Thanks Mike, I’m maybe a tiny bit excited 😂. I’m sure AWI will come, though I think they might move away from Black Powder for the next one, they will all be smaller after this one though, so who knows.
@packersfanforlife79033 жыл бұрын
I feel the AWI would be a lot different as to truely capture the AWI they'd have to do it for maybe Long Island or Brandywine as most battles in the AWI were small engagement compared to the ACW and Napoleonics! Not to mention all the different jackets/uniforms the Continentals had aswell. The uniforms changed so quickly in that War that they would have to focus it on one battle alone and not a full Campaign/War. As great as these are for me to get the true AWI I would have to stick with 10mm Pendraken.
@miketike32463 жыл бұрын
@@packersfanforlife7903 That's a really good point you make, I had not thought of that. I think you may be right about Pendraken 10mm being better suited for AWI.

@@miketike3246 believe me it would be awesome but I think it would be too hard to do justice in these sort of boxes. Plus the price of them, people would be forking out hundreds. Most Pennsylvania regiments had hunting shirts, each year from 1775 to 1777 the Continental line changed, then with the 1779 regulations it would just be hard to replicate within these box sets without multiple editions or add ons. Even the British Uniforms changed during the War, especially that in the way of the light infantry. It would be possible but it would have to be stream lined into one certain period within the War for it to work for me.

This release caught me by surprise too as I wasn’t expecting separate starters. I think I’ll go down the British Starter box route (as a friend wants the French) and paint that and then do the French. The ACW waves came in quite quickly so skirmish rifles, Prussians and horse artillery limbers might all be available by June? Once I’ve got ahead on the painting and have a couple of scenarios played I’ll get the buildings. My plan is to have it all over the next two years or so but probably not from day one.

I think that’s a solid plan, I won’t be grabbing it all at the start, with ACW it felt reasonable to have it all, as most was generic as well. As a beginner at Black Powder, would you recommend the 28mm scale or the Epic scale? I am interested in the age and would like to begin with it
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Essentially the game is the same regardless of the scale, both have their benefits, and in many ways I’d just go with what appeals more visually. Black Powder is designed as a Divisional level game (though this can be adjusted), but if you’d like to field a full Division of 2-3 Brigades, maybe 10-15 Battalions/regiments, then unless you have a huge gaming space 28mm becomes hard. The smaller scale makes this a lot easier, you can get a decent sized game on a 6x4, if you can stretch to an 8x4 or larger even better. But returning to what I started with, go with what visually appeals the most, and what you’d prefer to paint, a with either scale you’re going to be painting a lot.

I am an avid miniature painter and enjo painting different sorts of units from fantasy and sci-fi to historical and modern military. It has been literally a couple of decades since I have messed around with any military wargaming. Do you have a suggestion for an experienced painter and gamer looking to re-enter historical wargaming? I do not have a particular preference on time as long as it is pre WW2. Thank you for the great video!
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. I’ve only recently returned to Historical gaming myself, it was Warlord Games Black Powder that brought me back partly, but mostly interest in particular periods of history. My advice would be to firstly pick your absolute favourite period of history, or the period that excites you most to wargame. The find the rules to achieve that, think about what you most like in a wargame, is it a tight set of rules with points, something that’s complex and built around historical accuracy, or something that’s more of a sandbox designed for fun casual play in and around your chosen period? I love lots different historical periods, but my absolute favourites are Napoleonic and ACW, I love Black Powder as it’s simple and easy to play, doesn’t require too much rules reference during game, can do a decent job of giving the feel for the period. I like the look of mass armies on the table in these periods, so Epic Scale is perfect for that, and I like the idea of recreating historical actions, and a fund relaxed narrative form of gaming. Go with what interests you most.

I’ve never played napoleonics, even though I was interested. This is definitely the way to get into it. Not having played, I have no idea how these army starters will work out on the table. What size of a game would the army set get?
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Those £90 (adjust for your country) are essentially a whole army in a box. If we only take the unit frontages of the 10 regular line battalions into account, in one thin line they’d cover the width of an 8x4 table. Of course there are Rifles as well you’re easily talking an Infantry Division made up of 2 large or 3 Brigades. You’ve then got 5 cavalry units and artillery on top. It’s very similar for the French. It really all depends on your gaming space, but that’s a really good start, once the additional troops come out like Highlanders/Old Guard you have a very nice sized Division, and not far off maybe making it two.

