Limited sick days, as you most likely imply them to be, are only a thing in the US. Overwhelming majority of developed countries have at least 3 weeks of paid leave per year mandated by law. As for sick days - if you're sick, you go to the doctor (which is free, or, well, "free", because taxes - but still it doesn't even come close to what a US citizen pays for insurance) to get a paper that says you were sick, and then stay at home for a while (until you're better). Oh, and the sick days are paid. Therefore not having sick days is actually *a good thing*, because you don't get sick. Wow, amazing.

In the book, it is explained by the narrator (who is speaking with the benefit of hindsight after Mankind has learned about the invaders) that the aliens have, during the course of their evolution, eradicated all pathogens as part of their conquest of nature itself. Thus, they have no need for antibiotics, they never die from infections or from diseases… and they no longer have any cultural memory of pathogens or disease.

In the book, it described how the aliens marveled at the wheel, a uniquely human invention, indicating that they actually lack the wheel in their technology. The movie pays homage to this in the basement scene, where an alien plays with the wheel of a bike. This would seem to suggest that the aliens aren’t necessarily more advanced than us, just radically different. They most likely focused *all* of their research and development in weapons of destruction and technology with the means to conquer. So they either lost the knowledge about germs and microbes, or never discovered it to begin with.

Tbh after reading just the first chapter of the original WotW book, i realised why i've never heard anyone say the "how did the aliens not know germ theory" thing in its context. In the movie, it's repeatedly implied that the aliens have been planning the invasion for millions of years, which give the criticism weight because there's plenty of time for them to have figured it out. In the book, however, wells mentions that the martians werent really bothered with earth that much until mars started freezing over and their planet started becoming more and more uninhabitable. As a result, in the book, the invasion wasnt some million-year-long plan, it was a hasty act of desparation, which helps explain how they didnt consider the fact that they had no immunity to the germs of earth

From what I recall of the book, the idea is that they had so long ago rid themselves of disease causing microbial species that they had become some obscure factoid of their ancient past, and simply didn't think of it when planning their invasion. And that if they tried to invade again, they'd be able to handle it just fine after the reminder that germs exist.

@@msiankid We can also infer a couple of other things from the book, like the aliens in their natural state were not a violent people and had in fact, not fought a war in many thousands of years. The tripods were not purpose-built war machines, but were improvised, like sticking a 50'cal on the back of a pickup, which still gave them a massive advantage, when their opponents are bringing the equivalent of stone axes and thrown rocks to the fight. It also means they have absolutely zero practical military experience at any level and those Tripods, are being crewed basically by civilians.

The fight with the warship was FAR FAR better in the novel than the ferry scene. Don't know if it was cut for budget or if was just because they thought spending a lot of time in the basement with crazy Tim Robbins was more interesting. They were wrong. Also the humans had the easiest counter measures possible available to them and never figured it out. Generals are often stupid, but someone should have figured out that the shields didn't prevent non-moving objects from passing right through. So easy to set traps to wipe them out. They were actually more vulnerable than our tanks or war ships. It would be interesting to see someone else take a crack at this and remove the stupidity to make it exciting (and we don't need the basement scene ever again).

The "bodies in the river" scene is based on a scene from the book. The british tv version has this scene included and it's awesome. There's a concept I've seen floated around that I quite like, as one solution to the Fermi paradox, and it stems from the Warhammer 40k concept of a 'death world'. That is, a world with wildlife so numerous and dangerous that being outside without protective gear or a ton of experience is suicide. The idea posits that what if Earth was one of these worlds? A planet considered so dangerous because of it's hyper-competitive and predatory life that aliens simply avoid it. Given that in some circles there's a belief that alien viruses might not be dangerous to humans because they would simply be 'incompatible' with lifeforms sufficiently different, it's possible the Martians thought the same thing, only to find that terrestrial microorganisms are far more aggressive and adaptable than initially thought

