The judge said in his order that it was ineffective, but it is unfortunately the maximum fine allowable under New York State Law. And immediate jail time is allowable but not necessarily a good thing. Judge Merchan does not want to leave any avenues for appeal open, and he wants to establish a clear pattern of giving Trump sufficient warning first before jailing him.

Yeah. That's the maximum in New York courts. It's fair in cases where some poorer person makes an outburst in court--gets the fine and then shut-ups after that--what normal people would do. Usually judges just have to warn them and they stop.

Well, can the judge add additional gag orders on to state that he is not to talk about the case in public?

The court should have the power to double the fine for each successive breach of the order. That would mean the fine would be $512k instead of $9k

I don't care what the legal experts say that are on retainer in this segment. Behavior should have consequences. This penalty is a joke to Bone Spurs.
