This is how I justified my Clockwork Soul Order Domain. She's a porcelain doll (warforged) that was given the spark of life. She interprets the patterns in nature and mortals, drawing inspiration from them and controlling the battlefield. Her friend is a Seer (Stars Druid, Div Wizard, and 2 Cleric) that draws prophecies and oracles from the stars (and Sehanine Moonbow) to "control fate" to a small degree.

This multiclass could also represent your characters call to action and set up a fun arc. Say you're an elven cleric of Hanali the goddess of love and beauty but then when your lover is murdered by the drow you make a pact with Shevarash the demigod of vengeance for the power to hunt down your foes. It creates a compelling duality without the black and white good God vs. evil god kind of thing.

Or something like you're a cleric of a sun deity, your warlock patron is one of the celestial beings who serves the same deity by acting the patron for some of his clerics' warlock powers. Or maybe you're a cleric of the Raven Queen, she gifts you with a sentient weapon that acts as your hexblade patron. A warlock's archfey patron tasks a player with infiltrating the church of another deity. In order to do so, said character has to become a cleric of that deity. A high ranking devil patron decides pursuing divinity is a more lucrative path to power than climbing devil hierarchy. He decides to start a church by naming some of his warlock clients as his high priests and grants cleric spells or warlock spells and invocations and tasks them with recruiting worshippers

I like how you mentioned referring to your character as something else in-game. Both a shadow monk and an assassin rogue might refer to themselves as a ninja, assassin, a stealth operative. Both a ranger and a barbarian might say they are outlanders. Your character might still think of themselves as whatever they did in their background, a sailor, a soldier, a diplomat, a chef. Most of the human population would be unfamiliar with magic (think about how much you know about helicopters) and a sorcerer might be considered cursed or blessed by the gods, and the child would grow up never hearing the term. Meanwhile, elves are inherently magical, and might have multiple names for a wizard based on their school or skill level.

A half-elf can point buy a 10/14/10/10/16/16 at level one. With stats like that we’re not even talking a character that’s ‘sickly’ or ‘frail’ just one who decided to develop the talents of their mind over their physical. Could even swap the 14 dex for 14 int to really roleplay it. The amount of utility and ranged ability afforded by the right subclass picks (or hell, go hexblade for melee effectiveness) probably creates a pretty sick Gish

That's actually a good hot take. If I have an intelligence of 8, my intelligence related rolls are equivalent with a dumb creature. That doesn't mean I'm dumb. It just means I have trouble with those specific tasks... I could say smart things, then roll and fail. For example because I am unlucky, or don't understand the base rules of the universe correctly (alien/dimensional traveller)
@chakatfirepaw

Something to remember about an intelligence of 8: About a quarter of the population has an 8 _or less_ in any given attribute. 8 isn't "you are absolute garbage in this area," it's "you're enough below average for it to be noticeable." 8 is only seen as "seriously bad" because the more recent fear of ever giving a player more than a minimal penalty at something gets combined with older stories about characters who had things like an Int of 4.

So effectively how my Drow Rogue/Fighter/Warlock ended up being. He became more and more devout to Eilistraee after a Near death experience gave him a vision of her and Lolth fighting over his soul. He began taking quests from the clerics of Eilistraee and trained to be a fighter so he was more effective in the service to his goddess, and more recently took up the Celestial Warlock as he was needing more effectiveness in his quests for her more powerful followers.

I did one where I was a fallen aasamar of a trickery domain god that I tried to trick into passing godship to me, when they realized I was tricking them they were impressed so as punishment I was sent to the mortal realm to cause trickery and spread the word. In the campaign we ended up getting into the fey wild and eventually met an archfey(may see where this is going). I tried to get her to try and loop me into a contract I could’ve never fulfilled and with a bit of luck and good dice rolls I slight of worded my way into a very beneficial pact where I got the most out of it and she was dumbfounded hence me becoming a archfey pact warlock. And it being used to better my ability to spread trickery and chaos for my god they were ok with the pact.