This looks like a great format to get into. My initial thought was there is no pocket money level 'all in one' sets. - Having smaller boxes ( less models) at say £10 each side or a £25 all in battle set would enable more players to 'dip their toe' with this format, play smaller mini battles and also get both sides. I know this detracts from the 'Epic' tag but not everyone has £180 to get into a game system. At 15/16mm I can't believe the quality of the painting on these example sets! They are fantastic, you can even see the individual lacing on jackets, brilliant. These will be around for some time I think and building up your army(ies) can be done over time ....after finishing the painting of your previous bundle. lol Really looking forward to getting these.

Remember it’s only the initial release, I’m convinced we will see Highlanders, Old Guard and some kind of Skirmishing light troops for the British in later waves. I’m not sure what the plan is with the Riflemen in line and in every box, I feel they might be meant to be painted as something else as well. I like the French brigade boxes, seems a good balance. Cavalry could be a pain, but with plastic sprues there may be the option of buying them in their own. Warlord do it with other ranges, and there’s a few third parties that do as well, so might be able to solve (or partially solve those issues).

Nice to see a large amount released at the beginning, but it has confirmed that this isn't for me. I think I will wait for the rumoured ECW one or invest in an ACW one - I like the idea of uniforms and units which can fight across a whole war (admittedly, with a bit of a squint) and a starter set which allows you to field both armies, rather than these which will be limited to 100 days if you are British. Whereas the ACW hats were easily customisable, or at 13.5 forgivable in their variation, there is no easy way to edit a line of belgic into stovepipe. With the ACW set you can use those figures with slight adaptions for Manassas, Shiloh, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg etc etc. These I personally would find the British Belgic sculpts off-putting for Vimeiro, Corunna, Talavera, Albuera, Salamanca, Vitoria etc - it just limits me to Quatra Bras, Waterloo. It was adopted in 1812 but largely only gradually seeded in from then onwards (recruitment drafts amidst old stock of stovepipes) and the army was not fully Belgic-ed until after the Peninsula campaign was over. For others I am sure it will be wonderful - best of luck with others and their collections though - for thems as fancy it a haul this size in plastic must be like mana from heaven!
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Some really good observations there, the ACW set was more flexible, as would a ECW one (I’m sure it will come, hopefully next). You’re right about the focus on 100 days, it does limit to some extent (but know why they did it). I’ve been looking into the Belgic Shako introduction since the video, and have had a few replies on here as well. Mostly the same, but a little conflicting. I’m hoping I can get away with a 1813 Peninsula themed army with maybe a few conversions (need to see what I can do with a knife on these like with ACW) and paint job. They’re so small, paint job will do most of the work.

British to french is great but Waterloo was a mixture of armies vs the french. The British 'side' was a mixture of a lot of other 'kingdoms'. Will there be a boxset or conversion page to represent the other nations?. The other army ( prussians) wouldn't be out for a while, so what about the other nations that was there???
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
There’s a video out just yesterday from Warlord Games that answers most of those questions I think, better than I could in text anyway. But you’re on the right track, ‘painting conversions’ for Dutch/Belgians etc using the plastics from the release. More releases announced in terms of Highlanders, Rifles Skirmishing, Old Guard, Middle Guard and more. Prussians coming too, I think 11 sprues form part of the initial first two/three waves, that’s a lot of financial investment in plastic tooling, this a huge release in those terms, and they just can’t do it all at once. The good news is the pre-orders have done very well, which means more nations become more likely in the future.

If I just get the one sprue, I’ll probably paint it as it is for now, though I’ll likely go for white trousers and say it’s a late Peninsula battalion with new Belgic Shakos issued. Sadly my channel is not quite big enough yet to get review stock or early access, so I may have to jealously watch as others get to play around first 😆

Most British regiments had the “belgic” in April 1813 ( including light infantry and rifles) all regiments were expected to have them by 1814. Col. Andrew Barnard of the 1/95th (Rifles) at St. Simon, April 1, 1813, to Alexander Cameron, and says, " I have had caps enough in store to help the appearance of the 1st Batt. as it used to be but the 2nd and 3rd sport bang ups as the soldiers of the 52nd who were the first in the Division that put them on have christened them.."

@@MiniatureRealms All British line regiments wore the Belgic shako in the Waterloo campaign, with the exception of the 28th Foot, North Gloucestershire regiment, which retained the stovepipe.

Thank you @peezbeuponyou. I’ve been researching more the other way, I know the Belgic was introduced in March 1812, but also that it wasn’t wholesale in one go, so looking at the viability of doing a late Peninsula force with this release.

