What is War on the Sea?
1942: The world is at war
The Japanese Empire expands throughout the Pacific where Allied forces attempt to halt its spread. A desperate struggle for control of the Solomon Islands is now underway.
How will you protect your transports as they deliver troops and supplies in the South Pacific? Will you deploy precious aircraft carriers to provide air cover? Do you screen the area with submarines? Or attempt to lure the enemy navy into a decisive surface engagement?

That's good because look at his initial fleets(3 heavy cruisers, 2 lights, 3 destroyers, and some transports for 2 destroyers to escort before joining the group). Suspiciously similar to Tassafaronga, just swap 1 light for a heavy cruiser and proceed to underestimate Japanese long lances.

Apparently one of the most effective tactics against dive bombers was... doing tight circles. Kinda makes sense since it would throw off the aim of the aircrafts quite a bit while keeping the ships in relatively close formation to défend each other, so idk, maybe it works in this too ?

I dont think it would throw off the aim for the pilots in this game atleast. It might concentrate the AA fire though, which would help.

Staying in tight formation during an air attack is essential. It helps you to concentrate your firepower using all ships for each formation of planes. The one mistake I see being made is sending each ship into a different direction. The standard navy tactic was that all ships turned together. By turning in a circle they not only kept their guns concentrated but it's harder for the bombers and even the torpedo planes to center up on one ship. It's much harder to calculate a drop point when the ship is in a tight turn as opposed to running in a straight line.

@@marksmith9350 AI is kinda stupid in this game, so mod does not change it dramatically. the most power AI has is unlimited planes(CVs are replenished the next day as ground fields). in tactics battle basically it does not change its target chosen at the beginning. and its not making any maneuver to reduce AA or make better chances of hitting. so basically in most cases AI planes will come somewhat aside from some "AA-friendly" angle make 1 bomb run an flee. players tactic is simple: straight line formation with good distance to be able to find who's the target. After detecting, target ship goes max speed, makes slight turn off the run to line "behind" the other's ships AA guns. for every 6 bombers usually its 1-2 hits per engagement(and 1-2 bombers down) which is not that bad - player's runs usually way more effective. Sometimes its possible to distract fighters from bombing with few dive bombers circling just in front of ships. but thats goes only for fighters. other planes will ignore them all the time. CAP fighters are 1-time use too - 12 fighters make 1 engagement to enemy bombers and half of them down(??? but that's the tactics battle goes), half of them smoking so next wave of enemy planes will come unattended. To summarize: the main solution against enemy planes player has - is to detect targeted ship as early as possible and make her max speed and course behind the other's AA guns and pray ) all other means are just useless.

Even among the WoWs community, Cleveland is a fan favorite. I've grinded my way to Worcester, two tiers above her, but I still remember my days operating her fondly. She really is a great ship, and am glad to know we didn't lose any of them. Who knew that the ever-so-American concept of "GUNS. LOTS OF GUNS" would have worked out so well?

The Gleaves itself shouldn't even be operating in the Pacific. It was part of Atlantic convoys and attacks on Atlantic and Mediterranean targets during WW2.

Wolf when Vals are diving on you try to turn the ship towards them so they have to get a more hard dive and maybe force them to miss and abort mission. Remember: Turn only when the Vals are starting to dive on you.

Great that War on the Sea is back, loved the last series and this will no doubt be equally as good. A small suggestion - Each turret on a ship can take individual orders which helps for certain tasks, though it can be a bit mircro-managey. For example, The atlanta could fire Star shells from its two flanking turrets when line of sight allows while the other guns fire HE, saves you going through all your star shells in one go and keeps targets lit for longer. Or you can have one turret fire spotting, while the rest don't to keep your solution up. Its fun to see what you can do with it :)

@@adamtruong1759 Sure, but Fire at will also selects its own targets and changes the target at will. you have no control over it at all. So no firing at targets of opportunity or focusing fire on a target you want destroyed. its a tool meant to fill a hole while you do target designation on other vessels, not for fighting the whole encounter.

One tip for star shells, the best way to use them is to purposefully fire them behind where the enemies are or where they are going to be as it illuminates them far better against the horizon and it keeps your own starshells from illuminating you at all. Take a somewhat large spread if possible and cast the shells out behind the enemy ships so you get to see their entire taskforce backlit by the shells and they can't use the light to see you.

My grandfather served in the Navy in WWI and WWII. My father and uncle were in the Navy in WWII. All of these sailors received Purple Hearts, my grandfather in both World Wars. I listened to a lot--I mean a lot of war stories growing up. I am 72 and know the history of these two wars, as well as the tactics that worked. My grandfather was given a commission from enlisted to officer after Pearl Harbor, where he was on board one of the ships that was sunk. He was given command of a destroyer that he said, "Got shot out from under my ass in the Coral Sea." So, I want to recommend using torpedoes one at a time, spread out, somewhat regularly, not all in one shot. Once they dodge the "group" you have shot your wad. Sporadic shots with torpedoes can get lucky. I have the problem when I play these games of empathizing with the men screaming their lives away being burned and drowning amidst the wreckage and I play them to avoid casualties. If you were losing hundreds of men during this engagement, is this what you would be doing?

Gleaves, Gwin & Hughes were in part lost due to a loss of Situational Awareness (torpedoes & collision). But thereafter was a good comeback after those early setbacks in the night battle.

It is worth mentioning that when your on map screen, and you select one of your current fleets, and select the option to merge, release, split, etc. There’s a option to get ships repaired at your home port (I think this needs a level 5 port). This could help with your cruiser force being already damaged. Please note though repairing ships would take days to complete (i tested a destroyer would need 8 days to repair for example)

Fun fact.... While the official name of the Guadalcanal Operation was _Operation Watchtower,_ it came to be known by most who fought in it, regardless of branch of service, as _Operation Shoestring._ Because supplies of almost everything were limited. This was because of _Operation Torch;_ the Invasion of North Africa, in the Atlantic Theater. I liked how you worked in _Shoestring._ I hope you'll do another campaign, and clear the Solomons up to Bougainville before you close the game. In battle, have one Destroyer firing starshells, so your Cruisers can focus on enemy ships. Use Atlanta class against light Cruisers and Destroyers, others against heavy Cruisers.