Forward facing eyes doesn't necessarily mean predatory, it simply means they have evolved in an environment where depth perception is advantageous. With the theory that they evolved on a densely forested environment, depth perception would definitely be helpful when judging distance for travel between said foliage

@@xrefed One key difference - Rachel is a child screaming for her dad. Children in distress in the first place activates a natural protective empathy in Humans and many other mammals. Children in distress crying out specifically for their parents makes that protective empathy hit into overdrive, especially for Humans. Simply put, you *_DO NOT_* mess with our young unless you want to get mauled en masse. And Humans are stubborn to a fault. Put those two together, and Rachel being the only kid there terrified for her parent is the spark needed to get people to act - so much was already lost, a child doesn't need to lose her dad on top of all that.

My theory about these aliens is that they believed their strange vine like food source would basically terraform earth and destroy any bacteria on it. After all, they only got out of the ships when this vine began to spread. However, since this thing was made using human materials, it’s likely some of these bacteria were able to adapt to such an attack, and then spread to the invaders

If we went by the book, however, the vine was simply an invasive species the martians carried to Earth unknowingly. In that case, if we continued looking at the book, the martians died off because of their food source - humans. They had no digestive system, so they’d capture creatures that could eat and then take their blood, injecting it into their own bloodstreams. While transferring the nutrients from the organism into themselves, it also carried the diseases that humans had.

The book explains the bodies in the river, actually. At one point, in a city upstream, people tried crossing the river during a tripod attack. The lasers actually ended up boiling the water, cooking everyone in it alive. So what the daughter is witnessing at the 12:00 minuet mark is the bodies washing downstream.

That boat scene was shot in Athens, NY and my dad got to be in the shot - He went up to, and spoke directly to (he was not supposed to do this) both Tom Cruise and Spielberg (who was being completely ignored because of Cruise lol) and said hi and thanked them for the movie and Spielberg was really cool about it whereas Cruise just smiled that "I'm totally not in a cult" smile and vigorously shook his hand.

For the record: in the original WotWs book, the aliens were pretty much just a brain with manipulators, because the author wrote them as a species so advanced that they did away with most of their internal organs, and are now basically just a brain with manipulators attached (as said). The original reason they started to capture people instead of downright killing them was because they would take their blood out and inject it into themselves, as instead of eating they used pre-nourished blood from other creatures having evolved away their need to eat. Similarly, the reason why they didn't even consider microbes to be an issue was that in the book they came from Mars and Mars was a much older planet than Earth, where all bacteria and microbes had died off. However, in this movie the aliens were changed to be these three-legged monkeys rather than the brain with tentacles they were in the book. Obviously, most of that doesn't make sense if you know anything at all of modern science, but considering how old the book is it's pretty amazing.

Wells says in the last chapter that other creatures, humanoid in appearance, were brought to Earth by the Martians in their capsules as a food source but were so fragile that they would have found even standing up in our gravity a challenge. The whole idea of the Martians was that H.G. Wells was trying to make them as strange and alien as he could possibly imagine. Why have two legs, or four, or six, or eight? I don't remember where I saw it but I think there's a thing with evolution that certain mutations are generally more efficient and easier to evolve. For example, a video called something like "why species keep evolving in to crabs". But there are lots of convergences in evolution on earth that will possibly be shared with other species as well, even on other planes. Stuff like eyes and mouth being close to the brain, or our heads being primarily on one side of our body and not centralized.

The fact that the aliens should have been able to tell our planet was a threat reminds me of a story I read once when I was a child. Some aliens were looking at Earth and deciding if they should invade. They saw stories of Santa. Now, this man was able to determine who was good and bad from his secret base in the north pole. He was also able to deliver gifts to the entire world all in one night. These things meant that he was either extremely technologically advanced or had an undetectable army that spanned the globe. Either way, they decided not to poke that bear and find a different world.