Buying multiple British brigade boxes isn’t good value, unless you want half a dozen units of the 95th rifles?
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Yep it seems like there’s going to be a few spare Riflemen around. 😬 I can still only suspect they have a secondary plan for them, but we might have to wait for an explanation on why there’s ranked up Riflemen and not skirmishing light company like the French Brigade has. They can obviously be used as 60th, KGL Rifles, Hanoverian Jaegers I suppose, but that’s still I high number of Rifle troops to squeeze in a game. I can see them painted red by many 😂

I like it very much but well wait ontell they sort out the 95th line and make them into skirmish, Like they done to the french, Very odd they didnt do this. Doing them as portuguese sound good tho.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
Yep it’s a head scratcher for me, the only thing I can think of is that did they end up fighting in line for a short period somewhere during the 100 days? 🤷♂️ I think we will see them skirmishing as a separate release, there might even be a ‘Light Division’ box. I think the ‘template’ of the French Brigade box/sprue is better though. I’ll be trying to use mine up as Portuguese, KGL, 60th, Jaegers etc
@crupt73013 жыл бұрын
It looks amazing but I am dissatisfied with their being no full battle starter set. I wanted both sides in the starter set. I don't know what I will do. I really don't wanna buy the boxes individually and as a teen I can't ask for both the British and French starter sets and I have nobody to play with who is willing to buy minis.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
I’m really surprised by this myself, I really thought that ‘Epic Battles’ was at core based around the ‘Battle in a box’ idea. It’s not ideal, but I’d probably suggest looking at 3rd party retailer discounts, maybe grab one stater and slowly add the opposing side, or just buy the brigade boxes from similar places and go slowly. Definitely not as good value though.

Disappointing ! Rifles in line? They didn’t March, they carried rifles at the trail, so times even running. Their March with rifles at the trail was carried out on the flanks or the army so that they could throw out a skirmish line immediately to protect the army. Each battalion had a light company of 60 to 100 men if they were up to strength. However I’ll take a look. The brigadiers look interesting and will fit in with a 10mm army perhaps as they will be on a separate base away from other mounted figures. Infantry, it depends on base size.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
The Riles are a bit of a head scratcher. I’m not sure they’re marching in the sculpt, it’s a more mixed line than the regular infantry, but I’m surprised they’re not in Skirmisher formation like the Voltigeurs are in the French set - I have a feeling we’re going to see skirmishing rifles and light company in later waves, I think they’ve done the rifles like that for a reason.

That’s fair enough, at this scale I’m pretty sure some of the British plastics might be able to painted as allies, but that won’t be for everyone. I think we will see a lot more in later waves.

@@MiniatureRealms If the jacket lace is not on the British line and has to be painted on(hard to tell by the images) then at that scale you could easily paint them as Dutch yes.
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
I think at this scale I might be happy with that. It won’t be for everyone, and that’s fair enough, but these strips do some of the work like a 6mm or 10mm sculpt for me, but with the detail of a 15. I’m comfortable with a little bit of individual inaccuracy for an overall effect, if I want better accuracy in the future I’ll grab so high end 15s or 18s, or even 28s.
@stevenlawther47503 жыл бұрын
I dont think it is anywhere near as good as the ACW stuff, think I will be sticking to my 18mm stuff. They sort of remind me of Christmas toy soldiers the British stuff anyway, but I guess its ok for someone getting into the period for the first time :)

I think it might be the clean paint job, but I can see where you’re coming from. The French look far more characterful, and the Rifles look good in looser order as well. I’m a fan of it all though really 🤣
@rickybell21903 жыл бұрын
The footprint for games would be ridiculous going by the width of each unit. The amount of rifles is ridiculously overkill. Then again it's for black powder the non realistic Napoleonic gaming ever to grace a 6 x 4 table.

Sounds like it’s not for you then, luckily there’s plenty of other games out there.

Looks too generic so far. It will be interesting to see how they manage the variety of units that made up the allied units. Nassau, Dutch, Brunswick, Prussians, Scots. I'm hoping this will be inThe pipeline
@MiniatureRealms3 жыл бұрын
I think we will see quite a bit in future waves, not sure where the line between new sculpts and painting existing ones differently might be yet, it’s hard to tell. For example they could bring out Hanoverians based on the British Infantry, with just the heads re-sculpted like the 28mm set, or they might just leave it for us to ‘make do’. I guess they will have made a guess at return on investment for plastics tooling, so some things we may not see. 🤞
