Warhammer 40k 3rd edition battle report. Eldar vs Catachan jungle fighters

Welcome to the jungle. Deep in the jungle a Falcon crashed carrying an important member of the conclave. The race is now on for both forces. the Eldar of Alaitoc are on a rescue mission but the Catachan are on the hunt.....

Love to see these battle reports. 3rd-4th edition was my favourite time in 40k, especially those 3.5 era codices that came out around the 13th Black Crusade event. Whenever I can get some old games in I try and use those with the 4th Ed rules (which are almost the same as the 3.5 rules, which was 3rd with the updates from Chapter Approved). Jungle fighting is something I never did. Your easy solution of a good play mat with a nice spread of jungle terrain is obviously the way to go, looks good and is still a playable area, and something most gamers could actually do, unlike trying to build a whole jungle board.

Im building a catachan Army just for this purpose. Its gonna be third edition rules plus every other catachan special rules from every edition that fits And everything else that makes sense for the catachans. We will adjust the points for the enemy. Beer and chili is on me the host

This is great fun. I'll take a leaf from your book and see if my group goes for 3rd ed. It's definitely a system which still works well with a lot less models.

At least charges are not a mess in this edition. The old battle reports I have seen usually have a road down the middle, wide enough for one chimera or similar to move. The catachans were a weirdly terrain-specific army. And a separate army codex, not just a variation on the general imperial guard list.

@@bringbattlewargaming8720 Someone is going to think "What happens if we blast the lead vehicle to block the others?" or "What if we mine this single road with AT mines?" I know there was a lot of other funky terrain features in forest map generation. Maybe not the weirdest forests from RT, like a trapdoor spider that just eats a marine whole per round.

Roads in the 40k verse are only ever i vehicle wide..ULEZ in operation even in 40,000 years time....must have been really succesful.

@@richardbradley2335 In the jungle boards I imagine it's not even a road. It's a path some poor menials have bulldozed and hacked at to let terrain vehicles pass. A train track could be fun to place down.

Well that was awesome. I think the 6 inch shooting is a bit rought though. Maybe increasing it to 12 and 18 for the catachans or even 9 and 15 would make it more playable or maybe having a clearing or 2 instead. I lovee some catachans though would love to see catachans vs orks ala armageddon or catachans vs tyranids would be pretty cool too Well done though big ups for Jase for winning with the guard against the pointy eared hippies.

IIRC, don't the rules for jungle fighting generate a random number of clearings and a random number of paths connecting them? I seem to remember doing that would have helped break-up the board better. That being said, its been a long bloody time since I've used these!

How much special terrain did they have for forest worlds? I know you rolled from a whole 2d6 terrain feature table. I know there used to be terrain rules for all sorts of deathworlds, not just Cadia-style jungles. I'm not sure why Catachan got its own codex of all armies.

@@SusCalvin there are rules in the codex for randomly rolling terrain but we didn't use them. As for whu they had their own codex, might have been a sales pitch to promote the sales of their new plastic range of Catachan models

@@bringbattlewargaming8720 I remember that one guard codex later into 3rd had a small system for making your own regiment. You got to choose a series of unit options and doctrines. Close rank fire, ogryns, the savlar chem-breathers etc. Nothing as big as a whole codex. The most fun we had with the Only War RPG was making up and playing our own janky guard regiments. We played one loaded up to a man with ballistic shields and shotguns who went around cleaning rooms. They gave you a chunky points system to do so with.

Thanks for the report! Really interesting battle, not come across the jungle rules before. Rangers vs catachans was an interesting concept too. Think it'd be cool to try a Meatgrinder (in the jungle) - catachans vs tyranids for a real Predator meets Starship Troopers concept battle!

Thanks for watching. There is a battle in the 2nd edition Tyranid codex where a basecamp/fort filled with Catachan take on the Hive Mind. Might need to re create that

This is exactly what I want to do aswell! But I have a hard question regarding the Catachan codex: Deathworld infantry squad Options: "Up to one model may be armed with the following: flamer at +8 pts" Then it says: "Two of the guardsmen may be formed into a weapons team armed with one of the following heavy weapons: heavy bolter, missile launcher, heavy flamer" A Heavy flamer is also just represented by 1 model so what does that make the other? Do i just remove 1 lasgun model from the table or is that lasgun model supposed to stand close to the heavy flame thrower model within the squad? Or do both models have a heavy flame thrower each?! I just cant understand what they mean... :b

I have decided to make a Heavy flamethrower team represented by one model with the heavy flame thrower and the back pack tank tubes. Plus one model armed with a lasgun and a Jerry can attached to its back pack. To me this seems like the most logical thing to do.Both this models will stand close to each other within the squad.

@@anul6801 cool. I asked on the 3rd ed facebook group and they all said there is one carrying the flamer and just a normal guy and alot seem to have done a conversion. So you are thinking like everyone else. Sorry the reply was late

I know woodland/jungle terrain also messed with vehicles, nothing special except the entire table is difficult terrain for them. Walkers and dozer blades could work better there. Skimmers were not flyers, when they finish a movement "jump" in difficult terrain they could get snagged.

Normally true but in the Catachan codex there are additional rules and skimmers stay above the canopy.

I probably played 3rd Ed just as much as 2nd Ed so.. A bit nostalgia.. Did not like it as much, but it was quite fun..
