My Answers 1. Sometimes, you really forget that it's dubbed. And when the voice of actors switch, it's because of the personality of the character. 2. I have no explanation for that either. 3. I think all of you know the song Zombie by Cranberries. I always understanded "Zahn weh" instead of "Zomby " 4. I prefer the version in the US. But our version is just normal for me. 5. It bother me not it all! I'm talking English pretty often with my sister. So it's normal for me. And you recognize it, if the person is speaking it not so long, or pretty long/good. 6. I would prefer "sie" because often, they are older than me. 7. We got those screens. And in my class, a bird flew in and was totally scared! But we had a ranger who told us something about his job and he helped that little guy. I think you recognized that my English is not the best. That's cause I'm (what a surprise) German

Ich hatte erst ab der 6. Englisch und bei uns ist das eigentlich Standard. Ich hab kein Problem damit, wenn Leute mich etwas auf engisch fragen möchten, aber es ist trotzdem höflich vorher zu fragen, ob der Gegenüber überhaupt englisch spricht. Ich finde, wenn die Leute nicht fragen kommt das so ein bisschen arrogant rüber, so als ob sie davon ausgehen würden, dass sowieso jeder ihre Sprache spricht...

About music, well basically after i've learned english at school, alot of the popular english songs started to make sense to me, before it was just gibberish to me, missheard lyrics. "Alle lieben Mirko" became "I believe in Miracles", "Agathe Bauer" became "I got the power", etc... With the internet those songs suddenly made much much MUCH more sense to me, because i just could google the lyrics and read them in detail. Although after learning english, my hearing for the english language isn't as great as the one of a native speaker and i still have to read some lyrics online if i want to fully understand what the song's about, especially if the singer uses slang, dialect or accent. Speaking about dialect, comming from Niedersachsen, the place of "Hochdeutsch", i also have trouble with heavy German dialect. I remember when i was shopping and i heard two pretty old German people talking to eachother and i honestly didn't understand one word. How are you with German dialects? Are they worse or just as bad as in the US? ;)

A word on German music as heard by an English speaker: when I was a child, I heard some songs on the radio which, although from Europe, were popular with my parents’ generation. One of those was “Bei Mir Bist du Schön,” which means “To me you’re beautiful,” but since I hadn’t studied any German yet (I had a fourth of a year of it in 7th grade, in a class of introductions to four languages), I heard the first line as “My dear Mr. Shane,” which caused the subsequent English lyrics to make no sense at all! By coincidence, there was a popular cowboy TV series with the title character named Shane at the time.

Hier nervt es einige, dass Dezimalzahlen mit einem Punkt oder mit einem Komma geschrieben werden. Viel interessanter ist die Schreibweise des Datums. Meines Wissens wird ausschließlich oder fast ausschließlich in englischsprachigen Ländern die Sequenz Monat, Tag, Jahr verwendet. In allen anderen Ländern schreibt man entweder Tag, Monat, Jahr oder Jahr, Monat, Tag. Meine ehemalige Firma hat sehr viel exportiert. Um Unstimmigkeiten zu vermeiden, wurde der Monat immer in Worten oder in römischen Zahlen angegeben. Die englische Schreibweise des Datums erscheint mir einfach unsinnig oder gar unlogisch.

Ich habe für einen Hersteller für Schiffsantriebe gearbeitet. Ein Auftraggeber aus den USA wollte bei uns Schiffsschrauben bestelle. Sämtliche Maße der Schrauben waren in amerikanischen Einheiten angegeben, sogar die Drehmomente. Natürlich war der Liefertermin in amerikanischer Datumsschreibweise angegeben. Da es sich um einen Millionenauftrag handelte, rief meine Sekretärin doch sicherheitshalber an. Man fragte sie, ob sie das Imperial system nicht kenne. Auf die Idee, dass sie selbst den Weltstandard nicht beherrschten, kamen unsere US- freunde nicht.

Hi Dana! Dubbing movies: an actor can have different german speakers due to a lot of reason. A speaker died or is out of buisness (e. g. retired or beeing sick) or is not available because he is under contract with a corporation that does not allow him to do any other job.

