Regarding always going one step brighter with highlights: One thing I always try to keep in mind is that my painting lights are WAY brighter than display/tabletop lights. So often what might look almost over the top under the painting lights really won't pop nearly as much under tabletop lights. When in doubt, I'll step away from the painting table and let my eyes adjust to normal lighting and then take another look at the model to see how I feel about the highlights.

The part of the process I keep finding myself stuck at is how to choose the undertone/shadow color for any project. I never would have thought to use such a vibrant red.
@carlstanford76074 ай бұрын
You can get books on colour theory and there are tools online that generate complementary colours etc. hope that helps
@Merdurphace4 ай бұрын
@@carlstanford7607 that actually does help, a ton. Thank you! So at its most basic, I should be looking towards the complimentary color of my mid tone for my shadows/base color?
@FleshCastle4 ай бұрын
@@Merdurphace it all depends on the vibe you're out to achieve. Color theory isn't a set of rules, just a tool to find an end product you're going for. But don't worry about color theory too much, just focus on what looks good
@mandasity4 ай бұрын
@@Merdurphace You can use a general rule of thumb as a starting point for a number of different painting styles. Complementary colors create the most contrast possible using just the colors themselves (others include different varnish finishes, different saturation values like a nice vibrant blue vs a pale blue, etc.) and I wouldn't use them as the shadow to the mid tone unless I wanted something like a synthwave color scheme, or to go for something kinda like OSL to tie stuff together. My advice for something simple and basic is a darker version of the mid tone. Navy blue into ultramarine blue into a sky/powder blue for the highlight for example. Another example would be brown into orange into yellow. These are called monochromatic colors I think. Ninjon has this cool video where he paints one of those 40k space dwarves, whatever they're called, using a different artists' style and you'll see something similar to this skaven where the upper layers are a variety of colors that feel like 'normal' painting but literally all the shadows are some shade of blue/purple/magenta.. it gives an almost OSL like feel, like with this skaven, where it sort of unites the colors on the mini and would do the same across the entire army. Like the other guys said, color theory is great but it isn't a manual on what you should be doing.. especially since there's also a number of different types of complementary styles like split compliments or triads - I use color theory for inspiration or as a tool when I'm trying to achieve something specific.

I've got my solution for paint on mud, its a 250 ml thing of Daler Rowney simply acrylic matt medium, and then coarse texture medium by liquitex basics acrylics that's another 250 ml. This stuff goes far, I've based my Morkanaut, I've based a ton of other stuff, I've used the matt medium on a painting and liberally, and I've used it all for texture effects. Give this two part combo a try. First paint on your goopy coarse texture medium, this will give it a sandy look, which hey, you might dig. I needed it to be just a bit more damp and lose some of the crisp grain look, so with some gooped on matt medium, bam. I've got my favorite (so far) paint on application for a texture effect. With a two part solution I can tune some parts to look more gritty, and have more fine grains, and where I want a more glumped up mud? Just more gooped on matt medium. You can even sort of sculpt with the Coarse Texture, I used it to gap fill, and apply spittle, to a bomb squig that the mouth didn't quite meet the seem for the body. Same with matt medium, if you painted something with a primer, and want to do a quick fix, matt medium can gap fill for you pretty well.

Video suggestion based on a dilemma I face- how do you make things visually appealing /pop on a tabletop when they are supposed to be drab or dark?- it’s more a question of concepts . For example I struggled painting Be’lakor who is supposed to be made of shadow- how do I make him not just dull. I also faced this problem when I tried to use a military olive green/grey scheme for marines. They just end up flat or if I push the highlight I find that they turn a brighter shade of green or washed out. It’s kind of a question of how do you paint the contradiction if that makes sense something that shouldn’t be easily seen ….. but you want it to be easily seen?

Suggestion for next mini: why not mix both methods, starting with speed paint way for base coating and main colors, thus saving time in the first steps, getting a table top ready mini (for us lazy people), and then go a step beyond adding details and highlights more carefully (for those that want to make the minis stand out) using some of the steps of your two last vids. Showing pros and cons of the process. And for the mini itself, perhaps one of those stormcasts hero on the box? You already have them at arms reach over there, anyways :)
