Ive wanted a Bretonnian army since 3rd edition came out. Finally collected and painted one the year fantasy was killed and AOS was announced. I built it anyway, as a tribute. I used the old heraldry rules from the 96 army book and went so far as to build the little chapel from a White Dwarf tutorial as a center for my display. Ive played several games of AOS on magnetized bases (I refused to put them on rounds) and 1 game of 8th. Your battle report here has me so excited for the time I can finally get a game of Old World in with them! Ive seen a lot of Old World battle reports, but something about your style here gripped me like a rusty chain wrapped around my arm in a street fight.

I keep getting into arguments online about their viability and have found in the tourneys I have brought peasant men at arms or bowmen too. They're theoretically great on paper, but the nature of Old World being herohammer heavy just means blocks of infantry just don't really pull their weight other than as roadbumps. I've gotten some success with a Grail Reliqaue (and some arguing with people if I was allowed to embed a Paladin with a Grail vow and virtue of empathy in it to auto supply itself) but not to the levels where bringing them is an auto include versus just more Pegasus Knights. But I enjoy your videos for their analysis and more importantly data to back it up with your applied experience.

Thanks for the battle report and congratulations on your victories! I agree with your thoughts on meta chasing and the current state of the game. Warhammer has always been about more than just winning; it's about the nostalgia and the passion for bringing your beloved army to life on the battlefield. Without new rules, editions, units, etc. the game would eventually become predictable, and repetitive army lists surfacing can lead to despair. Coloring the game with missions forces revision, and in that can bring new excitement / perspective. Warhammer balances both the nostalgic past and the exciting future, and I love that. I still cherish my old Chaos army from the 80s and early 90s, hunting down those models as a young man when I started playing in 1994, and finally getting my hands on them over the years. Though I live in the States, I'd love to compete in UK tournaments - does anyone know which ones are coming up in 2025?
@DrBlaxill5 сағат бұрын
Exactly- the nostalgic past with the promising future combined. There are some facebook groups called 'Old World events' or similar. I'm admin on one of them. I also find the facebook events search is quite useful. Personally if I was travelling I wouldn't go to the London GT as my first pick as (being London) its not the most social- at some of the more provincial ones players will go to dinner on the Saturday etc or indeed also maybe play a casual game on the Friday night too. More of a full weekend experience. I do one tournament myself, London Legends, held in May time (c.40-50 players) although that's an 8th ed holdout!

I feel this list is good, but like an diamond in the rough it can still be distilled even more. 😅 3x3 pegasi? Hippogryph for the duke? BSB with virtue of duty and warbanner for +3CR? Something beardier can be done with those final ≈150 pts thats sloshing around as squires and yeomen here. 🎉 I'm bringing a very similar list to a few christmas games this year and will use questing knights as I have the models and I cant cheeze out. But I believe Blaxhill will evolve the list and will admire his brutality at the tables as I take notes and copy. 😂

I fear the obvious choice is get rid of the yeomen and squires and make a few cuts elsewhere and squeeze in another 3 pegs! But I am not sure I quite can bring myself to, it is so grim!!!! @mrsnakesmrnot8499Күн бұрын
Hippogryph does not get 360 line of sight, so a dragon can stay out of the Duke’s line of sight. The royal peg is most efficient. The points saved can go toward mounted yeomen who protect the mage from shooting attacks.

@DrBlaxill having watched through, glad to hear you discussing comp at the end. That's seemed like a big gap in the discussion around ToW balance, I think perhaps influenced by the 40k competitive scene's relative lack of comp? It certainly seems to be the way forward. I'd like to suggest, though, that it should start off relatively minimal, as a penalty to dragons, 360° nonskirmishers and relatively little else. To use your analogy of the ecosystem, I suspect that currently the dominance of draconic apex predators means that only they and armies well adapted to them can compete. Hence in part brets thriving - to borrow a concept that was used for Imperial Knights in late 40k, dragons set a checkpoint to be passed for any seeking to win a tournament, and Brets have the tools to pass this appropriately arthurian test with flying colours. Without this checkpoint, there'd be a flatter base of "top lists", allowing more of a showing from second-tier lists that could deal with some but not necessarily all of those non-draconic leaders. Anyway, being competitively interested but not active myself (played competitive 40k a while back but quit, never had a fantasy scene around me) I was glad to see you speaking to the "silent majority". Sadly, I think a lot of the louder voices for narrative and good old-fashioned fun have been siphoned off into the homebrew forks (especially WAP), leaving the core game discussion bound to RAW and competition. Temporarily, I hope.

