I've found my Pagan heart listening to this magical music by Wardruna; I always knew that I had one but the prison of Christianity held me trapped. Freedom goosebumps my flesh when I listen. My imagination soars through my line of ancestors until I meet my Scandinavian forbears. I'm Irish and I know that the dna in me jumps with joy when I hear these songs by Wardruna...magical trips of imagination triggered by this sturdy rhythmic chanting of a song.

We're discussing the viking, though, their wars primarily consist of aggressive raids and destruction of foreign peoples. They rarely faced existential threat like the Anglo-Saxons did. Captive taking was very common in the Viking age, I don't think women and children were throwing their lives on the front-lines. Armies need to be disciplined and cohesive, women and children would be burdensome. That's why if 'shield maidens', ever existed, as there's very little proof they did, they would have been a small unit guarding the rear or baggage train. They found one vague piece of evidence (a viking women buried like a warrior), imagine characterizing an entire people with different tribes and customs from 1 archaeological find. Vikings were a more professional fighting force than other nations had, there's no need to utilize women or children.
