Even better, the next plane in the series, the F9F-9, was redesignated the F-9J. USN Aircraft name shenanigans are pretty great.
@CountArtha
@CountArtha 5 жыл бұрын
The USN adopted the Air Force naming scheme in 1962, so the F9F became the F-9 Cougar and the F11F became the F-11 Tiger. Air Force planes were designated by type and a more or less randomly assigned number, while Navy planes were designated by type _and_ manufacturer. Grumman Aircraft Corporation was assigned the "F" code - so the first F stands for "fighter," the second F stands for Grumman, and the number in between represents how many of the company's designs had received a Navy designation. The Wildcat was Grumman's fourth fighter design (F4F), the Hellcat was their sixth (F6F), and so on. This is also why some Navy planes from World War II have multiple designations: The Avenger was the first torpedo bomber built by company "F" Grumman (TBF) and by Western Aircraft, a division of company "M" General Motors (TBM). The Corsair was the fourth fighter built Vought, which belonged to company "U" United Aircraft (F4U), but it was the third fighter built by company "A" Brewster (F3A).

The problem with the early guided AA missiles were that they made to kill big bomber aircraft that have huge turning radius that left them vulnerable to the missile's locking target system whether it's radar or infra-red. But when it was used against nimble tight turning fighters, the target systems were not responsive enough to get a good lock to attack(more so for the infra-red than the radar variant where you have to keep the main radar pointing at the enemy fighter much longer than usual.).

The original F4H/F110 was designed as a fleet defender against big Soviet naval aviation bombers attacking the carriers and in that tactical situation missiles made sense. In the late 1950's when the aircraft was first designed none of the fighting over Vietnam had happened and nobody could see that coming. The engineers at McDonald Douglas did exactly what the customer wanted.
@robertschumacher2707
@robertschumacher2707 5 жыл бұрын
In Vietnam, the teething problems of the missiles was only half the story. The other half is that they were supposed to be fired at beyond visual range- something that Washington then completely changed by forcing pilots to visually identify their target before firing. And by the time you could visually ID an aircraft, you were usually too close for accurate missile shots. especially with radar-guided missiles.

I remember it being mentioned (in the book 'Phoenix Squadron' by Rowland White) that 'Top Gun' wouldn't have been what it was if it wasn't for the methodical research and teaching methods of Royal Navy pilots attending the school in an exchange program. Apparently the american aviators approach to teaching was "I did this to score a MiG kill, so you should do the same", with different instructors having used different methods. The british pilots instead started by looking at the capabilities of their aircraft and went from there.

Speaking of guided missiles not going where they're supposed to, years ago I was playing a combat flight sim called EF2000. I was flying a ground attack mission and was using a strange type of radar guided ATG missile that you would fire and it would go way up into the stratosphere and then hang by a parachute and search for a ground target to lock on to. When it locked it would jettison it's parachute and launch off to the target. So I was flying a bit low and had fired this missile off some minutes ago and was constantly switching the camera view to the missile to see what was happening in anticipation when all of a sudden it gets a lock and flies off to destroy its target. I pull up a bit and then level off and put the jet on autopilot so that I can watch the missile hone in on and destroy its target without interruption. A minute or so later as I'm watching the missile zoom toward the ground at incredible speed and admiring the game world I see a small dot moving really fast close to the ground and I notice that the missile is following that dot and honing in on it. As the missile gets closer the dot solidifies into an aircraft, a very VERY familiar aircraft. Moments later my jet is blown to smithereens by its own missile. How, with it being a ground attack weapon and me being a jet I dunno but the whole incident was both highly amusing and very frustrating and left me scratching my head for a while.

What Jingles didn't mention is the failure to equip guns on fighters along with the higher farther faster design the the F-4 embodied resulted in a man by the name of John Boyd in the USAF voicing his critiques on how aircraft should be designed. He was essentially a martyr for voicing up his concerns, but ultimately the Air Force and Navy took his advice it resulted in the F-15/16/18 aircraft which were actually designed for air combat.

The F-4 Phantom, proof that if you put big enough engines on a grand piano it’ll fly. It seems strange that when it was the U.S.N. that made such a big thing about improving air to air combat yet they never adopted a version of the Phantom with a built in gun even after they became available.

When you have a rocket powered whatever, that spectacularly malfunctions, and tears itself apart (which is possible with an air-to-air missile), it's called a RUD. Acronym for Rapid Unexpected Disassembly.

Point of interest, Jingles: The US Navy's variants of the F-4 Phantom II (F-4B, F-4J, F-4N, F-4S) never had a gun. Whether they used a podded M-61 20mm Vulcan for any air-to-air kills might be worth investigation, though. The Wikipedia article on the M61, for what that's worth, mentions that the external pods had a reputation for inaccuracy, and the list of air-to-air kills involving the M61's use in Vietnam only mentions 3 using podded M61, both from USAF pre-integral-gun models of the Phantom II (specifically, two MiG-17s by F-4C firing the SUU-16 in 1967 and one MiG-21 by F-4D firing the SUU-23 on 24 October 1967).

To be fair, as I understand it the F-4 was originally meant as a fleet-defense interceptor, to be loaded with missiles, scrambled from carriers, and used to shoot down Soviet bombers. Not as much need for guns in that scenario. At least one of its contemporaries, the F-8 Crusader, did in fact have four 20mm cannons as its primary armament. But statistically it relied a lot on the same Sidewinders as the Phantom, as the guns were prone to jamming if fired while the craft was under high G stresses. Which tend to be common in air combat close enough to necessitate a gun in the first place.

Don't know about the cost of a 20mm but the 30mm round of the GAU-8/A Gatling-style autocannon in the A-10 Thunderbolt II originally cost between $3-$4 each. Don't know the cost of a Sidewinder but based on the price of a Hellfire you could fire the GAU-8/A for several minutes for less.

14:15 After the Navy implemented the FWS, the difference was so dramatic that the North Vietnamese Air Force commanders finally just told their pilots: "Don't dogfight with the grey Phantoms (USN). Only dogfight with the camouflage Phantoms (USAF)." The USAF would eventually go on to implement their own version of the FWS, called Red Flag, in 1975.

Well, to be fair to McDonnell Douglas, they designed the F-4 without guns because that was not part of the Navy's Request for Proposal. It was to be an all weather interceptor and the doctrine at the time was that guns were no longer needed.

another problerm the US had over vietnam was that pilots where expected to confirm an aircraft was hostile before they started shooting. This severely limited their ability to actually use their guided missles. The Sparrow was in service at the time but was functionally unusable because by the time you could see the target clearly enough you where too close to use them.

Ah yes the F4s infamous gunpod. There’s video footage of these things in action on YT and they were hilariously inaccurate due to the vibration from the gun itself causing the thing to oscillate wildly whenever it was fired. They eventually “solved” the problem by doing what they should have done in the first place and equipping all subsequent variants of the F4 with an internal gun.