Something to note from the first movie is that we were able to determine that their species was a lot less complex biologically than we were. They theorized that their species was younger than our's too. Basically the implication is that since Mars is so inhospitable, the life there never got as advanced evolutionarily as Earth life did. Because of this, their immune systems were trash compared to our's. If I remember correctly the microbe that killed them was some random little germ that couldn't even affect us. Them able to get the technology to make it to Earth was a last-ditch effort to save their race. And their method of travel was literally giant cannons. The new movie changes that by saying they buried their vehicles centuries ago for some reason, so it doesn't make as much sense, but eh.

My primary theory as to why the Martians didn't know about or understand germs is... well, they literally wiped out all disease on their homeworld millenia ago, so long ago that they completely forgot such things existed. It would be a smarter explanation if the alien home world didn’t even have diseases at all. Imagine; Humanity arrives on an alien world with life that we don’t understand at all. All of the human arrivals die from an unknown cause that turns out to be some form of evolutionary process that happened only on that planet. @@Prada_GT I'd like to mention Deathworlders. Basically: Earth is like space Australia/Florida for aliens, a very hazardous and dangerous place for aliens. Meanwhile the majority of aliens who encountered humanity evolved in weaker environments and thus they are also weaker. Even the endgame species for these aliens was simply punched and killed by a Canadian football player when one ship landed in a Canadian football stadium. Plus, some planets they classify didn't have any diseases (because the environment was too clean and less aggressive) and Earth life was just too aggressive for them. We're basically the pinnacle of evolution in that online novel, thus, Deathworlders. Good read, still ongoing if you're interested. As for the tripod aliens though, I agree in what you said, aggressive microorganisms either ere eradicated or simply doesn't exist or not noticeable enough in their local biology because their immune systems eradicate them instantly, and they have to be weaker than any kind of known Earth microorganism. I'll also add that in the movie, they clearly have knowledge of biology....just not advanced enough; they were taking humans for some reason and tried to terraform earth with those blood-meat plants but died immediately. In any of these cases, their knowledge of biology is not enough at least and their immune systems are shitty.

I have a theory in regards to the shields randomly being disabled. My guess is that tripods are being operated via a neural link. Kinda like pilots operating a jaeger in pacific rim. Only in this instance, the machine is operated based on subconsciousness as well as actual movement. This could also explain why the tripods are basically giant representations of themselves. I think in regards to the river scene with bodies floating in it, I believe this is in reference to the original book where a group of people attempt to hide in a body of water to avoid the Martian heat rays (the original book describes the weapons as emitting a ray of superheated air invisible to the eye). Also why would Earth microbes interact with their biology at all? I always thought a good way to “foreshadow” the ending would be to have the US be undergoing a pandemic right before the invasion (hehe, too close to home, I know). In the background, you could have news reporters saying how the gov is working to contain the outbreak, but they’re concerned that the current strain will outpace their efforts. At a refugee camp, you could see staff struggling to help the injured AND contain infection-spread. Then at the end, you realize that the outbreak that was laying siege to humanity in the beginning was ultimately what saved it from extinction (but of course, nature is a cruel & fickle mistress, and the survivors will be worse-off against the disease with their medical infrastructure gone). The disease itself could be bird flu or Ebola, as both are familiar to audiences, the former is scary for its infectiousness, and the matter is scary for its symptoms.

...actually if a splinter is too deep to get out and not so big as to cause real damage (so an actually tiny splinter you just can't get out) your body WILL eventually just spit it out. It'll get irritated at first then it'll form a small cyst pocket around it and then one day it'll just push it out through your skin, usually with the skin over it dying. Then you'll just have a little indent and area with newer skin as your body heals the area. I figure the reason for the death or significant illness of the pilot deactivating the shield makes sense. If your pilot dies while in the ship, everyone has to wait for the power to run down until the shield can’t sustain itself to get the pilot out and get a new pilot in. So if you tie the shields to the pilot’s vitals, if they are injured enough that they can’t disable the shield to get help, the shield disables itself.