Warum Leute in unterschiedlichen Filmen unterschiedliche Stimmen haben ist genauso unterschiedlich wie die Stimmen selbst. Bei Benedict Cumberbatch ist es zB so, dass der Sprecher, der ihn in Sherlock spricht, ihn bei Doctor Strange nicht sprechen konnte, weil er halt im Marvel Universum Thor spricht. Und es ist wirklich immer so ein ziemlich seltsamer Moment, wenn man dann die Originalstimmen hört. Das seltsamste was mir mit englischer Musik passiert ist, ist aus einem Fall Out Boy Lied, bei dem ich an einer Stelle immer "I carry carrots for everyone to see" verstanden habe, was echt null in den Context passt. Wegen Geburtstagen? Keine Ahnung. Aber immerhin wenn ich Geburtstag habe, schmeiss ich nun mal die Party und es wär ja irgendwie doof, wenn die Leute, die ich mir einlade dann dafür aufkommen müssen, oder nicht? Wenn mich jemand auf Englisch anspricht, ist das ehrlich gesagt nicht so ein Problem für mich und im Endeffekt ist es mir egal, ob er oder sie von der Muttersprache her Englisch spricht oder halt nur so aus Spass und als Fremdsprache.

1. Well one (sad) reason is when the voice actor dies, the other one is with unfamous actors, so the studios dont bother "saving" a voice. 2. About the speaking in english: Well, I have absolutely no problem with talking in english. I switch between the languages without thinking. English even comes easier to me, somehow. Duzen in the restaurant: It really depends on the restaurant if you will hear it at all. If you are at your "regular Pizza place" and the waiter already can guess that you will want your Pizza with salami, extra cheese, ham, extra cheese, maize and extra cheese, then it is perfectly fine. But if you go to a "fancy" restaurant, it is extremely unlikely to even hear it. At least that is my experience. With the screens: Well, we had those once, but they broke all the time. And since we took them away, I at least have a feeling like the air "blows better" ;) The birds... well... at least once per year. Sadly, sometimes they fly in unnoticed and hide somewhere in some corner where you won´t look for a loooooong time. But once, one bird came in, while we were sitting at the dinner table and the bird wanted to steal a noodle Oo... then it flew out again... So birds are nothing new to me. I simply open the windows (if they are closed already) and try to "chase" it out. More curious was the bat that once gave me a visit Oo

Q1: Voices are not dubbed, we call it "synchronized", because it is done that well. You can't call that just dubbing. Voices are different depending on their roles, however, in a series, of course, the same voice a is always speaking the same actor. But it happens at times, fortunately in rare cases only, you hear the same voice on another actor, that why in synchronizing, the actors who do it, try to change their voices according to the role. Q2: The English speaking people in the US are the only ones who neither use the metric system nor write the numbers as like as the Germans do, Therefore your question is put terribly wrong. Yo must not ask the Germans, why they write it like that, instead you have to ask the US people why they don't adapt to the international common system (which is writing numbers as like as Germans do, and using the metric system). Btw numbers and their writing is no speech ... hence a comma is no pause and a period is no stop Q3: English text in songs often is nothing but crap, especially in former times (and so are lyrics in other languages in songs, too). But I am an "old" man of 50 years, younger people may feel different about that topic. As I see it, we are in Germany, where the difference between "Sie" and "Du" is usual already for many centuries, so why weaken that? Only because most of the youngsters are too lazy or too uneducated to show some respect? In my opinion this actually is disrespecting the customer or any stranger. However, that rule is different in certains groups or unions, i.e. among sports people of the same kind of sports, they all say "Du", no matter strangers or not, because the same sports "connects" them. Nonetheless that doesn't enable them to use "Du" also to strangers outside their own group. That again would be impolite. Q7: In our climate zone, we do not have as many bugs and insects as like as it is in the US, so we usually don't need screens. Some people have 'em, though. :-) Q7a: Yes, a bird has already landed on my books inside my home ... but usually birds find their way out very quickly :-) (as soon as they notice the presence of human beings) Q8: I used to live in SEA (South East Asia) for over 10 years. I basically agree to nearly all answers and just want to add to the Q6, that - to me - it´s a matter of age, if it´s considered impolite already if a waiter/waitress serves a guest by using "Du" instead of "Sie". To your answer in Q8 I am curious to know why South East Asia is a "much better place" to live than Germany. I personally dislike a "damp" and "very hot" weather. Neverheless I admit, that the too mild winters without much snow in large parts of Germany isn´t any better either. As a South-Eastern Bavarian all I miss is only a nice coastal line and a real winter, though. But again, what exactly (taking the weather aside) is better in South East Asia than in Germany? I gave the hint to the fact the youth thinks different to the use of "Du". However, it is impolite though, a kind of disrespect. It's a complete other world when a language itself doesn't know such a difference in word so f addressing someone, however, then usually there are more different forms how to treat and shape the language one uses to make clear that the speaker is respecting the listener. German language lacks such possibilities, there is only "Du and "Sie" to make it clear, that's when just using "Du" is impolite, if being used without the agreement of the listener. It can never be a matter of age, exactly that is the wrong attitude. How can a servant dare to address me, a customer and a stranger, with "Du" ?? That is highly impolite, even rude. It would be, of course, another case if the servant and I already know each other in private life as friends or similar. The youth using "Du" always and everywhere is a damn bad consequence of impolitely using "Du" everywhere on the internet. I feel very insulted if any internet provider addresses me with "Du". That's impertinent, because I am neither a kid nor the provider's friend. Being addressed with "Du" by strangers truly is disrespect. And those who don't comprehend that, still do have a lot to learn when it comes to good manners. SEA is much better because Germans are a folk of fucking traitors. Private people as well as the politicians. South East Asian people aren't, they simply don't care about you as long as you don't cause any issues. But in Germany, all neighbors are looking at what you do and immediately call the police or have you prosecuted if you don't behave exactly by all laws. Besides, in SEA you have much more freedom to do as you like it than in Germany, where living is completely over-ruled by law.

