Russia has been attempting to encircle the eastern Ukraine town of Avdiivka and has been repeatedly attacking it for over a month.
The town retains its reputation as a stronghold just beyond occupied Donetsk, but some fear it will soon follow the same fate as Bakhmut, which has been almost completely destroyed.
Jack Losh has spoken to some locals to see how they’re doing and to find out what winter could bring for the Ukrainian Eastern flank.

It's not the world that has shifted the focus to the middle-east, it's the news. The people of Europe are still very much focused on the biggest and most crucial war on our continent since WW2. But clicks and views brings in the money, there was a time when the press served a nobler cause than just being entertainment for the masses.

Avdiivka is actually not only beneficial for war propaganda, but also serves as the final big, bulky and formidable stronghold in the East for Ukraine side. No place in the West of the town is as fortified, mined and densely packed with industrial areas and residential homes that the army could take cover in and hold. Not to mention it will make any attempt at bombarding or harrassing Donetsk city incredibly difficult due to lack of base of operation and a much larger distance from before, which would most likely make Donetsk the center of Russian military command and supply in the East. With a secured command center and supply hut so close to the combat lines, Russian advance in this section would be easier than ever, and with the fact both Avdiivka and Bakhmut are in Russian hand, they would no longer worry about potential counteroffensive that may threaten their flanks and can now focus safely on advancing in the Eastern direction without looking back. It will be a disaster for the East bank of the Dniepro River, and of any future attempt to reach Crimea from Ukrainian side since they will then be attacked from two sides with no fortification to slow down the enemy advance. If Avdiivka falls then may God have mercy on those poor frontline soldiers bc I wouldnt hope the Russians will.

When Bakhmut fell, many military experts here in the west were saying that Bakhmut was not the strategic hub that the Russians were claiming and that Avdiivka was much more important strategically. So now, I'm assuming that Avdiivka is not going to be that important anymore, and some other city will become the de-facto strategic hub??

Don't take my word on it, just ask Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, and others. Giving Ukrainians weapons, most importantly now, long-range missiles and contemporary planes in a drip-drip-drip manner, and expecting them to quickly beat russia, is a sign of cowardice or insanity, if not both. Not THAT long, Ukraine only has about 10-20 months worth of manpower left at the current rate of casualties (180,000 in August 2023 according to the US) and they can't keep their eternally-drafted army of all males 25-to-60 forever with only 10 days leave, and spending weeks in the trenches unable to rotate. The French in WW1 had 30 days leave, only 4 days a week in the trenches, and 3 year service limits (light at the end of the tunnel) and the news that America was joining the war to keep spirits high and STILL they had half their army mutiny. The Germans with 3 year service limits also experienced severe mutinies. Ukraine has fought admirably with a 1.5 to 1 kill ratio, but they needed a 4-to-1 kill ratio (the Germans had a 4.5 to 1 kill ratio against the Russians in WW2 and still lost). It's only a matter of time until either the manpower losses or massive mutinies bring the war to an end. That's why Zelensky just declared he's banning democracy and cancelling all elections (keep in mind Iraq and South Vietnam held elections at the height of insurgenices that attacked polling places so there's no excuse) and yesterday Zelensky started yelling that anyone thinking of launching a "2nd Maidan" was a Russian agent, basically trying to pre-emptively declare any protestors against him as spies because he's clearly anticipating massive protests coming soon. It's not looking good.
@TexanIndependence
@TexanIndependence 5 ай бұрын
To clarify, Ukraine is losing such forces at a the current rate that they will lose all their reserves and start being unable to reinforce positions in about 10-20 months (I didn't mean to say they'd lose ALL their forces, just enough that they lose their ability to rotate troops or reinforce positions as needed if the Russians launch a large offensive). Possibly sooner. We are seeing Russia begin their typical winter-spring offensives. Every summer-fall is Ukraine's turn as they have favorable conditions in those seasons, while the winter favors the Russians heavily (much easier to spot enemy forces, they can cut off Ukrainian energy grid, though last year's mild winter saved things for the EU and Ukraine). Many Ukrainian leaders are fearful that Russia has been stockpiling missiles (they've been launching very few the past 6 months) to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses in the winter. It's very likely that's the case (as Russia probably learned that's a better approach than what they did last year). If Russia can overwhelm Ukraine's energy grid, the cold Ukranian mothers and wives and daughters are very likely to get off their rears and start a massive protest in Kyiv that topples Zelensky. Hence Zelensky's warnings yesterday that a 2nd Maidan may be coming but to try to claim that any Ukrainians who protest are Russian agents might not work to silence all dissent while cancelling elections so there's no outlet for people to voice their concerns.

