I just joined the Mercs earlier this month and I have to say this video is great! I feel like I am in school learning except I am learning a bunch of things that I want to learn. Thank you so much!

Very nice and straight forward tutorial. Will come in handy this weekend!

I used an old pepper grinder and a stick or selfmade hardwood charcoal. Gives a high grit content. So when it came to brushing in it did some extra weathering randomly.

NICE Video! Helps me a lot as I am going to build my own armor and this weathering method is just awesome!

The vasceline tactic works amazing and is the cheapest way. I swear by it and reads according to the pressure of your paint brush.

Could you do a more advanced version of this showing how to paint when making certain designs or patterns on your armor instead of the top layer being just one color across the whole piece?
@MandalorianMercsCC7 жыл бұрын
Wes Bugg honestly, patterns/designs are easier than layered weathering. All you gotta do is print out the design you want, cut it out with an xacto knife, then tape the cut-out over the area you want to paint the design. bam, instant stencil. :)

will do, thanks!

I feel so late to the game watching this, adding to four year old comments! But this was great! Quick question though: would you recommend the same charcoal treatment on a different color armor, like tan? Would you go for a different color chalk or stick with charcoal?
@MandalorianMercsCC3 жыл бұрын
The black artist chalk method, or charcoal dust method works with any light to medium color, so tan should be fine.

This is very helpful! Can you use a gloss as the top coat?

Yes, if you're going for a new look.

As a miniature painter, I have a fair bit of experience with certain weathering techniques. Is there anything about a drybrush weathering, or a wash, that would disqualify my costume from membership, or is it more about going with what you're comfortable with?
@MandalorianMercsCC4 жыл бұрын
It's mainly about using techniques you're comfortable with.

Love this tutorial, using this in the future. Minor gripe: shaking the paint cans was a bit jarring lol

Great video, thank you. If i make masking fluid, how much water to how much liquid latex?
@MandalorianMercsCC8 жыл бұрын
+David Cook I just eyeball it. You want the masking mixture to be about 2-3 times thicker than water.
@Callmecook2498 жыл бұрын
+Mandalorian Mercs ok so roughly a 3-1 mix. Simple enough. I bought some masking fluid and i cant believe how pricey it is. I can buy 4 times the amount of liquid latex for less than the fluid. But again great vid, got a bunch of ideas from it.

If you use toothpaste; should be a specific kind of toothpaste? Like the 'pin hole repair' trick in drywall, the gel toothpastes don't work. It's gotta be the plain baking soda toothpastes.
@ivorypoet69723 жыл бұрын
Instead of the masking fluid, could a person use caulking?
@MandalorianMercsCC3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't. If you're going to go that route, use petroleum jelly or toothpaste.
@barnowl0120018 жыл бұрын
I cannot find that masking fluid in Walmart or Meijer stores ..I'm only seeing this on amazon for $11.00 or more
@MandalorianMercsCC8 жыл бұрын
you can also use toothpaste or watered down latex.
@barnowl0120018 жыл бұрын
I was originally looking to find the liquid latex but none of the craft store or even Wal-Mart carry it
@barnowl0120018 жыл бұрын
But yeah I did go with the toothpaste

all the mandalorian paint videos ive seen, theres always a silver-metallic base coat. is this strictly for weathering/damage to expose the illusion of metal underneath? or does it add depth? Is it necessary to do if you dont plan on showing scratches on a certain peice of armor or should you do every peice on the set this way even if you're not showing damage/weathering?
@MandalorianMercsCC7 жыл бұрын
chris szablewski the metallic coat is mostly for depth of weathering. if your not weathering then there's no reason to lay down a metallic coat.

How would i weather my armor if I want my plates to be silver?
@MandalorianMercsCC4 жыл бұрын
Paint wash is your best bet.
@Valentina-uc2sr4 жыл бұрын
I think many people use a mixture of water and black acrylic which they paint over the silver and then immediately use a paper towel to brush it off. This will give it a more used and dirty look. Some then weather it more with some umbra or rust coloured paint at the edges or so.

Are there other ways to get the carbon dusting besides using artist chalk and matte clear finish?
@MandalorianMercsCC8 жыл бұрын
You could try using charcoal dust, and brushing that on. You still need to seal it on with a matte or gloss finish, otherwise it will rub off and get all over the place.

@MandalorianMercsCC7 жыл бұрын
Crazy Cosplay's it shouldn't be as long as it looks in-universe.

Yeah but the second layer has cut of parts and sticking them together that is what I am worried about.