I also think that's not depending on being German, American or else. It just depends on who decides to pay. There is no overall rule and everybody does it different. When I invite my friends this year and I like to celebrate my birthday I do offer drinks and food. A different person says "hey guys, I'm really not into birthday parties but we can do something together" and some people can bring cake, snacks or drinks" and next year you decide to celebrate with your closest friends and invite them to the restaurant. @Wanted Adventure I know this is probably a bit late for commenting, but maybe I'm lucky, and you read this comment still. I am a german studying in England (currently back in Germany because of Corona). I think you started right with comparing numbers and sentences for the usage of commas and dots to split up the "whole" parts of a quantity and the decimals, but frankly, I also think you have the wrong conclusion. So as you said, the comma is used to make a pause and the full stop to end a sentence. Where you can use a comma to split main phrases and side phrases or two or more main phrases apart a full stop can not come in to separate a side phrase to stand on its own. I am using whole numbers as a comparison to main phrases as they are theoretically completed in themselves and decimals as side phrases as they are not. This would mean that you could not separate the side phrase (decimal/-s) from the primary sentence (whole number/-s) with a full stop, as that would in writing not make grammatical sense (and therefore no logical sense in maths (numbers)). Also, it seems to me more logical that you would make a full stop after a completed unit of a thousand or one million (1.000 or 1.000.000) and a small pause after the last full working unit before you finish the small rest (0,235). I hope you could follow my logic as sometimes I get told that I confuse people more than help. I also hope it makes sense. If you have any further questions about anything German or so, you can ask me, and I'll just make my head around it and send you an answer later. I like your videos, and I only reply to this one aspect as I didn't want to write an essay, which by now I already have :) :( . Paul Engelmann.

The points in numbers in germany are no must. You can ad them for better reading. The comma is indeed a critical information. If you do handwriting many pens make just very tiny points, they are easy to overlook. Now think you are in hospital and a nurse gives you e.g. medicamentation according to something handwritten by the doctor. Would you feel more save with the german way or the american way? I guess handwritten 1.5 clysters a day is more dangerous than 1,5 clysters :-)

The commas are not mandatory in English either. Well, except where they are. But there isn't a law (federal or state, although I'm not sure about all states ;-)). The only documents that might (and would) require you to separate thousands would be some standards documents. But then, if you had to follow these standards in what you do, you'd know.

I think olafspetzki's point is that the comma is easier to see than the period, and so it is put in the place where it's most important to notice the punctuation. Punctuation between parts of large numbers isn't vital, it just helps you read it more easily. Punctuation between the unit and the decimal is more likely to be vital, such as in the example of dosage of medicine - if you don't see the punctuation (because a handwritten period could be almost invisible, depending on pen and style), you'll wind up taking 10x the correct dose. So the more-visible comma is the logical choice for that position. I am impressed by this reasoning. For the numbers, I think the komma makes more sense to mark the break between full number and decimals because it's the more important mark in the number. If the colour fades or the ink is smudged, the komma is more likely to still be distinguishable than a period. Are you actually reading all the comments? because it seems like they are getting out of hand, lol. 15.000 is near :D Anyway, When you brought up the example of sentences on the question of numbers, I realized something. Yes, a dot is marking the end of a sentence. BUT in German, there is something called "Hauptsatz" and "Nebensatz". I didn't come up with this before, but I explained a friend from the US, who wants to learn German, what the basic difference is. A "Hauptsatz" has it's verb on the second positon of the sentence and is- therebefore- a sentence. It can stand alone. But often that sentence gets an addition, mostly it's a "Nebensatz". And these cannot be alone. So, like: "Er wusste nicht, dass es Bauarbeiten auf der Strecke gab." Taking this to numbers (let's say 98.210,56356), the 98.210 is a full number and can stand alone, but the , is followed by something that cannot exist by itself- like a "nebensatz". it's a "broken addition".

