the inside gaps caused by the side/straight pieces causing the models to not fit in flush was a design flaw IMO but apparently...it was so you could add grass/stones that cover the entire pieces that then blend into the models bases, so use the texture paint on the inner side/2mm of excess on each piece and the models will fit in flush on it

If you have a 3 printer, print some. If you don't, use some PVC sheets or balsa wood and cut them to size, it'll be cheaper.

I use thin cardboard with 5mm square section bamboo on the edges.

Seems like a redundant (which happens to be rather expensive) product. You can buy plastic card for much less. With some left over sprues, you can create some edges.

I use plastic card and for the edges I use cork sheets. Then just milliput any gaps to make the minis tight inside. Then magnetize. Boom, movement tray.

I have bought 2 packages of these Movement Trays and I only build up 3 sides of them and have a lot of extra corner and edge pieces left and I have used them on Polystyrene Sheets which you can buy in A4 format for almost nothing, of course you don't get the grid pattern on them, but you can easily do that yourself if you want it, either by carving it in with a sharp object or by painting it in.

Back during 7th edition i used to cmpletly ignore the grid and just messured how much space i need including the bit of space you get from the rim. today i would probably just use plastic card or a thin metal sheet with magnets under the bases. But i don't know if i want to go back into the old world yet...

The best part of the hobby for me is building the models, so i'll happily buy the GW trays because it gives me something else to build 😅 However, i'll be cutting the trays to exact size accounting for the lip, so i don't have that gap in the final result.

@@josephnott2956 I make quite a few comparisons between these and mdf trays in the video regarding price, design, and versatility. Personally I don't find them a great alternative for the price (about 40% cheaper than the GW ones), especially at the outset of a new rules system when we don't yet know what frontage/profile will necessarily work best with which units.

$40 here in the USA and I can honestly tell you its a rip off and not worth it. Just go get plasticard or balsa wood which is $35 cheaper.
