So those first chaos marines you fight are called Rubric Marines and they are basically walking suits of armor. They were created by "failed" (or rather twisted by chaos god) sorcery that saved them from physical mutations by turning them into barely sentient dust and fusing them with their power amor (they are basically ghosts in a moving armor). You can see that dust escaping and armor falling apart when you "kill" them.