We don't allow special characters in the national league here in my country (prior to old world we had a much stronger 6th ed. Culture rahther than 8th and in 6th it was the norm not to allow special characters in matched play) and i really think this factor really decides the stark superiority of bretonnians. They are still a top tier army even without the green knight but dealing with stuff like fanatics and elf dragonlords with 2+ wards is a break point you can't really achieve without an ethereal powerhouse that comes out and charges in the same turn.

Great video, I have to agree with your analysis of the Old World competitive meta, looking at these armies and these games they barely resemble what WHFB should (at least in my opinion) be, and that's sad to see. I also agree with what you said about "nerfhammer", I think that reworking core rules should always be preferred over specifically targeted nerfs to individual units, except in the most egregious cases, else it becomes an eternal game of whack-a-mole. In regards to your twin sentinels tournament I was wondering if there was anywhere we could see the final results for that, after finding out it used a home brewed scenario pack I was incredibly interested to see how that effected what performed well but couldn't find any information anywhere.
@DrBlaxill2 күн бұрын
The lists you can see on the 'Twin Sentinels' facebook page. The pack I think has been removed from there, but shoot me an email if you would like it (in my description). Yes, I must admit as a classically minded player many of the OW tables look horrible to me, especially the skirmishers and lines- and the fact that there is very little diversity in build and only a few armies. But to some extent one must respect the stylistic decisions they have taken, although some of the core rules choices are in my view very strange. More on these things in a couple of weeks time...

Good video, well done again on the win. My prediction was that this video wouldn't tell us anything different to the previous tournament one and I guess that's pretty much the case, still enjoyed it though. I do think it's slightly fortuitous that the competitive Bretonnia list still looks something like an army even if it doesn't play like one as you allude to during the High Elves game. How many elves were in that army by the way, the previous low that I've seen was 27?
@DrBlaxill4 сағат бұрын
Exactly. It doesn't tell us much more than the last one did. I made it mainly so I could discuss the game more generally- the actually battles were not the most immersive as they were too one-sided, apart from the second game. He had: 3 units of 5 spearmen, 5 silver helms, and 10 reavers. And then I guess two crew on the skycutter, elf prince, elf mage (though the dragons weren't modelled with riders). Yes, I heard about that. Not quite sure what I'd do there- certainly I couldn't engage the star, I'd probably just try and avoid it,

What were you running? Triple Carno?
@supercasual49502 күн бұрын
@@DrBlaxill 1 scar vet on a carno with the 5+5+ that can’t be modified And 2 ancient stegadon, since they count as chariots now they are immune to monster slaying blow and the S6 ap -3 was nice also the s6 impact hits and stomps coupled with 24 poison skinks and 5 magic missiles. 2 from the ancient Stegs 1 from a bastilladon 1 from the ruby ring and 1 from the skink priest if you roll fire ball, i also took a massive block of saurus lead by a skink chief bsb. I ran my big monsters and chariots in a formation so that the scar vet was in front at 12 inches and the ancient stegs at 15 so they can blast their burning alignments and then whatever charges into the carno needs to kill it, if it doesn’t they are getting counter charged by 2 ancient stegs one on each side, and since impact hits can be directed at anything in base to base and strikes at initiative 10 i simultaneously crushed the duke and the bsb on the same turn and since we were playing break point running didn’t do anything for my opponent, as if running would with 5 magic missiles hitting them in the back

@@supercasual4950 I'm not sure you are right about Stegadons, they "count" as chariots for LOS etc with Howdah rule but the unit type is Monstrous Creature: Behemoth so MKB works against them for sure.

Hello Dr. do you have any interest in making overview videos for the armies you play like you did for 8th ed?
@DrBlaxill21 сағат бұрын
Yes, I think so. They'd be good to do at one point- probably Bretonians I have more experience with, although I think I'd like a few games with Exiles under my belt first!
