All electric locomotives WAG or WAM or WAP classes are all powered by 25,000V AC (25KV AC) supply from overhead power lines. All diesel (WDG, WDM, WDP and YDP) locomotives are actually electric locomotives with electric power power supply coming generated with diesel generators on the locomotive. Between Egmore and Villupuram I remember travelling by a train, which had the electric locomotives which was called YAM. These locomotives were imported from Japan and was manufactured by a consortium of three Japanese companies Misubishi, Toshiba and Hitachi. I remember seeing all these companies logos stuck on this locomotives. But after Villupuram, all trains were hauled by YDM class locomotives. Last YDM class locomotives I had seen on SR were from Thiruvarur to Karaikkudi ten years back. Today YDM class locomotives are running only in Gujarat where a track passing through Gir Forests (only Sanctuaryfor lions in india) one passenger train goes through. Add one more class of electric locomotives we had in Bombay division of CR. We has WCM class of locomotives. Bombay, in both Western Railway from Churchgate to Virar (60 km) and on Central Railway from Bombay VT to Kalyan and then branches to Igatpuri (121 km) and Poona (192 kms) they had power supply of 1500 V DC supply. All local trains in Bombay division were running on this 1500V DC supply. So since British era CR was running with WCM class locomotives powered by 1500V DC supply for hauling long distance trains. Here C meant (electric) current supply. Later at Poona and Igatpuri the locomotives were changed to diesel electric locomotives. But WR Mail trains were all hauled by diesel electric locomotives from Bombay Central station as it was not feasible to change locomotives at just 60 km. But beyond Virar and to Ahmedabad Railways had already electrified the tracks with 25KV AC lines and electric locomotives running there WAM or WAG class running on 25KV AC could not brought into Bombay area. So railways brought in a new class of locomotives called WCAM which can be operated on both 1500V DC lines as well as 25KV AC lines. So these locomotives started operations around 1973 hauling trains to Ahmedabad and Delhi via Baroda from Bombay Central on the WR. In fact both Beach Tambaram lines in SR and a few local trains in Calcutta were initially operating on 1500V DC but without difficulty they supply was converted to 25KV AC supply and all local trains too were converted to run on such supply. In early 1960s SR extended the electric lines on metre gauge tracks to Villupuram and imported YAM class locomotives from Japan to run all trains with these locomotives as they did not want coal steam engines to come inside Egmore Tambaram section.

அய்யா ஒரே ஒரு விஷயம் தவறாக உள்ளது..அதுவும் முழுமையாக தவறில்லை..horse power குறித்து நீங்கள் சொல்லியது சில தவறுகள் உள்ளது..1, 2, 3 அப்படின்னா எல்லா என்ஜின்லயுமே அது Horse power குறிக்காது. உதாரணமாக WAP1 3800, WAP4 5050, WAP5 5900, WAP7 6350 HP கொண்ட என்ஜின்கள் தானே தவிர 1000, 4000, 5000, 7000 HP இல்லை, இதெல்லாம் முதல் தலைமுறை, இரண்டாம் தலைமுறை என Generation 1,4,5,7 தான். அதே சமயம் WAG9, 12 போன்றவை 9000, 12000 HP கொண்டவை தான்

ஐயா சில தவறான பதிவுகள். Nilgiri mountain railways (mettupalysm - 0oty) is MG and not NG. First letter W- Broad gauge; Y- MG (not yard); Z-NG only in narel- matheran in CR has this devistion.NG is Z universally. The steam loco (MG) we see in nilgiri is "X " class original swiss way of loco classification. Not changed to MG naming standard due to UNESCO Heritage tag that NMR has. The third letter in addition to P, M,G, there is "S" denoting shunting locos. We had WDS and YDS. In steam locos the middle letter is not followed. We had YP, YG, WP,WG. We still have "C" and "CA" as middle Letter. "C" is DC electric loco and "CA" is locos capable of working in DC and AC current. We had WCMx few years back and WCAM x still in pune/ Nasik Mumbai ghat section. Mumbai regin was having DC traction 10 years back and was an electrical island(isolated fron rest of India with AC current). WCM and WCAM locos wee dominating mimbsi region 15 years back. Neenga sollura 1 is 1000 HP 2 is 2000 HP is applicable to locos which were designed after July 2002. Prior to that 1, 2 3 etc were version, A B etc refers to modifications. The horse power of YDM4 is 1400 HP, YDM4A is the slightly modified version of YDM4. The horsepower of WDM7 is 1977 HP. WAP4 is 5000 HP, WAP5 is 6000 HP, WAG5 is 3900 HP, WAG7 is 5000 HP, WAG9 is 6125 HP.

The letter after HP number is not correct for example xxx6A does not mean 6100 HP. It means different technical variant of that loco(like change gear ratio,dual cab, etc) Narrow gauge locos have “Z” prefix and not “X” as mentioned by you. Please visit IRFCA website. We have taken lot of effort to collate loco details ad published. Even railway officials refer to our website for historical information . The “X” mentioned in steam locos of NMR classification steam locos and is not IR standard. It follows old Swiss classification. Nilagiri mountain railways(NMR) is MG and you will find old YDM4 locos operating between Connor and Ooty. Also 2nd letter “C” means DC current locos ( these loos are found in Mumbai Pune/Nasik ghat sections.)AC an DC capable locos have “WCAM..” notations. please verify you facts before uploading.