In Croatia it is common to invite people to celebrate with you your birthday and you, as the organizor pay for the set up of the party, food , drinks etc. People bring you gifts, and that makes it your special day, you treat them with food, and they bring you gifts

Its not meant to be impolite but rather to create a "familiar" and friendly environment, where they waiters arent your "servants" (meant in a bad way) and you and them are on the same step. Bei Ikea gehört das allerdings zum kulturellen Selbstverständnis des Unternehmens. Ich spreche (oder verstehe) kein Schwedisch, aber wenn ich richtig informiert bin, wird es als unhöflich distanzierend erachtet, wenn Kunden nicht geduzt werden. In der Gastronomie ist es relativ üblich bei eher "informellen" Lokalitäten (Diskotheken, Bars, einige Fast Food-Läden), je förmlicher das Etablissement, desto unwahrscheinlicher, dass der Kunde geduzt wird. In Supermärkten etc. ziemlich unüblich. Ich wurde vor einer Weile einmal von einer Kassiererin geduzt und war völlig perplex. Möglicherweise war das eine subtile Sympathiebekundung und ich hätte "zurück"flirten sollen. :D

Based on the third question (about the dots in numbers): In germany the symbol for multiplication is a dot too, but its in the middle ( ⋅ ). It's called the "Malpunkt" (multiplication dot). Because there is no big difference between the "normal" dot and the multipication dot you can mix up those two easily and that would be quite bad. Normally in germany we don't use the dots every three characters, we just use nothing or a simple space. The comma indeed is important and will never miss in any decimal number. And because it'd be confusing using a dot we just use commas. That'll be the reason.

I agree with Dana. Also, just because most use it doesn't mean it it makes sense. Commas are pauses and periods are stop. The commas between numbers are for convenience. It is not necessary, just makes it easier to read. Drop the decimal point for the less than one spots and the number means an entirely different thing. Example: 1,000.54 is the same as 1000.54 but not 100054. I have a deal, the US adopts the Metric system and the rest of the countries put the comma and period in the correct spot in numbers. How about it?

Birthdays: I think you had mentioned the difference in meaning between inviting/treating and einladen. German and mostly European courtesy runs along the line that if you invite someone and he sacrifices some of his time for you than it is your job to treat that person as a guest, meaning you make it as convenient as possible and usually deal with the bills too. So if you are the host of a party or are the host to meet in some restaurant, etc then it your responsibility not to surprise your guests with nasty bills, etc Now at the other hand it is completely common to invite someone on his birthday and treat him to coffee or whatever, but in that case the birthday boys and girls are invited and thus treated by someone else. So basic rule that whoever is the host pay the bills still applies on birthdays, actually especially at birthdays as your guests are already supposed to do something special for you and bring gifts, etc same on weddings btw, which are even more special days … and in that case the american habits align even with the germans, right? ;-) And yes, the pens are awesome. And yes, birds and bats in the house. The bats are really tricky to get out, birds are easy, they get tired real fast from running away from the cats. I am kidding … not about the bats and birds, but we don't throw the cats on the birds … though sometimes the cats bring the birds ;-)

Schonmal im Ausland einen Film gesehen, der zb aus Hollywood kommt und dir die Synchro in die dortige Muttersprache angehört? Da wird null auf Lippensynchro geachtet und teilweise wird nur über das Tonband gesprochen, sodass man im Hintergrund noch laut und deutlich die Originalstimmen hört, wie bei einem Interview mit Übersetzung zb. Deutschland hat mit Abstand die beste Synchronisationsindustrie der Welt. Erst informieren, bevor man hatet. Ich empfehle das Video zur Videospielsynchronisation von David Hain hier auf KZbin. The ‘du’ thing depends on the place you are at. In an upper class restaurant this will not happen but burger restaurant and “younger” restaurants do this, to create a deeper bond with the customer and the du is never meant disrespectful.
