawl 20 yards on his stomach. for what?. The officers had shields. Surprised they didn't make him do a field sobriety test.

It was because they weren't certain that there was no one else in his vehicle. Either the drone operator wasn't skilled enough to fly it inside through one of the open windows, or the drone was too large to fit. The cops can't go up and drag him to where they want him, while also watching the windows for any sign of movement. Divided attention can kill.

Seems to me that with two drones they could easily fly around the vehicle and look inside. Besides, they have shields and an armored vehicle on site. The time to be overly cautious is while the perp is shooting not when he is laid out on the ground bleeding with his hands out. @@adamellis6785

​@@adamellis6785 There was a whole department on scene. A couple guys could run up to grab him while somebody with the rifle is trained on the car. It's not rocket science, these guys were just dumb and scared as Hell.