There are many ways to interpret the battlefield situation. If Russia really had lost so many manpower, a social revolt in Russia would be inevitable. But Russia stays rock solid. Something is not stacking up. Avdiivka can be "a stronghold defended by Ukraine", but by the flip of the coin, we can also call it a cauldron set up by the Russian force. Whichever you would believe.
@Gg3816
@Gg3816 3 ай бұрын
The reason why it doesn't stack up for you is in causal relationship. You assume that human lives are valuable for russians therefore lots of casualties supposed to start some revolt. It could be true for different countries but not for russia. They have archaic mentality; I can guarantee you that if tomorrow someone there would announce that they won the war, but lost let's say 5 million soldiers dead and twice as much wounded. Majority of russians would ignore deaths of their countrymen and fully focus on celebrating the victory. Most of russians cares only about themselves personally to an extreme extent and about no one else and loves those who bring a sense of importance. They still have that itch after they lost Cold War multiplied by rotted soul as a result of 70 years of communism in ussr. Putin knew it perfectly that's why he could start the war without fear of any serious protests within the country.

Still doesn't mean the war is by any means close to being over or is victory in any way secured - but it would certainly signal to me that momentum is firmly in Russia's hands at the moment.

"The world focused on the middle east." I'd like to see that mantra analysed just a little bit. Maybe take a look at how that focus is generated, who the clickers are and so on. I don't know many in my European demographic who think that Ukraine is the lesser issue. Stagnant frontlines does not mean the absence of important events, and it certainly doesn't make russian ambition any less of a pickle.

Avdiivka is Bakhmut 2.0. Even NYT noticed in desperation: "Some American officials say the fight in Bakhmut has become something of an obsession for Mr. Zelensky and his military leaders." Bakhmut was a slaughter which was entirely Zelenskyy folly as Stalingrad was entirely Hitler's folly. Zelenskyy just for media hype wasted on average 500 troops daily (total tally was at least 51 000 KIA) in Bakhmut meat grinder even when all escape routes came under Russian fire control and this debacle turned into a sheer slaughter of Ukrainian troops. But obsessed with Bakhmut Zelenskyy didn't stop even at that. Since May 20 when Russians took Bakhmut General Syrsky (Zelenskyy minion) launched wave after wave of suicidal counterattacks failing to retake a single village near Bakhmut (parts of villages Andriivka and Kleshiivka are still controlled by Russians and it's driving Zelenskyy nuts) while wasting thousands upon thousands of hapless Ukrainian conscripts. This ongoing obsessive lunacy that makes zero military sense is simply astounding. Avdiivka is another Zelenskyy obsession . Russians established fire control over all escape routes from Avdiivka. At this point it turned into a slaughter of Ukrainian troops which are sent to Avdiivka in huge numbers (yeah, Zelenskyy and his minions are that dumb even after Bakhmut debacle). Zelenskyy is the gift that keeps on giving for Russians.

"What it’s like defending Avdiivka against Russian attacks " well, its like being a cannonfodder like it was in Bahmut before since there is absolutely no sense from a strategic point of view to hold Avdeevka. It’s just easier for Zelensky to lose another 30,000 Urainians as cannon fodder than to admit the loss of Avdeevka. For this reason he does not like Zaluzhny. Speaking about West, no one really cares about KIA ukranians 'cause that are just tools, spareware, to hirt Russia.

