Here's my interpretation of the choreography: The soldiers all in alignment choreographically until he talks about "decimating the other side", then they go into a chaotic, disorganized, childish behavior. I think what Fosse was trying to portray was that war unleashes our more primal instincts(animal-like behavior) and it is less organized than we like to believe when it comes down to the root of it all. Thumbs up if you agree!

Part of what is missing is that most of the choruses got edited out. Basically Pippin keeps interrupting the discussion by enthusiastically launching into the "And then the men go marching out into the fray..." chorus and everyone staring at him like he's and idiot and then at the end when he finally gives up, everyone but him launches into the exact chorus he's been yelled at for trying to start over and over.

Can you imagine trying to memorize that dance!? Holy crap!

when i was in the show, it was most definitely one of the hardest dances i had to learn, but after a couple weeks, it was just muscle memory

I played Charlemagne in Griswold High School's production of Pippin during my sophomore year. Though Pippin isn't my favorite musical I've performed in, Charlemagne is definitely one of the most fun roles I ever got to play. Once I get my massage business off the ground, I really hope to do more community theater soon. :)

This version is truly amazing. Only time I've seen better is when it was broken down and entirely focused on vocals, then the singing was more fluent, but even so, It had none of the dancing so, it's no comparison.

It’s only the vamp and it’s not exactly the same. Fosse directed the film version of Cabaret with Liza but I don’t see any comparison between the two. An extraordinary choreographer. For an hour’s masterclass on Fosse, grab yourself a copy of the Liza with a “Z” tv concert. He pulls out all the stops!

Can someone explain the meaning of the dance and little outbursts? The choreography is crazy!
@chrisocallaghan30958 жыл бұрын
It's meant to contrast the unexplainable lust of war, and how it all seems like madness to Pippin which is why to him everyone acts like they lost their minds. When he snaps and does the "when the men go marching out into the fray" it's him just trying to be crazy like everyone else but he's just not fitting in because war is not for him.
@lololauren20018 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thank you so much! That makes so much sense. I love the choreography and actually knowing the meaning behind it makes greater!

Great musical. It's weird how William Katt didn't wear shoes through the entire show. Someone once said it was because Pippin was a hippie. Is that true? If not, why?
@beardedartisan6 жыл бұрын
No, it's not because he's a hippie. The lead actor in the original production was struggling to find shoes that felt good on him, so one night he performed the show barefoot. Fosse loved it because it made Pippin seem younger and more innocent. Since then it's been a tradition for Pippin to be played barefoot.

I somehow prefer revival over this cause it's funny this I didn't even laugh
@baileypeterson54939 жыл бұрын
It's not even close, the old one is vastly superior. Every single lead is much better (especially william katt and ben vereen vs. kyle massey and patina miller). Also, the revival tries much to hard to stuff tricks in every single spot they can, and it completely disregards the atmosphere pippin should have. Pippin should feel very creepy, and the revival doesn't.
