The Ukrainian counteroffensive has failed, there's no way they'll get to the Sea of Asov before winter. They've managed to retake 60 square kilometres so far and expended 40% of all the armour donated from the West, in the process. It's a war of attrition and the Ukrainians are going to run out of blood before F16s are going to make any difference. The war is lost, we're just waiting for the Ukrainians to realize it.

When this mobilization is used it's a problem... Point blank, this means fully trained and ready military people were already sent to the front lines. And recruiting what amounts to cannon fodder is unlikely to change things. The thing is, it was never a thing where Ukraine just had more people than Russia - it was the fact that Russia had less capable people at the top than Ukraine. And adding a million more foot soldiers will not change that problem at the top.

Especially when they can't properly equip them. Who knows how many Russians froze to death or incapacitated last winter but there are numerous accounts. The soldiers have to often buy their own uniforms and equipment as well and with the ruble crashing that's going to be another serious problem for conscripts and their families. Russia's recent attempt to mobilize over one million new troops is an act of desperation. In fact, Putler's existing troops "appear" to be giving Ukraine a hard time but it's actually the massive delay by the West that allowed Russia to spend five months mining the h*ll out of the defensive line that makes it look like Ukraine is losing. The Russian troops are just sitting there because Ukraine has been slowed down, thanks to the mines. When confronted, the Russian troops don't do well, hence the need for more numbers.

Ukraine is far from losing. They’re taking back more territory every day and they’re only advancing slowly because of the West’s excessive dithering. At least the F16s are coming-that’s something. But we should have begun the process of training Ukrainian pilots and staff over a year ago. They would have the jets operating in their skies by now if the West hadn’t dithered. And I wish all allies of Ukraine that have the capability would follow my government’s example with the storm shadow missiles and provide their equivalents. Going back to what they do best. They tried nato style overwhelming combined arms tactics but had too much of a top down high level command structure and not enough lower level independent tactical control to make it work. Now they go back to classic Russian tactics of just bleeding yourself and the enemy until the enemy runs out of blood as they either can not or are unwilling to suffer to the levels Russians are. There's always a significant lag between Ukraine requesting & the West supplying - whether getting it ready takes time, that Ukraine wants complete liberation of all their territories while many in the West only hope to stop Russia at some point including within Ukraine, Russia's 'red lines' and threats don't stop but do delay, or simply Western support would diminish without the regular Russian atrocities - whatever the reason, the lag causes issues yet some focus on hopes from Ukraine disproportionate to pressure to give as they need.

@@opensizhe the supplying of aircraft was never going to be made until a sufficient Cadre of pilots was available. Further, they would never offer a materiale support for which their is no capacity. As you referenced, perceived "red lines" we're not going to crossed unless both need for them and capacity to use them were firmly established. This is the reason Ukrainian air activity has remained very low. They have as many pilots training as possible. But again, it doesn't take weeks but months on simulators and then months on live aircraft. Over a year ago, during a NATO briefing, it was clearly stated that ground and air crews were in training. Remember something else. Those F16s have to be maintained. That maintenance MUST OCCUR IN UKRAINE. If jets are moving into and out of NATO countries for servicing...THIS BECOMES A WAR WITH NATO. Training mechanic crews is far more difficult than retraining pilots. Entire manuals have to translated...that alone takes time. Tech manuals must employ nuanced usage. It's no small job. Final point, there was always the potential that Russia could finally lash out. NATO does not want significant resources caught up in that potential event. NONE of that was part of his conversation. He clearly had no idea what was in the public record...events well known by every party involved in the effort. At the very least, he should have reminded the host and audience of that reality.

Indeed, Putin took a calculated risk, anticipating a response similar to our reaction in 2014. However, to his surprise, things unfolded differently this time. He spent weeks amassing his military forces along the Ukrainian border, yet our side remained inactive. I found myself frustrated because deploying a combined force of 80,000 troops from the US, Europe, and Ukraine to defend the border could have coerced him to retract his forces. This action could have potentially saved thousands of lives for both Russia and Ukraine and averted any nuclear threat. The absence of decisive action raises suspicions; it seems Biden was aware of Putin's impending invasion. All of this is truly disheartening. The conflict should have been simplified from the outset: Putin taking Kyiv and Ukraine targeting Moscow - a more direct engagement. The current state of affairs is far from appropriate.