The original novel makes way more sense. In the book the Martians' ancestors eliminated the bacteria on their world long ago which could explain why they weren't prepared for the microbes on Earth. In the book they have a very definite plan and have been monitoring Earth for some time. In the book the Martians are motivated by survival as their own world is dying though they have a plan for humanity - they also want the blood but to inject into themselves. There is at least one humanoid race on Mars that they use for this purpose as the Martians have evolved into what are essentially huge brains. They make and use mechanical bodies according to their needs and no longer have a digestive system. In this sense it explains why the aliens in both the books and the film don't eradicate humanity - because that would be wasteful when they can be put to use. The N-Dimensionals in Invasion Earth also take this approach. The Martians who come to Earth in the book are more like colonists sent to tame a wild world. The aliens are so advanced in every respect that they probably only consider humans to be lower animals. There is some similarity to the aliens in the film here as they come across as farmers who's main focus is getting the planet ready for mass colonisation using the Red Weed. Incidentally - it is unclear whether the Red Weed was unleashed on purpose or by accident in the novel.

The Novel Footfall by Larry Niven is a fantastic read if anyone wants to know what an alien invasion would be like. It’s a bit more realistic as it gives the aliens in the novel a reason for being kinda stupid. See we think aliens would have the same concept of war as we do. YeahC they know war, but their concept is a little different. In the book the aliens are evolved from herd species similar to elephants and their entire view of how things work comes from there. If one herd shows another herd they’re more powerful, the other herd must join that herd for losing essentially a slapping contest of sorts. They come to earth unprepared for a war of attrition. All they know about humans is we exist and they want our planet. So when they give us a black eye, they’re horrified we retaliate and continue to do so. Like legit can’t cope with a human style war. They make some unbelievably bad decisions cause they have no experience in fighting a war like this. I mean I don’t want to give away spoilers, but humans more or less use the spare space shuttles to build a warship to take on their mothership. Its nothing fancy, it’s basically a giant nuclear missile with human pilots. Yeah, it’s a Kamikaze ship. That’s what it is. So I can see the aliens in WotWs having a totally different view of how things work and be pretty stupid.

I still love this movie. Most terrifying scene, for me, was as the invasion was beginning, when a hole appeared in the middle of a street. It wasn’t that occurrence that got to me, it was the curiosity of bystanders, staying, not initially fleeing. I have to agree with the War of The Worlds alien's being from a planet where cells didn't square off against each other. They would have been fine inside their machines, but went out to explore man-made structures. As for the ending of the movie, I think the reason their tripod shields went down was because of the birds that got past their shields. The shields only seemed to come up when under attack from actual weaponry like bombs. The shields didn't seem to appear to protect against organisms, like humans or birds. The birds disrupted their shield, which was how humans were able to take them out. The aliens got sick and died in their own machines too.

I will say I think one major issue with this movie is just that it's a modern movie trying to adapt ideas and concepts from the late 1800s/early 1900s. Like for a bit of context, when the book was written Germ Theory was like a relatively recently accepted theory on how disease works that was rather innovative for the time since it gave a genuine explanation for some of the most horrific ailments affecting people. Back then when writing about aliens it probably wasn't seen as big of a stretch that they'd overlook such things because microbes are so small and easy to overlook as well as the fact that in the book, while the Martians were "advanced", they weren't really like as advanced as we'd consider "modern" aliens to be. The best way to describe it is they were advanced in the same way people in the early 1900s thought people in the 2000s would be. Like for example they didn't even have spaceships they used to get to Earth, instead they all literally yee-hawed their way to Earth by shooting themselves out of massive cannons on Mars. The most advanced piece of "tech" I'd say they had in the book were their heat-rays, as everything else had a rather strange rickety piston-and-rivet feel to it all that the humans actually were able to take out with conventional weapons. With that in mind it makes more sense why the Martians got domed so easily by bacteria in the book, it was because in effect they were basically Victorian-era "futuristic" aliens that had heat rays and tripods while at the same time still using lead-based makeup and radium paint.

