“I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”

Compared to the "100 million deaths by communism" according to The Black Book of Communism, capitalist mismanagement of food needlessly kills almost 100 million people every 11 years. Major General Smedley Darlington Butler (July 30, 1881 - June 21, 1940), nicknamed the Maverick Marine, was a senior United States Marine Corps officer. @Nucular Robit Wearing a mask isn't good hygiene. Quite the opposite. Anything short of an N95 doesn't stop viral particles, and no, it's not to help those around you. If it won't stop them coming in, it's not going to stop them coming out. Just because you can't feel your breath doesn't mean that particals aren't being arisolized. All you're doing is growing a bacteria biome on your chin. It's gross, it'll make you sick. Also, the "reputable" sources are finally coming out and admitting they were wrong, sounds like you need to get your NPC update.

War begins when peace ends. It seems like the love of money is truly the root of many evils. I used to say war begins when conversation ends, but Smedley makes it sound like plenty of people were communicating throughout the fun marketplace of world wars.

Sir was really an enlightened individual. And a true undeniable hero (though I am sure he would absolutely HATE that word being used to describe himself). As a Marine Corps veteran myself, I can definitely say he is one of my heroes, as many of our present-day Marines would relate. Despite all of the connections and friends he made in Washington and in business, he stuck to his highest principles and denigrated this close interconnection between big business and the war economy. A couple decades later, another war hero who became President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, spoke out about the exact thing, but he attached a name to it; The Military Industrial Complex. Then, another one of my heroes, Kennedy, constantly fought those ever-growing powers to his death (and perhaps the very reason his death occurred). Have we heard of any real leaders even reference this corrupt establishment of these merchants of death since then?

People join the military because they think they are serving their nation. They are told it is their responsibility as citizens to defend their country. They jeopardize their health and lives for their homeland etc. They often don't understand exactly what they are protecting...later, they learn it was the interests of the rich and powerful. Then, when they leave the field of battle and come home broken and bruised, they are abandoned, maltreated and even scorned. The poor fools who allowed themselves to be sent to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan… now homeless and plagued with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and left to fend for themselves !

@Oscar Grouch Have you read "America's Nazi Secret" by John Loftus? He had the highest security clearance to study all the secret underground government vaults. Wall St. made huge profits from Nazi slave labor so the corporate state Office of Policy Coordination hired thousands of Nazis to cover up the Wall St. profits from slave labor. Hitler was just a pawn. Same with the Soviet Union - as Smedley Butler says, "Our old friends, the Russians." A good book on this is "Wall St. and the Russian Revolution" by professor Richard Spence.

@Oscar Grouch I think he would disagree. Dude was famously anti facist and anti corporate. Hitler cared little for corporations and even actively privatized industries and well... he was kind of a facist. But conspiracy theory Rothschild stuff I guess

I didn't expect this book to be from before WW2. It's only gotten worse; not just the industries that produce the equipment and clothing making big gains, but these days it's the very politicians who push for war who are invested in the companies set to make huge profits. We need an updated version that covers the last 85 years.

I learned this lesson the hard way, after deploying under both Dubya and Obama. We all saw Obama do the same to Gadhafi and Libya that Dubya did to Hussein and Iraq. We made brutal examples of those men, pummeled Iraq, rekindled the slave trades in Libya, and turned a blind eye to it back home. Why did we stop asking about the WMD's? Because we're in denial with all of our "free" stuff, like Obamaphones and Obamacare. Somewhere in the Persian Gulf I began to question why I was there and started digging for answers. I did not like what I found. I dove into history, and learned that the GOP and Dems are all just puppets of the Fed, using servicemembers as henchmen to prop up its hyperinflated fiat currency on the global markets by strongarming imperialistic third world puppet regimes to trade their people's resources exclusively in our otherwise worthless dollars, backed by nothing but the war machine of our military industrial complex. I knew this was not the government we were founded to be. We were founded by men who were paranoid of big governments, having just fought a revolution against one, and intentionally built a small, limited government. Now we have the second largest government in the world, between communists China and Russia. So I became curious of how we ended up with this massive, corrupt, seemingly incompetent, certainly oppressive, morally and financially bankrupt bureaucracy. I came across an article in the Washington Post that explains how that happened: >>>For much of American history government was skeletal and primitive. But by the late 1800s, as policymakers struggled to deal with the searing problems of modernity, progressive reformers sought to create a more effective government and an expert, professionalized bureaucracy capable of converting problem-solving policies into action. This bureaucracy was significantly expanded by New Deal, Great Society, and major regulatory programs of the 1970s, yielding a massive administrative state that by 1980 had grown to maturity. In 1920, just under 700,000 people worked in the federal bureaucracy. By 1980, that number was nearly 2.9 million. Over the same period, federal spending rose from $26 billion to $590 billion in 1980-adjusted dollars. These increases were not just the result of rising military expenditures. Spending on the Department of Interior increased 24-fold, Agriculture 86-fold, and Labor 759-fold. Given these resources, the administrative state transformed previously private domains of action and exchange into vast subjects of government oversight and intervention.” William Howell, Terry Moe, Washington Post: “Big government vastly expanded presidential power. Republicans use it to sabotage the administrative state,” 1 Nov 2021.
