Official audio for WAR and Eric Burdon's top 10 hit "Spill The Wine" originally released on 'Eric Burdon Declares "War"' in 1970.
WAR burst onto the scene 50 years ago, capturing the heart and soul of America’s streets with its righteous, multi-cultural sound on hits like “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” “Low Rider” and “The Cisco Kid.” Avenue/Rhino is kicking off a year-long anniversary celebration that will begin with the introduction of a new colored-vinyl boxed set for Record Store Day, available at participating retailers. “We spoke out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes, and turf wars, as we embraced all people with hope and the spirit of brotherhood. It’s just as apropos today.” - WAR
WAR, the original street band, was founded by veteran record producer Jerry Goldstein and rock legend Eric Burdon in 1969. Together with the original band members Lonnie Jordan, Howard Scott, Lee Oskar, B.B. Dickerson, Harold Brown, the late Thomas “Papa Dee” Allen, and Charles Miller, they blended many musical styles and influences. The musical laboratory that is WAR yielded 17 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards, including the triple platinum ‘The World Is A Ghetto’ and double platinum ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends?’ and ‘Greatest Hits’, and hit songs "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine", and "The Cisco Kid".
WAR began playing live shows to sold-out audiences in the 1970s and continues their commitment to being road WARriors, touring over 150 dates a year to this day.

I realize as we get older, our memory gets a little foggy and that was really a long time ago but FYI, "Spill the Wine" wasn't released until 1970. Hope that bit of information makes you feel just a little younger. lol BTW, The Animals recorded "House of the Rising Sun" in 1964... Long long time ago...

I will always remember when VH1 Classic became a thing, and my dad was watching, and this song came on. He hollered for me and I fell in love with it. By the end, I was singing along with him in our living room! My dad is so awesome! I remember War doing a little concert at a Kansas City Royals game, my dad took me and my brother. Yes - the production is astounding. Hearing this on the radio and never knowing for YEARS who it was until KZbin - (I had guessed it was Van Morrison - which was a good guess - but of course didn’t help me find it - ) hearing it on a car radio I never NOTICED the overdubs of the woman speaking Spanish. This is brilliant and obviously intended for hearing while open-top driving through south LA. - beats out even the great “low rider” on that count.

This song stirred my imagination, because the first time I heard it was in Summer of 1975, while getting ready to go to work. High noon, with a few wispy clouds in the Texas sky the only thing missing was the field of grass, and various women all about. Eric Burdon, dropped out of WAR in 1971 after a bout of exhaustion from touring. WAR moved on, Burdon became a solo artist and the rest is history.
