Such a thing of beauty to watch. Such a pity, the stress fracture. I watched this as a boy in India, and couldn't believe my eyes. The smoothness, the pace, the swing and pride of it. Legend.

had a smooth run up but the thing that distinguished him was the late swing. See many deliveries how late they swinged. I have not seen many or rather any bowler swing it that late. How he did it was a surprise. That is the reason why the accusations of "bowl tampering" began to surface when Waqar Younis started swinging it so late.

What so many people don't understand is what a fine batting line up England had in the 90's. Alec Stewart, Mike Atherton, Graham Gooch and David Gower is wonderful batsman, and Waqar ran through them like a hot knife through butter. Extreme pace.

@wonderwall S Alec Stewart is one of the finest openers England ever produced. He averages 40 as an opener in bowling friendly conditions. Most Subcontinent openers average the same or in early 40's with the exception of Gavaskar.
@wonderwalls3565 Жыл бұрын
@@Warlock786 ever produced? do you know what ever produced mean?. His average is less than 40. Do you know what an average of 40 means in a test match? It means 20 runs per innings. this is not considered best through any specs. Also why did you compare ones home ground stats with other batsmen away stats?
@Warlock786 Жыл бұрын
@wonderwall S you clearly haven't seen many matches that took place in the 90's' nor do you seem to know the role of an opener. Opener is the hardest position to play is often times openers have the lowest averages. That coupled with batting in bowling friendly conditions against the greatest bowlers who ever lived. These were not Indian pitches that give almost no help to fast bowlers. There were finer bowlers who peaked in the 90's than at any point in history.

Now everyone who has been fortunate enough to have seen this guy in his prime. You will all relate to his genius talent and speed. People talk of the Shoaibs Lees and Stayens. This guy on song was express and absolutely fast back in 92. Even though he already had a stress fracture of his back. To me if they had used speed guns then this demon was clocking 97 98 99 or even 100 mph then

Agreed. He was easily above 150kph before 1992

I totally agree with this - in the early 90s his pace was extreme - what was all the more remarkable was he was generally bowling a full length, which usually looks slower than short pitched bowling. Don't think he got the credit for that which he deserved. In England at least, commentators at the time were mostly old England players wedded to the idea that Jeff Thompson was the fastest ever (perhaps because they had faced him) and reluctant to admit that a Pakistan bowler could be faster. Too bad speed guns were not around then
@codyjackson566426 күн бұрын
I don't think it was more than about 93 mph even at his quickest. But he swung it very late at that pace which is very rare. And what I like is that his stock swing to both lefties and righties was the inswinger. The variation which I suspect was just a natural variation rather than anything the bowler did just held its line. That's a more effective combination than swinging it both ways because the batsman can't pick anything from the seam position. Everything looks like an inswinger so you always have to play at it. The ones that hold their line will induce the nick and the inswingers can bowl you or catch you in front. He also had an offcutter that cut in rather than swung in which was hard to pick(not a slower offspinner, this came out at a brisk fast medium pace) and a very good straight bouncer. On a day when he's in rhythm, there's just no answer. Sobers said that if he faced Younis, he'd bat well out of his crease trying to nullify the swing. It would have been an interesting experiment
