When looking at Goldschmidt his exit velocity wasn't bad. His WALK rate tanked from around 90% to under 40%. Wardy I think you need to do a deep dive. I think this could be a homerun if he fixes that.

If the Mets don’t give up the farm to get Vlady now, like the Yankees similarly did for Soto last year, then sign Pete now. Then if they get Vlady next year, Pete can DH as he will be older anyway. If they were to trade for Vlady now, there’s no way Cohen will lose him next year plus Vlady will see the better winning future he could have. Sign Manaea , a reliever (Scott) and hope to sign Sasaki.

Alonso's slow swing depends on luck or guessing what the pitcher is throwing. The problem is, most teams know how to pitch him and Alonso appears to make little or no adjustments. How many hitters get jammed on pitches that never are near the strike zone? Alonso seems to get busted inside where he swings and misses at pitches that almost hit or he pops up weakly to the right side. If this doesn't happen, he's wildly swinging at pitches that are way outside, or w/being fooled, he takes strikes on the outside corner. I would only want Alonso back if he is willing to make adjustments and/or swing mechanic changes. Alonso is so talented that he could re-tool his swing so that it would not be so wristy and slow through the strike zone.

I would offer Pete 5 years at 30m a year or 3 years at 35m. Both overpays but Pete is more valuable to the Mets than anyone else. The five years is a long time but it coincides with the 5 years before Soto has the option to opt out. Pete will lengthen the Mets lineup as needed. He plays everyday without taking up the DH spot. I think he is a better fit for the Mets than anyone else. Pete knows that. Hopeful that gets done.

Stearns, as smart as he clearly is, needs to learn to “read the room.” Bringing Pete back, even if you think it is on a slight overpay, does a ton in terms of good will with the fan base. You can’t mortgage the future, I get it … but maybe some flexibility in getting this done. The fans want it, and a power bat behind Soto is meaningful. Don’t lose Pete over one year. That’s my thought.