Ooty train is meter gauge, the loco used is YDM-4 which is a Meter gauge loco. Tamilnadu does not have Narrow gauge.

Additionally these tracks on the Mettupalayam Ooty line has a third line in the middle with ratchet and with pinion fitted on the locomotives. This ratchet pinion system prevents the train slipping backwards while climbing up the steep slope on the mountain rail.

Also standard gauge (1435 mm) tracks are now in operation in Delhi and Bangalore metro lines, Delhi Meerut rapid train service and other metro trains in other cities in India. Bombay Ahmedabad bullet train now under construction will also have Standard gauge tracks. Like India, Broad gauge tracks are there in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Argentina in South America and few other countries.

In Bangladesh, both metre gauge trains as well as broad gauge train are in operation. In some sections the Bangladesh Railways have three rail tracks where both broad gauge trains as well as metre gauge trains on same tracks.

இதைத் தமிழில் மொழி பெயர்த்து கொள்ளவும். They are electrically coupled with special couplers called amphenol couplers. The circuitry in each loco is such that when the leading is controlled in any manner, either to increase the power to the motors, or to apply brakes, that action is faithfully repeated in the next coupled loco even if is unmanned.

one point you forgot to mention, if the second letter is C its DC loco. WCAM loco is both AC and DC.

This WCAM series were introduced specifically on WR to run inside Bombay from Bombay central to Virar on 1500V DC supply and then without change of locomotives, beyond Virar on 25KV AC supply to Ahmedabad etc.

You missed one important loco WCAM where it can run in both DC and AC current especially in the route of mumbai-pune (Deccan queen puller) 2. WDAP (Diesel cum AC) similar to WDP-4D look alike

The Western Railway for first time this series of WCAM locomotives in 1973 and they are unique in Bombay Division of CR and WR alone and they have interesting background story. When electric lines were introduced in India before independence, there were limited lines in Bombay suburban lines, old Beach to Tambaram in TN and a few suburban lines in Calcutta. They were all powered by 1500V DC power lines along the traction poles. Later when Indian Railways decided to introduce more electric lines, they decided to opt for more efficient 25000V AC (25KV AC) supply instead of existing 1500V DC supply. They quickly converted to 25KV the existing lines in Beach Tambaram lines and in Calcutta. On metre gauge, Beach to Tambaram electric lines were extended to Villupuram with 25KV AC power supply. You had YAM series electric locomotives imported from Japan on trains from Egmore to Villupuram. But Bombay Poona (192 km) Bombay Igatpuri (121 km) on CR and Churchgate Virar (60 km) railways could not convert as Bombay had extensive network of local trains and all trains ran only on 1500V DC supply and Railways could not stop all train services to convert as they were life lines in Bombay's citizens. CR had also locomotives to run long distance trains, WCM series, the oldest electric locomotives, initially imported from UK, later manufactured at Chitatanjan Loco Works in WB. These locos hauled trains from Bombay to Poona and later changed to diesel electric beyond Poona to Madras, Hyderabad, etc. Also these WCM locomotives hauled trains Bombay to Igatpuri and beyond Igatpuri to Bushaval changed to diesel electric engines and later after laying electric lines by WAM or WAG series locomotives. Then the Virar to Ahmedabad line was electrified with 25KV AC and those WAM and WAG locomotives there could not enter Bombay beyond Virar as Churchgate, Bombay Central to Virar already had 1500V DC supply and all local trains were running on this supply and so WR was still using diesel electric engines for trains from BombayCentral to Ahmedabad and Delhi via Baroda. On WR also, Railways wanted to introduce electric locomotives from Bombay Central to go to Ahmedabad and Delhi. So CLW made and gave them to WR and WR introduced the new and unique WCAM series locomotives capable of drawing power from both 1500V DC and 25KV AC power lines and these were hauling trains from Bombay Central to Ahmedabad without interruption. Then more locomotives of WCAM series were made by BHEL and given to CR as their WCM locomotives were ageing beyond their life and CR also introduced them on Bombay Igatpuri and Bombay Poona lines. Later in early 2000, entire Bombay Division on Both CR and WR, the entire electrical power supply system was changed in stages to 25KV AC and all existing local trains were also modified to run on this supply. Now, all long distance trains are now hauled by WAP7, WAP4 etc., from Bombay to all over India. Presently all WCAM series locomotives in service are only name sake but now entirely run on 25KV AC.

LHB நீளம் அதிகம். எடை குறைவு. பிரச்சினை குறைவான ஜன்னல்கள். Toilet மட்டும் காற்றோட்டம் இல்லை.

In sleepers, LHB coaches have 80 berths instead of 72 in old coaches. AC3 have 8 extra berths and AC2 have 6 more berths. The gangway at gates are wider. They no longer have heavy lead acid batteries with dynamo attached to axle of wheels. Only smaller batteries are provided for emergency lighting. Power in all LHB train comes from EOG car or HOG from WAP7 locomotives.
