Funny thing, is that the "engineer" title that Vauban gets is a reference to French military Engineer Sebastian de Vauban, who built fortifications and defensive strongholds. With that context, anyone who's ever spent a 30 wave defense mission with Vauban and Frost watching those two play Chess all match will have to agree that the name fits. Both before and after their update. Protea, meanwhile, is a *bodyguard*, the engineer monicker is purely because of TF2. In the context of her role as a bodyguard, however, her powers make perfect sense. Defensive turrets to saw down anything in a chokepoint, shields grenades to protect the principle, time warp to undo fuckups, and so on. The problem really is that gamers are, by and large, idiots, and don't bother looking deeper than buzzwords to make sure that something is described accurately.

Storywise, she's a bodyguard. Designwise, 3 of her 4 default abilities are "action game engineer" with the last ability being the time manipulation part. Let's say that she's the kind of engineer that goes into the enemy lines as a soldier while Vauban acts more as a backline engineer.

Sure, lorewise she's a bodyguard but in ACTUAL GAMEPLAY, she's the battle engineer to vauban's defensive engineer. Her shield orbs are really the only part of her kit that really feels bodyguard-like. Her offensive abilities are both oriented towards area denial over single target damage, like most of vauban's, but they're much more disposable and favor more aggressive playstyles. Her dispenser isn't JUST for protecting her team, it acts as a force multiplier by allowing everyone to use vastly more abilities and ammo than they could normally. I would say the health orbs are by far the least important thing the dispenser does, actually. And I'm ignoring the time travel thing because even a half decent build renders it pretty much irrelevant which is a damn tragedy cause its super cool.

@@internetcampbell2267 That's a decent option, but freeing an arcane slot can be even more valuable. Something like pistoleer and avenger lets you go full weapon damage arcanes. Also energize is way less energy with the cooldown, and slower overall. You get 100 energy from the jumbo health orb instantly, so you don't have to wait 3 seconds for the energy orb to come out to start casting. Having used both, I'd much rather put equilibrium and a random synth mod on my pet for more energy and arcane flexibility.

To me, Vauban feels like he is an artificer rather than an engineer. Vauban uses a ton of gadgets to enhance his combat capabilities. Protea seems to focus alot more on the combat engineer archetype much more. They're similar but the distinction I think is that Protea invests lots of resources into locking down an area while Vauban locks down the area around him.

Well actually she’s a bodyguard archetype. Vauban is based off some French guy that I spent 30 seconds researching but I digress. Protea is designed to lock down areas and despite gamers refusing to admit that turret does not equal engineer, it makes sense. All of her abilities do, she can protect her client with shield the turret to control the field, the dispensary to keep ammo up and so forth, and of course time reversal in case any unexpected situations occur

The inception of Protea showed me just how entitled the WF community has become. Her abilitiy set is among the best in the game when you don't look exclusively at damage-per-ability-press but the ease of use and utility too. She doesn't have one ability that goes boom on a single buttonpress(well she kinda also has that in addition...), but her combined abilities that are gloriously spammable do very good damage and disable whole rooms of enemies with stagger while she also delivers infinite energy and ammunition for the whole group along with some super lifeorbs for good measure. Her 4 is imho the technically most interesting 4 in the whole game and has insane damage potential if you only want to use it for that. On top of that it is also all incredibly easy to use, just spam away with your stuff, make whole rooms a stagger-to-death chamber for enemies with complete disregard for efficient play or energy constraints, while you post on the forums about how bad the frame is 'cause the enemies that can't even reach you before they die should really die much quicker.

Honestly her rewind is great when you have a gun with really long reload time. I also use it to rubber band myself backwards to my dispenser, and back to objectives very quickly. That said, most of the time it isn't very useful.

Protea Tip: use Synth Fiber on your companion and Equilibrium on Protea. You will always be able to pick up health orbs and they will give you tons of energy. Never EVER worry about energy.

This trick also works if you're running in a squad with Protea, Nekros, even Nezha. Also, Synth Deconstruct does supply a decent amount of health orbs, even if you're not running with a frame that generates the orbs. Enough to probably double the amount of energy enemies drop (if you have a weapon on your sentinel that hits enemies consistently).