The great thing about all this is that when Ukraine wins the war and expels Putin Ukraine has all the military forces to protect NATO and themselves against any future Russian escalations if Russia even exists as it is today. Ukraine is becoming one of the most powreful militaries in de world. Who is going to use Putin's Roadway thru the Centers of Traffic all around Moscow to his home 12 miles away? The western media regularly says Ukraine is not prepared to use F-16s in current combat. That said, the 'special military operation' is the first major war using contract fighters and mercenaries since the Korean War when Soviet pilots flew DPRK marked MIG-15s as Kim Il Sung pilots. No doubt, there are many 'retired' US and EU pilots and maintenance workers with F-16 experience, who will fly for Ukraine if the pay and assignments were right. Encrypted communications blocks Russian surveillance, pseudo-Ukrainian 'chatter' causing Russian confusion, Ukrainian drones generating false F-16 radar signatures and lock-on signals, and a total absence of NATO identification on the Ukrainian marked equipment could conceal 'those, behind the controls'. This option provides an early first strike capability for Ukraine - destroying Russian air assets (mostly helicopters), attacking tactical positions deep behind the front lines, and triggering a few sonic booms and strafing missions over the front lines. In 1991, the power of 'shock and awe' during the Iraq War was confirmed. Limited and early air incursions, by contractors, into Russian occupied lands would cause chaos in the Russian ranks while Ukrainian pilots and crews expand their learning of F-16 processes on the Polish side of the border and then, quietly transition into combat roles. Russia can throw out more equipment and manpower than Ukraine.If Russia true goal was to invade Ukraine they would have used the full force of their military which would include aircraft and full mobilization of their military power .They are going to just inject more troops and equipment when needed to prolong this as they know the next American president will stop the funding to Ukraine and the blame will be the united states made Ukraine lose by lack of funding and provideing munitions . An agreement will be made within a year or 2 and Russia will keep there 3 or 4 enclaves in Ukraine .

Russia has put in place what looks like a highly effective mobilization system. It has a database of millions of men and automatic revoke of passports, drivers licenses and other limitations. Legal hurdles have been cleared. So they are ready to execute a massive mobilization at a flick of a switch. However they lack training facilities, instructors, equipment, supplies and logistics to support the mobilization, and turn the mobilized men in to any kind of effective fighting force. So this mobilization will have a huge impact on Russian economy and very little impact on the battlefield. And then there is the ever present corruption and incompetence that will propably make even my worst assumptions blush.

I think there is still an underestimating of the Ukrainian capability on the battlefield! They are as good in defence as the russians, using Baktmut as an example! Also, their adaptability to new equipment i.e. Challenger tanks, which has been well documented by their trainers. As for F16's, the American trainers have been astonished how they can adapt so easily! If this conversation is for playing down the aptitude of the Ukrainian armed forces in the face of the enemy I think you are quite wrong to be honest!!

Russians wanted it so badly at any cost, 20k died according to prigozhin and he was not happy about it, hence his little run from Rostov-on-Don to moscow! Say what you want the russians suffered badly and the moral victory was Ukraine !

From what I understand, the 3 key aspects are: - range of radar / reach of weapon (right now Russian jets have the advantage because they spot and can shoot Ukraine's jets before they spot the Russians). F16 is a good idea in the long term but require to much looking after, the Gripen C would be a much better option requiring a lot less in terms of ground crew support. If the Gripen was mated with the meteor missile this would have an impact, also much better in not being wedded to an airfield. They could be given these as Sweden transitioned to the Gripen E.

Yeah sure maintanance, but they are much better then sovjet era fighterjets. And can shoot like 200+ different NAVO amminution. Where NATO has stockpiles... The Gripen is beter but lacks the amounts and ammunition available. For example for the F16 we have thousands and thousands of air to sea missiles. Something that could become a major headache for the few Russian ships in the black sea and sea of azov. Especially if Ukraine returns the damage on soft targets like Russia has done. An oil tanker has no defence against F16 equipped with torpedoes... Even if Russia can send defending ships that's a ship that is no longer sending rockets into odessa harbors.And cost of insurance and guarding cost money that Russia can ill afford to spent.

This war, botched by the US and the EU, is undoubtedly one of the most unreasonable conflicts in history. Rather than a genuine war, it appears to be an opportunity for these nations to engage in war games and test their limits with minimal resources. Shockingly, the US and the EU seem to indirectly support Putin, as they insist that Ukraine must not have long-range weapons or air superiority and must not take any action against Russia; this is “the deal” for assistance. Meanwhile, life in Russia remains unaffected by a war prolonged by a lack of appropriate action. This situation is profoundly cruel, thoughtless, and self-destructive in every aspect. Initially, they should have provided the necessary assistance to strike Moscow directly instead of merely supporting Ukraine to defend itself. Mobilization doesn't just affect the number of people conscripted, it also leads to as many as a million or more citizens leaving in efforts to avoid being drafted, many of which will never re-enter Russia or it's economy. You lose over a million taxpayers who are also relied upon to pay the pensions for Russia's rapidly aging population. They are in a corner now.