@@kazkaskazkas8689 First of all Ukraine has erected multiple Statues to Stepan Bandera, Roman Shukhevich, Dmytro Klyachkivsky and Yaroslav Stetsko. Bandera's ideology was of an ethnically pure Ukrainian state where all non Ukrainians would have been purged, this included Poles, jews and Russians. He was very antisemitic. He was Leader of the OUN that collaborated with the nzis in the Ukrainian holocaust, members of OUN also participated in Babi Yar, where thousands where killed, this is also confirmed by survivors like David Ayzemberg. He was imprisoned after his alliance with the Nzis because he declared independence without asking German permission, but lived in comfortable conditions, even being able to communicate with the outside world. During his imprisonment he wrote to Alfred Rosenberg, the Reich Minister for the Occupied Eastern Territories - in his letter, he offered cooperation and stated that Ukrainian nationalists were predisposed to help the Nazis because they had been "formed in a spirit similar to National Socialist ideas". He was freed in 1944 and collaborated with the Nzis until the end of the war when he fled to West Germany. His nzi ideology had these caratheristics already before the start of the war. Roman Shukhevich was a member of the Nachtingall battalion of Nzi germany, later commanded the UPA, responsible of the Galicia-Volhynia massacre of 150k Poles and Jews. In 2016 the Parliament of Poland recongnized the massacre as genocide. He was also posthumousely awarded the highest military decorations. Dmytro Klyachkivsky was a member of the OUN close to Bandera, commander of the UPA and is regarded as one of the initatiors of the Galicia-Volhynia massacre, was his directive, issued in mid-1943, that ordered the extermination of the Polish population across the province. It reads "We should undertake the great action of the liquidation of the Polish element. As the German armies withdraw, we should take advantage of this convenient moment for liquidating the entire male population in the age from 16 up to 60 years. Villages and settlements situated next to the large forests should disappear from the face of the earth." However records show that the majority of victims were women and children. Yaroslav Stetsko, first head of the Ukrainian state. In the Proclamation of the Ukrainian state it says : "The newly formed Ukrainian state will work closely with National-Socialist Germany under the leadership of its leader Adolf Hitler which is forming a new order in Europe and the world" He also said" I insist on the extermination of the Jews and the need to adapt German methods Of exterminating Jews in Ukraine" He was one of the instigators of the Lviv pogroms. Slogans used in those pogroms include "Long live Adolf Hitler and Stepan Bandera - death to the Jews and the Communists." And "Take up your weapons, destroy the enemy: Moscow, the Hungarians, the Jews. Destroy them". The OUN's brutal methods were apparent as the "Decalogue of a Ukrainian nationalist" puts it "You will not hesitate to commit even the greatest crime, if the good of the cause demands it." Bandera and Shukhevich were awarded the title "Hero of Ukraine" by Yuschenko, the title was removed by Yanukovich. It's important to note that the "Nzification" of Ukraine started way before 2014, during Yuschenko's presidency. Many streets, parks, squares, stadiums have been renamed after these people, including a major Boulevard in Kiev, renamed to Bandera street, this road leads to Babi Yar, where thousands of jews died at the hands of Ukrainian Nzis. I genuenly want to know what Bandera did that was good?The answer is nothing. He only brought massacres and death to Ukraine and even betrayed his own nation. There are plenty of Ukrainian people that truly fought for the good of Ukraine and Bandera isn't one of them. Bandera wanted to ethnically cleanse Ukraine. Another example is the renaming of the Ternopil Stadium under Zelensky's presidency to "Bandera and Shukhevich Stadium", there were protests in Poland and Israel, but the Jewish president didn't say a word. Moreover, there is a famous interwiew with Zelensky openly saying that admiring Bandera is actually "cool". On the 25th of September 2023 Zelensky along with Trudeau gave a round of applause to Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian Nzi member of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS in the Canadian parliament. Kiev city had a vote in April 2023 where the majority voted to rename a street to "Volodymyr Kubyovich", this was later annulled after the Israeli Ambassador protested. General Zaluzhni was also seen posting pictures of himself alongside a portrait of Bandera and a bronze bust of Bandera. The flag of the UPA is red and black, it symbolizes blood and soil. "Blut und boden" is literally Nzi Rhetoric. Nzi battallions like Azov have nzi symbolism on their OFFICIAL insigna, this is different from individual soldiers using patches, they use the black sun and wolfsangel officially. Azov is part of the Ukrainian armed forces, and their projects are state finaced. There are many other Battalions apart from Azov that are famous for their extremism, one of them was the Tornado battallion, which committed so many warcrimes that it was impossibile to hide and was disbanded, although a lot of people have been freed. Azov also operates as an international organization, even organizing terrorist attacks cooridinated with foreign far right groups, one of these attacks was planned in my country and they were fortunately arrested. By the way, if you look at the Military land website, more than half of the Ukrainian formations use the OUN, UPA, or other Nzi symbolism. Other groups like the Pravy sector (Neo Nzi group) Operate as paramilitary governament proxies since their heavy involvment in the Maidan, an example of this is when they broke the easter ceasefire in 2014 and attacked a separatist checkpoint killing 3 civilians in the process. Their importance in the Maidan was aknowledged even by western media outlets like the BBC, and during an interwiew Yevhen Karas, Right Sector leader at the time confirmed that even if they were a minority during the protest, them being armed meant they were the main Force, he later stated that without them "The whole thing would have turned into a gay parade" .They are like the browshirts of the Ukrainian governament. They also recently participated in the crackdown on the Orthodox church. Other units known for their extremism and brutality are: Sich Battallion Carpathian sich C14 Kraken Battallion (Azov veterans) Misanthropic divison Aidar Battallion Dnipro-1 National corps (political party) A lot of the Ukrainian governament is made up of historical revisionists, like the ambassador to Germany that was called off because he denied the massacres of the Holocaust in Ukraine. They also make their kids sing "Our father is Bandera" at school. Or people like the Minister of education that said "Ukrainians are genetically inclined towards intellectual activity" On the 18/12/2014 a vote was held by the UN about " Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism" Most countries voted yes, only 6 countries voted No, among those were the United States and Ukraine. After maidan, Poroshenko made January 1st a National holiday (Bandera's birthday) and the 14th of October (Creation of the UPA). Every jan 1st in Kiev there are massive parades that honour Bandera. This is also not mentioning the multiple titles Zelensky awarded to Right sectror members and it's leader, Kotsiubailo, or to other groups.

The USA at that time was the Guarantor without referring to internal problems with the border (for years in the future) or anything else... After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine received the world's third-largest stockpile of nuclear weapons after the United States and Russia. Kyiv inherited 176 intercontinental ballistic missiles that carried 1,272 nuclear warheads. In total, there were 2,500 units of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Ukraine. If Ukraine were a nuclear state, everyone would talk to us differently, negotiate differently. Even if we go for this, we would have to go along a completely different path to independence!
