Some dragons are like Balerion. And then I bet they had dragons so nimble they flew around the volcanoes like hummingbird welders, building the amazing towers and spires of Old Valyria. This is very fun to speculate.

I'm thinking small dragons specially bred for the heat of their fire without becoming too huge. Perhaps different diets/magic rituals could result in a pint-sized dragon that had fire as hot as a large dragon. But since these small dragons had smaller throats/mouths maybe their flame would be focused into more of a "laser beam" to quickly and accurately superheat small pieces of metal. Its a pretty different genre from ASOIAF, but the Temeraire books by Naomi Novak have some excellent examples of dragon breeding for different roles and abilities. It's Napoleanic fantasy/alt-history, and we see a lot of how Britain thinks about dragon husbandry and tactics. They have massive heavyweights that can move troops and equipment, small fast messengers, long winged distance flyers, acid spitters, etc. And all battle dragons have whole crews that ride in rigging on their back, with a captain, riflemen to repel boarders, and harnessmen to take care of the dragon in the field. Cool stuff.

Breeding types of dragons like horses. There are Palfreys, coursers, destriers, cart horses, stumpers, etc. makes total sense. Also, once the dragons are engaged, the riders become passengers, the dragons take over. It's one of the things that made sense to me from the show. Explains to me, what happened at Storm’s End and later in the war on at least 2 other battles (Rook’s Rest and Tumbleton)

They might have had something like "combat flight training" courses where rider and dragon learn to work together. I think the ancient great empires had fire mages and possibly partially trained wild dragons, but I think advanced dragon/human genetic experiments were perfected in Valeria. Like, they took it too far and threw off the cycle of fire with their level of magical misuse.
@ThommyofThenn6 ай бұрын
That's an interesting idea. Maybe the Valyrians even bred people to have "King's blood" or however they understood the magic to work. I'm visualising something similar to the Imperium's nasty tradition of sacrificing thousands of psykers per day to fuel the Golden Throne. Perhaps the Valyrians knew certain kinds of human sacrifice could somehow imbue dragons with "desirable" characteristics through some macabre ritual. But they took it too far and either offended the gods themselves, or the families of the people who got sacrificed/worked to death in the mines finally said enough is enough, but that leads directly into the "faceless dragon" theory, a great video that can be found on this channel if you haven't seen it

For my own writing/rpg making purposes, I theorized about dragon breeds a few years back. For my own purposes I only really worked on a split between "war dragons" and what I just called "royal dragons." One thing that I considered for my own stuff but think would be fascinating in a headcanon context, is Targ war dragons bonding to their rider in a different way. That is, a war dragon being bred to be able to bond with a new rider fairly quickly after losing their rider, and bonding through "Dohaeres" rather than through some kind of blood/fire magic. This would be advantageous in battle, as you could take over a riderless dragon a lot faster in a combat situation if you only need to speak the words rather than do a whole ritual.

This dragon had a mellow, intelligent personality; she could fight, but was reluctant to do so and usually just fought with her tail, claws and saved the fire for the most implacable of foes. The Valyrian character was descended from the people who made the Iron Throne and she had the bond with her dragon. They just ranged around the world and made “everything from daggers to houses.”

Glad you put this video out cause i thought of some more Dragon types since the last live stream. Im basically thinking of any function we use and breed horses for can apply to how valyrians bred dragons as well. 1) Sports: theres got to be some type of sport or game the valyrians played using their dragons. Theyre a highly competitive culture so i think this makes sense. Maybe itd be like a quidditch-esque type of game or something like it🤷🏾♂️. This could potentially use multiple classes of dragons big, small, agile, etc depending on what position the player is. The sport of polo, thats played on horseback, is my inspiration for this. 2) I thought the idea of Dressage Dragons was pretty funny. Id guess smaller, agile, more beautiful dragons could fly through some hoops and rings n stuff like in dressage. Similar to the “best in show” dragons you mentioned earlier. 3) Crane Dragons. You would think the valyrians would use dragons to lift heavy structures like steel beams and put them into place like we use big cranes for. Most depictions of valyria have high rise type buildings in it so im thinking thats one way would they could build the structures so high. Surely theres more, id be interested to hear what others you all can come up with.

9:41 OH that reminds me of some of the dragon breeds in a book series called "His Majesty's Dragon" basically the Napoleonic Wars, in which dragons not only exist but are used as a staple of aerial warfare in Asia and Europe. With some being so large theirs entire crews of people maning them like a ship, including an on board dragon vet. So I could see the Valyrians having potentially massive dragons with wide bodies, big wings and able to endure alot of weight. But yes this one of my favourite things to speculate about Valyria and all the possible dragon breeds they had. Kinda want to sit down one day and draw what those other breeds could look. And speaking of our favourite fire lizards, I being thinking, you could put toogether a family tree for all the Targaryen Dragons if you looked at which physical traits they share. Example Vermax being Syraxes and Caraxes son, due to the similarities with the latter, and if is adult concept is anything to go by, his proportions look alot like Vhagar, so likely Vermithors grandson given Vermi is likely Vhagars son due to their similar proportions. Tho you could go the extra mile and put them in a metrix system like actual biologists do haha

8:56 I don’t even think they’d need to be especially haughty to get the idea to race dragons… the real world cultures that race boats were all dependent on boats for survival at one point. Boat racing would’ve started as competition between fishermen to setting their nets on the choice spots. I can imagine there are organic ways dragon racing might’ve evolved in a similar fashion. Dani and Drogo bonded over a shared background in cultures that are oriented around riding domesticated animals. Even though she was from a culture that had forgotten these traditions, it’s just “what they do to get by” in certain foundational ways and she was captive and or open-minded enough to put these things together… the difference being the Valyrians had the means and ambition to move beyond a mere gypsy caravan of enslavement and sexual assault and got properly serious about doing all those same things but on a larger scale (ie: colonialism) 😂

In regards to road crew dragons, I think you would probably select for individuals with the hottest flames, so that would ultimately result in a breed that has hotter flames at a younger age than most other dragons. In fact their fire breathing capabilities may be more well-developed than most breeds and the cone of flame perhaps a bit more compressed or perhaps the dragons have more control over the size of the cone of flame that they produce so as to reduce accidents and at least have the possibility of being more precise if need be. And I think that you would select for dragons that not only are more docile but more willing to follow orders. A potential side effect of selecting for more docile individuals might also result in a breed that's smaller than other breeds, if testosterone is a thing for dragons.

Aren't the Valyrian Dragonlords numbered around 40 families. And targeryens who had 5 dragons was far from the most powerful dragonlord house. During the fall of Rhoynar: around 300 dragons were mobilized, which maybe a mass mobiliziation (levee en masse) of most of their dragons because of the previous defeat; Avarage number of dragons per family sould have around 10 dragons. Which is a very limited number for specialized breeding. Considering the rivalry among lords in every time and place, one would think everyone would want to breed them for war. Specializations are likely to come about among the dragons who didn't make the cut as battle dragons. And maybe because of laws, politics, limited resources and alliances among houses: some limits on certain types might have been put and specialized breeding got encouraged in others.

I always thought if you had a dragon, you had a war dragon. Hmm.

I know it looks visually cool to have a dragon sitting on a pile of bones after a meal but I would think a dragon would eat their food whole. I can't imagine a dragon going at a cow like a dude gnawing on some chicken wings. Not to mention, reptiles usually eat their food whole and dragons are pretty much based on reptiles. I guess they could be regurgitating the bones but then where would they get their calcium?