As a combat veteran it is common as a soldier to have to fight on 2 fronts. One against the enemy. Also another front against higher command getting you killed with out of touch decisions. If everyone in your military and other paramilitary forces is telling you that you need new leadership in top positions of the military, as a leader, you really need to listen.

There are so many similarities between the War in Ukraine and the Spanish Civil War where the democracies never quite gave the legitimate left wing government forces enough military aid to swing the war decisively in their favour. We can see the same happening here. Firstly the West expected Ukraine to collapse when Putin invaded and were caught on the hop with no plans to help when Ukraine replied with stiff opposition to the invasion. The west expected the usual round of diplomatic condemnations and token sanctions and then return to "business as usual". Ukraine shredded that plan and the west are having to make more of a real effort to halt Russia. The west remain terrified of Putin. This war looks likely to drag on for years and will result in a stalemate similar to the Korean Peninsula and Cyprus where there is no formal end to hostilities and the hostilities had calcified.

I am guessing you've only paid attention about Ukraine since the war started. Ukraine was recieving NATO training long before the invasion. It was getting equipment. Sure it wasn't a lot but they had Javelins, NLAWs, armoured vehicles. When it was clear Russia was going to invade Ukraine got a quick uptick in this support. Which turned out to be vital.

2:02 this statement is incorrect or misleading. Ukraine doesn't have a problem "massing enough troops to breakthrough the Russian defensive lines." Ukraine does have a problem clearing minefields efficiently enough, with Russian artillery pre aimed at the minefields, to be able to move troops, tanks, and infantry fighting vehicles into direct contact with Russian defenders in their defensive positions, trenches, bunkers, etc. No NATO or Western military has a better method for dealing with the millions of mines Russia has placed, without air superiority, than what Ukraine is doing.

The F16 is kind of a red herring. The current air frames Ukraine has are unable to make much difference because of SAM fire everywhere, the F16 wont change this. The biggest change has been achieving parity in artillery. If we want them to break through quickly give them glide MOAB's, that will clear mines and troops all in one pass.

F-16 can destroy Russian aircraft from over the HORIZON, a feat that Russia is incapable of doing, therefore the Ukraine will NOT have to worry about Russian SAMs from those distances!

F16 was a Wild Weasel in the Iraq War, and it has continued to be upgraded for that. Suppressing Russian air defenses will be a part of the F-16s role as soon as it gets to Ukraine. Once a regional window has been opened in the air defense, UAF MIGs, SUs. larger drones and other F-16s can do CAS. These attacks will be better at night to evade MANPADs.

You're 100% right. Nobody is going to get air superiority over the Ukraine battlefield, because of the SAM threats all the way around. F-16's can easily be shot down if they stray into Russian AD umbrella. F-16's will be useful when Ukraine gets those capabilities, but they will be used over Ukrainian airspace to provide air cover for Ukrainian troops, especially against Russian attack helicopters and low-level airstrikes. They will also be used as platforms for long-range interdiction strikes, using SCALP / Storm Shadow / JASSM, or medium range glide weapons (think SDBs), which are fairly cheap / plentiful. Those strikes will be conducted from within the protective umbrella of Ukrainian AD, not forward of the battle line where the aircraft will be at serious risk. F-16s are not typically Wild Weasels, only a few squadrons in the USAF have that capability (the F-16 CJ). Ukrainians are not currently trained in SEAD tactics, that's a whole other level of specialization that few air forces even bother with. Close Air Support (CAS) is another specialty that few Air Forces do well, and in Western doctrine CAS requires other aviation assets like tanker aircraft, which the ukrainians don't have. F-16s also do not have a very long-range or powerful radar, as it's not a dedicated air superiority aircraft. F-16s would typically rely on AWACS for long-range detection of other aircraft. Block-C AMRAAMs are decent missiles, with a range of about 50-60 miles, but they do not outrange S-300 / S-400. I doubt seriously that our government will hand over AMRAAM-D, since we don't even have those in our inventories yet. Bottom line: We all need to temper our expectations about what F-16s can do.