What stops someone from drawing power from 2 different dieties? This could branch into many different and interesting stories. Maybe the dieties are actually just having fun with you as their pawn, maybe it's some sort of diety twins who are either similar and/or opposite with how your power is granted to you or in their personalities (or both). Lots of ways this could be played out.

He's right your character sheet is for mechanics your imagination is for character. In my own characters an 8 int could be a professor of bardic studies with a narrow range of knowledge (barbarian). Or an 8 int down to earth ranger who knows everything he needs to survive in the wild and cares for little else. Neither was stupid just not good outside their fields. This goes hand in hand with "flavor is free." Consider a clockwork soul could be a luck bender. Barbarian rage could be a combat dance that requires one to enter the flow or a bestial transformation. Treat your elf as an alien, a rogue with the heart of a greedy dragon, a far traveler is literally an isekai protagonist, and of course dwarves as the truest beardiest men and women who are always willing to stand with their friends against the whole world.

When you said the word "Thaumaturge", I suddenly gained an idea for an evolving feat, or maybe even a wizard / artificer subclass for someone more creative to make? Thaumaturge You can utilize paper suited for noting down spells in a spellbook and your deep knowledge and experience in engineering the elements of magic, as an alchemist does for their ingredients. This enables you to research further, more advanced elements by combining already existing elements, as well as enabling you to engineer your own spells and minor magical trinkets. There is also an easy way to resolve any roleplaying aspects. Your warlock patron is a powerful servant or follower associated withyour god. For example, say you are a nature cleric of Ehlonna (GH). She has a planetar (Novalee) who serves her. Shaundakul (FR) could easily has an elder air elemental lord serving him. Likewise many gods may have angels, devils, powerful out planar creatures, beasts, elementals, etc. as servants or worshippers.

True, I'm currently playing a homebrew class called Sage, which is an INT based full caster, but I'm playing it as a gish. The character has max int, but isn't very bright. The way I justify it is she is very good at learning and retaining new information, but that doesn't mean that she's well learned.

So I have a Trickery Cleric who's getting a level of Sorcerer shoved into him to help him muddle his way through some save-the-world plot... we haven't gotten the full details yet. His god used fate and circumstance to get him onto a long-abandoned island, where a dormant demigoddess had woken up and sought to send him on a quest, infusing him with additional magical properties in the process. Chuck "Two-Gods" Tyndale, everyone. 😂

"Things that are on your character sheet don't need to be justified in game." This is all I needed to hear. I'm exaggerating, but it's a good reminder that I don't have to go up to every character and say, "Hi! I'm [name], and I'm a bard." My character might not exactly call or even consider themselves the class (or whatever) I wrote down on my character sheet. They can be more dynamic and nuanced than a naming system that helps define their mechanics in a game.

A warlock that thinks he's a cleric because his deity is a trickster deity and wanted some fun he's never tried before

The idea I’m running with, and I can’t take credit, is my ClerLock is the son of a Warlock and Cleric/Paladin, and the Deity and Patron are fighting over who gets the soul/body. All credit for this idea is Tom Fawkes.

Cleric and Warlock Cleric God be something good Warlock Patron be something evil (Make sure the 2 hate one another) Have your character be a changeling with split personality and flip a coin every long rest to see which you are that day and have them either despise the other personality or have no idea they exist Have fun with this idea, tweak as needed

This also kinda works for warlock/paladins aswell because you could be a warlock have sworn a oath infront of your patron.

I go even further than this. My players were very confused when they found out my clerics were mostly just regular priests and only specific people can perform miracles. And no one refers to them in game as their classes

This is how I would justify warlock/cleric build. You are thr middle man/women between 2 powerful deities, the 2 deities at 1 point loved each other but are now in a very hot divorce and your job is to basically be the lawyer (finding dirt on both sides, trying to find a middle ground, etc) of these 2 deities and in return you get there powers.

The cleric and the warlock gods/patrons are your celestial parents going through a cosmic divorce and while they still love you, and it's not your fault, they just can't live on the same plane anymore. Their hope is that you'll have a favorite by the time you're famous.
