One of the reasons why Cyrodiil felt so bland in Oblivion was because Bethesda didn’t have a dedicated concept artist. Kirkbride sort of filled that role in Morrowind, his sketches are amazing. It was only during Shirvering Isles that Adam Adamowicz joined the team and my god, that guy was a MACHINE! One of the best concept artists ever, you can see how he gave the following games a very unique look.

I feel like they should've made Oblivion in High Rock, at least then, the more medieval aesthetic could've stayed the same there and they could've saved Cyrodiil for a much later game where we get to see a more Mediterranean/Greco-Roman Cyrodiil (the one described in previous lore before the release of Oblivion).
@exilestudios95463 жыл бұрын
Ah but did you know that in Morrowind there are 2 books that describe the province of cyrodiil one describes it as the very roman inspired Mediterranean style nation we all expected but there is another that describes it as having lush rolling hills like england. Both books contradict each other by design as this gives Bethesda an easy out should they ever feel the need to change lore they can just use the unreliable narrator trope. They do this a lot in fact if you look at any in universe lore in a given game be it in book form it told to you by a character odds are you will find another source in that game that contradicts it on some way. Its a lazy writing trope that most writers claim give a world a sense of realism but usually means they couldn't settle down on an idea and so just said fuck it and did both.
@Thelastromanemporer3 жыл бұрын
@@exilestudios9546 Yeah, but it still seemed to emphasize heavily on the notion of a Mediterranean province as opposed to one more like Western France or Britain (which is obviously what we get with the Bretons in Highrock from TES II: Daggerfall). My last name (Ashford) is even a farm that you can go to in TES II. Each individual province in the Elder Scrolls Series is unique in its own way and is either based off of a certain landscape with peoples based off of a multitude of cultures from our world. So it would be out of character for Bethesda to make a landscape similar to that of previous games. That being said however, I don't expect 100% consistency and I understand why the change was made during the time. Long story short, all I'm saying is that it would be pretty damn cool to see this version of Cyrodill.
@SonofSethoitae3 жыл бұрын
The sort of Medieval thing would have made sense in the Colovian west, where Nordic culture is more prominent, but Oblivion just didn't do anything with the Colovian/Nibenese divide
@basedbattledroid35072 жыл бұрын
Would've liked to see more diversity in the Imperial people of Cyrodiil, there isn't much to set the Colovians and Nibenese apart except for their names, and only a handful Imperials look like brown Mediterranean Europeans while the majority of them just look like white Europeans, if it wasn't for the different voices and heights they'd be indistinguishable from Nords and Bretons. Plus it would've been cool to see some Asian-looking Imperials because of the Akaviri potentate and the intermarriages between Akaviri and Early Nedes/Cyrods and how it further builds upon Cyrodiil being the diverse melting pot of Tamriel, they should at least be somewhere throughout the cities, considering how the Blades try to stick so rigidly to Akaviri architecture and aesthetics.

10:49 Ok, so I have an answer to this. They're necropolises. We see this IRL with many ancient cities. When a city is abandoned and not rebuilt, almost nothing remains of the above-ground structures, while the underground necropolises often survive mostly intact. This is because above-ground structures are exposed to weather, looting, and natural decay. And also because most ancient buildings were made of wood and clay, not solid stone. Even when stone structures were present, people often tore them down to reuse the stone in new buildings. This is what famously happened to many Roman ruins during the middle ages. This is also why Saarthal in Skyrim is just a giant crypt, because all that remains of the ancient city is the underground necropolis, while the above-ground city has long since been destroyed and torn down. And conversely this is also why Dwemer ruins are full of living spaces with bedrooms, kitchens, etc. Because the Dwemer built entirely underground, so their cities were protected from the weather and from extensive looting.

As a former founding member of the Province: Cyrodiil Team, I recall I'm probably the one that came up with the idea for the alchemist with the "Dwemer Greenhouse". My original idea involved him using a miniaturized version of the Weather Machine from Tribunal to simulate environments from various regions of Tamriel with the goal of creating the ultimate alchemical garden. The idea would be to somehow integrate other Project Tamriel mods in a mega-quest to gather ingredients across Tamriel to add to his garden. Probably a bit too ambitious (and tricky to implement dependency-wise) so it's just as well they scaled it down. I'm also responsible for designing the Province: Cyrodiil logo which is something I'm particularly proud of.

it's interesting what lore they're running with, too. a tropical climate is going to be used for mainland cyrodiil too, because they're following the lore as of morrowind, not in oblivion, so cyrodiil is gonna be a jungle, not a generic fantasy setting. they're making all of the provinces of tamriel the way they were imagined back then, irrespective of how they developed in later games, which i think is extremely cool

Oblivion was a good game but its depiction of Cyrodiil _really_ gives off the vibe of the writers not being confident enough in their own lore and worldbuilding and thinking they had to make a generic fantasy in order to sell copies. I know ESO basically handwaved the Ayleid thing by saying that most of the ruins were never actually settlements but more like stargates for the ayleids magic subspace travel system
@JRexRegis10 ай бұрын
Tbh I'm of two minds. On one hand, a functional ayleid ruin would be incredible, but on the other hand, I think they should lean into the necropolis idea. Walls of skulls, catacombs with skeletons posed as art, etc. The Ayleid were freaky daedra worshippers, so their burial culture should reflect this. For example, something I've been working with in various fanfiction works was the idea of a necrotic family history. Every family has a tomb, or poorer ones a place in a public tomb, where the skeletons of their ancestors are displayed in a position which most reflected their life. So a carpenter would be posed with a saw made of bone, a warrior with a spear and shield, both also made of bone. The bones used for props and such are taken from their enemies. Every crypt should feel like a museum or a history lesson.
@minerman6010121 күн бұрын
@@JRexRegis I made the interior for Garlas Malatar and it's a bit of both. Just played this. Pretty decent mod. Looks like you missed the coolest place - a half-submerged ruin that's about 5 minutes of water walking southeast of the island. It's barely visible in the distance with Open MW's Distant Terrain pushed to the max.

19:07 nah, khajiit furstocks vary so much so theres always a form of khajiit for different jobs eg a suthay with digigrade legs is better at climbing while the more humanoid ohmes are better at cooking since they arnt shedding fur, senche are great at carrying things ect, the khajiit take pride in their species variety and their economy and society depend heavily on it, prejudice against a certain furstock would fuck that up severely, besides khajiit preach a pretty 'hippie' message of freedom and self expression, i guess being brutally oppressed by every other colonial ass civilization on nirn makes you alot more accepting
