I served in the same battalion as Hutch. Coolest dude ever. He was a legit great soldier and NCO. We always saw each other in passing and cracked jokes and busted each other's balls. He was totally different then. War fucked him up bad. He's always been an intelligent and thoughtful man. His story is definitely worth the listen.

@@Troll_Spanker so in your tiny little imaginary world a person can’t heal and be a good parent once experiencing addiction to a substance at any point in their life is an immutable fact? Or are you claiming you smoked meth with him daily so you know he is on it. You were there? You get high with him , you’re the witness that has the evidence? Or just someone that likes to say things that they believe based on absolutely nothing but your limited experience watching a video on KZbin?

i'm a UK veteran, unfortunately I was never able to explain to my children why I am the way I am and I really regret it, it took 20 years for everything to come to a head, I wasn't able to hold down a job or relationship and I became an alcoholic, I wish i'd been able to watch a video like this 30 years ago and maybe I would've been a better father and partner, well done Hutch you're an inspiration

Mark Twain said: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” Watching SWU is like traveling. You’re traveling into the lives of others. You show the humanity of people that might otherwise be marginalized. This channel is a treasure.

As a marine, this guy is a true inspiration to all veterans...he literally changed his life in order to become the best dad he can be to his son. Not only that, he has no shame for what he did or what he has been through, because it takes a special kind of someone to sit up there and tell everyone your life story. I was there when he was and went through very similar experiences over seas. PTSD is very real and these guys coming back need all the help they can get. I hope you get the VA assistance you need and some compensation for what you've been through! Keep on fighting the good fight brother, we all have your 6 out here.

This channel does an incredible job at helping people from the audience to get to know themselves better through the experience told by the people who are interviewed. Mark is fantastically receptive in the way he lets people walking through their discourse and only intervening to let them walk further through their thought process, getting them back to the track of what they want to express in a way they never had the opportunity to express before. I'm sure all this library of interviews will be seen for the centuries to come as a treasure of sociological and anthropologic data.

Hutch, this has been very moving for me, because I had a rough childhood in Detroit as a White Boy. Public schools, trauma in the early years, broken family, the hood and stuff. The stigma that came with that era. My dad and older brothers were never in my life. My dad died young. Joined the Marines and spent 12 years active duty. Did Desert Storm. Left when my first born son was 3 weeks old. I ascribe to the same sensitivity as you. I appreciate your content so much! That you and thank Mark for doing the work. This means so much to me! I agree, siblings can grow up in the same family but experience completely different childhoods. What I love about Hutch is that he is brutally honest with himself and is a badass for facing his demons. And THAT is how you break the cycle and don’t pass it on to your kids. My father is a kurdish man who was tortured in turkish prisons for years, had a family and then voluntarily went to Iraq to fight for the Kurds against the Saddam regime. He came back as a stranger, a present but absent father. Nightmares until this day and still can’t talk about it. All I can do is return his unconditional love and just accept that it took me to break the cycle for me. I had to heal for my father and generations before until I felt confident enough to start my own family. It makes me incredibly happy to see stories like Hutch’s and how he is healing also to be good dad because no matter where you are from, the color of your skin, religion or status, wars are a different challenge for every soul. Thank you for sharing. Much love ❤️

"There are third-world countries in our country." I was on the Big Island for three years (K-K). I walked away feeling exactly like you stated. I learned more about racism in those three years than I would've thought possible. I had truly considered myself to be a non-racist. But being white in Hawaii taught me what it FEELS like to be pre-judged based strictly on my skin color. FEELING it made it real, not abstract or an intellectual exercise about inequality and the harm it causes. I consider those three years as being critical in my overall development as a human being. Now, almost 30 years later, it remains a jumping-off place from which I am hopefully still learning.

I am a white guy who grew up in Hawaii and I have family roots that go back more than 200 years. Many of my friends are part native Hawaiian. I never had any real problems with getting threatened or beat up for being a haole, mainly because I can speak fluent pidgin, I understand native culture, and I never came across as being a "mainland haole", which most locals really despise. That being said, I think the Hawaiian Renaissance, which started in the 1970s, has been a two-edged sword. On one hand, it revived much of the pride in native people and woke them up to the very real fact that Hawaiian culture had been marginalized, distorted, and sent on a crash course towards obliteration by the dominant Western culture. On the other hand it really has fueled a more intense and visceral dislike of white people in general. The "haole hating" has always been in the islands and it isn't limited to native Hawaiians (it has to do with the past exploitation of Asian field workers by white plantation owners), but to me, the last 40 years of the Hawaiian Renaissance has made it OK to overtly shit on white folks as a "payback" for all that's gone down over the years. And it has infiltrated every level of society, including the government. So yes, I agree. If you want to experience racism and you're a mainland haole with no clue about the complicated nature of race relations in Hawaii, buy some property in rural Hawaii, set up your living arrangements, and you'll get a crash course of what it is like to be flat out HATED for the color of your skin.

Just move to any major US city I grew up in Baltimore. First part of my life was in the county, we were all mixed together and got along just fine. My parents use to have all kinds of home movies from cook outs for just about every holiday and school events. In ALL of them you see every shade of skin and hair. Everyone is happy, having fun and getting along. I had no clue what racism was until life happened and we ended up moving into the projects. Life was rough until they realized my mother was a druggie and my dad had an endless supply of really good pain pills and I was more than willing to fight back. I got the hell out of the city at 18 and have only gone back to bury my dad.

Especially after seeing so many interviews on here where we see how unsafe environments impact people

Keep on keeping on brother! As a Former 1/505 3BCT ACO 82nd AB from 01-09 med discharged after eating 3 ak rounds on my last tour in Khost Afghanistan. Things still haven't been the same since that day in oct 09. We all gave some but some gave all and that's what keeps me from going insane over the things seen & done over there. Hutch, Thank you for your service & the inspiration to a lot of us vets. H-Minus & Charlie Mike! 🏴🤘🏼

Hey Hutch; Your first video really helped me. I'm in recovery for 3 different substances with 3 different sober dates and I just got my Gold Chip 4 days ago on August 17th this year was officially 1 year clean from Opiate pain pills. Your video helped me thru some of the tough times and the darkest days I've had. I'm 369 days clean today from Opiate pain pills and I'm doing great in my recovery. I wish I could send some money your way but I'm broke, disabled and dying and on Provincial Disability benefits and it's not much. I go without food for 10 to 14 days a month as some of my meds aren't covered. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers and positive vibes your way. Thanks again, Hutch. Thanks for doing these interviews as you in your first video explained how my PTSD works and I actually sent it to my family. Your words will help change lives one day as you helped change mine just by telling your story in your first interview with Mark. Stay Awesome and Frosty. You're tremendous and please just stick to making positive decisions and changes. You can do it. I believe in you. I truly do. Stay strong. ~Gh0sT

As a young man who’s 25, grew up in LA and use to tell my parents I wasn’t going to live to see age 18 this man has helped me a lot. At 25 I’ve outlived most of friends very few are alive, free, or not strung out. After a failed suicide attempt this channel really helped me acknowledge my pain and hitch really helped me understand that it’s okay to be vulnerable. In today’s society we’re just told to “man up, get a job, stop complaining” thank you mark and hitch for clarity, and helping with my healing process!

You are able to break things down so clearly & your years of work on yourself is a gift to us all. Thousands of people will see your videos in the months and years to come. And you will continue to help people with these interviews. You are such a blessing ❤ keep giving and giving please!