the aliens in the original novel that i remember were terrifying. like carnage and venom scary. didn't they send tentacles out from their engineering pits to grab people so they could dismember and assimilate DNA by grafting it onto their own, making them stronger and stronger? and the same thing with their tanks. they could just grab scrap metal and build them on the spot. plays into the theme that an invasive species from another planet would be harvesters. the original book was brilliant, nothing like the movie adaptations. the original conan the barbarian that i read is no longer in print, not online. way more savage than the movies. really, really good books. Plot. Honestly now the orginal books make more sense. They came down in cylinders and took several days to get the tripods up and running. They would kill anyone who got near them. As the days past more cylinders crash lander on earth and the goal of the aliens was to reach the crash sites to help them get up and running. In the book when the aliens came out a guy fell in the hole. Right when everyone saw his head and him climbing out the aliens grab him and you heard him shrieking and screaming before it ends. They had some weird item described as a mirror that started off using the heat ray to hold back the humans.

One interesting concept I remember being brought up with the aliens in like some behind-the-scenes and concept stuff was originally the aliens were meant to have like completely different and alien thought patterns and lines of thinking compared to humans. Like for example it was said somewhere they never invented the wheel and instead went down a completely different type of technological path and that they were only able to do this because they're innately adept at engineering but severely lacking in other fields. Though it's still kinda weird, following this concept it could be that for whatever reason due to their alien mindsets they just never really realized that microbes or even biology in general is a thing. It kinda makes sense a bit because we don't really see them take into account biological needs, like hell they don't even wear clothes. The absolute most we see is them using human blood to spread their flora but honestly just spraying blood out of a giant hose as fertilizer for their plants doesn't really scream "biologically adept" to me. With that in mind it might be they don't even really know that the blood is feeding their plants, just that "red human water make roots grow, so let's just spray it everywhere."

There's another sci-fi series with the premise that anti-gravity is actually very easy but is such a different path of development that those who discover it early miss all sorts of other things and they become very dependent on the anti-grav while humanity missed anti-grav but developed so many other techs out of necessity and consequence. Hence you get the silliness of aliens showing up with FTL spaceships but trying to invade with basically cannon technology only to get obliterated by humans with supersonic missiles, machine guns, and even lasers who then proceed to capture an alien ship and reverse engineer the anti-grav concepts that had eluded them spelling doom for many alien species.

The forward facing eyes actually makes a lot of sense with your hypothesis that they are from a dense foliage environment. Forward facing eyes helps with depth perception, generally being associated with helping gauge where the creatures' prey is in relation to them, and side eyes are for seeing all around to be vigilant for predators. Example: Deer have side eyes in order to have a wider field of vision to see wolves, which have forward facing eyes in order to better see how far or close the deer is. But such depth perception is also very advantageous for tree dwellers, because you're not as often going to be attacked from the sides while you're on a branch. But if you're running from a predator, or looking at food that's on another tree, you better make sure you're able to make that jump to another branch.

Kinda bugs me that all other adaptations only focus on the tripods and death beams when the aliens in the book had so much more. They gas the London defense when they see that a full front assault is suicidal since the royal army fortified the city. Book aliens had varied weapons and tactics (I seem to recall they had flying machines?) that very few adaptations really take into account or expand upon, so we get just tripods that slowly kill humans with beams and have shields.

They were attracted by an explosion of a particular mineral on Earth, and decide to go and harvest it. They only brought enough forces to protect that operation, as no precident exists for a species surviving that kind of explosion in any viable manner. So the reason we manage to dunk on them pretty hard later is entirely justified.

