This is a nice tutorial to compare the two methods, but it would be more helpful if you told us the WHY instead of just showing us the HOW. You're tweaking 200 things really fast without giving us an overview of what is happening and the reasoning behind this. It's nice demonstration, but perhaps give us a little more background into your logic

Honestly came here cos he had another video with a similar 'beginner vs pro' framing and I didn't rly walk away understanding the difference. My takeaway from this one: -tweak your colours with broad curves rather than tight keying, to create pleasing falloff and avoid harsh edges as well as make the grade applicable across shots without tweaking the key every time -see if you can achieve your desired result by making changes that affect your entire image before going granular, because a tweak that affects all your colours will look less artificial than a targeted one -honestly I didn't rly get how his initial rec709 conversion was an improvement, he talked up the importance of knowing your camera but then showed us how a pro would tackle unknown camera footage anyway. Maybe it wasn't purely eyeballing and there was some adherence to the scopes I missed, but to me it looked the same except with more parameters tweaked.

I’m a film student and my first official lesson on grading in DaVinci the editing teacher was showing the class the different colour tools and for some reason when people were asking for help with applying a grade to rec 709 he’d just default to telling them to use the qualifier. I only knew little about grading before this but thinking logically about how the qualifier picks a colour selection, it didn’t make sense that he was defaulting to that and when using it myself I pointed out how there was the ugly blotchy bits after using. So after playing around with the different tools I just ended up using the vs curves a lot more and the teacher saw me and was like “yeah you could do it like that I guess”. After watching this video I’m just happy I was on the right lines, I still haven’t done a massive amount of grading yet but this certainly makes me optimistic that I’ll be able to improve

I appreciate the fact that this is free, it's great to be able to learn advanced stuff on KZbin, it's how lots of careers start out these days, probably, which is a huge service to the community. Having said that... This "tutorial" is not one of the best. You tell us what a pro does, but don't explain several of your choices. I realize most of them are according to your taste, but why not tell us why you make them? Why do you open up the pivot (what even is that)? Up to that particular value? The lift? Why take the gamma up? Why take the lift down? To keep contrast going? Then why not crank the contrast control up? You obviously have a thought-out workflow but you only share some of it with us or why it works well for you...

It's impressing how similar to Photoshop is this workflow. @Wally#01 the same thing i said lmao. Why would you apply different logic to video
@ViciousTuna20122 жыл бұрын
@@AnimeZone247 Well it is different. With video you have to take care that each scene is matching the next, so you can't treat each frame as a still photograph. You might not be able to make every frame "perfect", whereas with still photography you can possibly have more freedom.

Everything looks off balance. The whole point of color grading and correcting is to balance things. Personally I am not a fan of the CYAN/Greenish contrast. It just makes it look very amateur and throws it completely off balance. You either going to cool it and neutralize it, or you're going to warm it and the whole contrast happens when you create the right curve balance points between red green and blue. The first thing you notice in this video is the sky. That's the main problem in color correction, balancing everything so your brain doesn't have to fight for life to focus on the subject.

Hi Waqas Qazi, I'm a beginner at this and am finding your tutorials quite useful - your newer ones I am finding more useful and I just wanted to mention a couple of constructive comments: 1. In the first half of your video you showed exactly which controls you are editing by showing it zoomed in, so we can see which control and how much you are modifying it, which is extremely helpful. However, when you added the Glow FX...there was no zooming into the control, and so it is hard to see which controls you're modifying and how much by. I first watched the video on a large TV and couldn't work out where your mouse was when you added the Glow FX, and so didn't have a clue what you were doing and where. I then watched it closer on my PC monitor and was able to figure out what you were changing and how much, but as you did it so quickly, I had to really focus on which control you were changing. I found your earlier videos you did a long time ago hard to follow for the above reasons, but it looks like your more recent ones are easier to follow. 2. As someone else mentioned here, you stated it's important to know which camera was used, but then you didn't state why. As a beginner, I am still struggling to figure out what I need to do with this knowledge - what do I change, where, and why ? Maybe a topic for another video maybe?

higher end cameras can be pushed further than cheap cameras. as a colorist he explained in a different video, that you’re going to color as far as the limitations of your footage before it starts to look bad. there are some techniques like the ones shown in this video that can be considered as simple and easy on the footage, but there are others that are more complex that can only be done to higher end footage.

Even on my first day of work (more than 12 years ago), I didn't do anything close to what you described as beginner job. The value of professional colourists goes beyond making pretty pictures, they know and understand the mode and psychology of colours and know how to help the story through tools and techniques they acquired throw the years. Comparing two pictures and asking which one looks better is wrong; the question is the method and its reason not look. A yellow look is not necessary wrong (The City of Lost Children by jean-pierre jeunet)

next time, Instead of you doing the "beginner grade" because you're definitely not a beginner, you should let a Beginner.. like my self! do it! that would be way more of a fair comparison, because as a pro, you don't know how to grade like a beginner, only begginers know how! 😅

ahhh. Newbie here. I think I see what you did there. Your calibrating by maxing, then subtracting. Love the way you talk/teach! Like/Subscribed. Thank you!

This seems like it was pretty good but I couldn't figure out where the most was or with us item was where he was at because I couldn't see and didn't understand the jargon for the components names

This is an awesome tutorial! My process/nodes tends to be to "attempt" to White balance first, then mess with exposure/contrast levels to a look that i like. then colour grade, then wack some halation just to give it the filmic touch, but I think i struggle a bit in the white balance and colour grade steps especially. I'm going to practice with this node tree because it looks like theres so much more control over colours and light levels without having the colour grade clash with the wb.

Create 5 nodes: Temp/tint, Contrast, Primary, HDL, Glow 1. Contrast- - Raise contrast - Lower pivot 2. Primary- - Lift down - Gamma up - Gain down - Saturation 100% 3. Temp/tint - Slightly adjust (eye it up according to needs) 4. HDL - Go to hue vs sat and lower the spikes - Raise any color you want to add, raising on the sides of the spikes can help - Go to “hue vs luminance and adjust same thing (don’t over-do it) 5. Glow - Add the glow effect to glow node. - Change composite type to “soft light” - Lower threshold and spread all the way - Click qualifier below and change “high” to around 60 Finish- go to settings and global blend and blend slightly
