That judge was obviously proven correct by what later happened. The hole is nothing but the same cell that you would be in, but you're not allowed out of it 23 hours a day. You can see the other prisoners, judging on the angle of your cell, see the same tv they watch in the dayroom, and it's no different than being in jail, except that they do not unlock your door. You get let out of your cell opposite the time they let everyone else out - it's simply so you do not interact with each other without a locked door between you. The same thing is protective custody - which is what it really is. That's why they put "celebs" in it.