Well it was all hope is lost at that point, keep in mind when the original War of the Worlds was written. An ironclad of the British Navy was essentially the epitome of humanity at that point. It was the strongest thing that they could even perceive of existing in human hands, and despite taking down a tripod, humanities greatest technological achievements were essentially just ran over. The book also implies throughout many different situations that the Aliens adapted, when one of the Artillerymen manage to hit one of the tripods because it was hidden in a treeline, from that point on the Aliens start gassing every single forest and city from long range. The aliens learned from the few times the humans got lucky and adapted. Back to the Thunderchild, the book says that the only reason the Aliens didn't vaporize it right away, was because they didn't really comprehend it as a threat as it wasn't firing its cannons until it was right up next to them. Very good book, still holds up even today. It goes into a lot of detail about the aliens too and really makes them seem intelligent. (Despite the germs killing them all, which if I recall was theorized that the Martians had lost all their immunity to germs as they had wiped out all diseases on their homeworld thousands of years ago.)

I remember what I thought was the worst thing about this movie were all the close calls. First in the street, then the house, then the boat, the military truck, the walls collapsing, the arms almost getting them, aliens going house to house for some reason etc. etc. Just missing the kid coughing on Tom and then him licking the alien overlord to make him sick and save the world. They could've built up more suspense with just observations of the rest of humanity getting wiped out instead of Tom dodging thing after thing last second over and over. ^_^

The Era in which the book is set makes the plot a bit more believable. (Although impossible with modern scientific knowledge. ) In the book, the aliens fired themselves over from Mars with a big cannon. So they were more advanced than the world War era London army, but not really space faring.

They probably are ectothermic animals like many reptiles such as snakes and frogs. So there was not much point for them to develop IR scanning technology back home unless they relied on it to search for natural heat source. Kind of make sense for the siren in the movie to signal the aliens to head back into the ship to avoid possible hypothermia or hyperthermia.

Here's the thing though, you would need infra red imaging or some sort of xray imaging to see through dust clouds in space. You can't be travelling at incredible speeds through space without knowing what's in front of you over vast distances, and simple dust would reduce visibility to unmanageable levels at the speeds required to travel to different star systems.

I like it. It kept the situation at hand the aliens themselves mysterious. Like the characters in the movie, we don’t know what’s going on, who’s doing it, or why it’s happening. We slowly learn more and more about the aliens as the characters do in real time. We learn they come down in the lightning storm early on. Then we learn they are indestructible and are in great numbers with the TV reporter. At the ferry scene we learn they’re snatching people up. At the house sequence we learn why, and finally are introduced to what these things are. It kept things interesting and realistic. When shit hits the fan we won’t know what or why before it’s too late. Kind of like the Covid pandemic, we didn’t know a damn thing about it until months after the lockdowns.

In the original War of the Worlds book, the martians were a comparison to the British Empire and the fact they were defeated with something so simple like microbes was an allegory to unknown native forces that could take the colonialists down from their own hubris. The entire book is a powerful retrospective on the destructive effects colonization has to native cultures who can't fight back, and it was done with a very clever use of role reversal that was not standard for the time! I believe in the original book the narrator theorizes that they did know about microorganisms, but had long since had their immune systems challanged. They are also Martian in the book and mars constantly gets bombarded with different types of radiation which would kill a lot of any life on the planet, this is because it has little to no atmosphere, so in theory they wouldn’t know about bacterium if they didn’t exist in other forms on the planet in the first place, or could be that life is so spars on their mars that they simply don’t have anywhere reasonable to find bacteria that it could survive on mars, this makes sense because with absolutely no bacteria or viruses able to survive on the planet they wouldn’t need to evolve with an immune system that can attack against such bodily attacks, so this all ties to why they die so easily due to simple earth bacteria, plus there tripods are very organic looking with mucus and what looks like gum tissue, if the tripods themselves are biological entities from the same planet it would make sense they would fall to the same foe as once one has been infected the other is in immediate contact so infection is enevitable. Bit long I know but it’s the most scientifically reasonable conclusion I could think of to explain it all.

With everyone jumping, the invaders would see it as an opportunity to harvest the humans rather than kill them, probably why thats what they did in the fate of the ferry scene.
