Warmoth Jazzmaster Build (What to do & what not to do) BareKnucklePickups/HipshotHardware

Following on from the unboxing video of my Warmoth Jazzmaster parts, here is a time-lapse of the assembly process myself and Johno went through putting this guitar together.
I made some errors ordering the body which were rectified thanks to some great advice from Stu @SMPGuitars

A suggestion for mounting the string ferrules, use a rubber hammer 🔨 and a small wooden block , works quite well

For every player builder always keep and and all your hardwood scrap, you will most likely need it later as you see. Amazing guitar the Jazzmaster Body has know become my favorite style, you cant beat the way it looks and is perfect playing with a strap.

I just started speccing out a Warmouth Jazzmaster build yesterday. Single bridge humbucker and volume but I'm gonna use the pickguard since it's my first wiring job. Also plan to have it routed out for HH and just hiding the neck pup rout until I decide to use or not later. Thanks for posting a look at what the process may be like!

Really tastefully done. A lot of times when I see Warmoth builds, they have all kinds of garish paint jobs, weird pick guards, gold hardware, Floyd Rose bridges... I appreciate the restraint here.

Love that wood combination! Wait, you can measure out the tape for the electronics cavity and put it on neatly instead of slapping 83 torn pieces all around the area? Huh. Learn something new everyday! Someone probably already commented but there are options on the site for both of the problems you had. There’s a hipshot fixed bridge option and select the humbuckers-wood mount option for the pickups.

I only just found this video moments ago. So weird, you've built the Warmoth Jazzmaster in my mind's eye. Even the CBS Strat style headstock. Satiny oil finish, ash JM body with nice darker wood top like walnut or black limba. Roasted flame maple neck and board, black hardware with hardtail bridge, locking tuners, etc. etc. I just kept going from double humbucker to P90s. Never pulled the trigger though. Your video is a nice test run without the risk! Cheers. -r

man this is a weird coincidence... 2 years ago i was about to order basically exactly those parts in that wood configuration. even bkp and hipshot bridge, with the exception of a humbucker sized p90 in the neck. sadly back then i had some other money priorities, anyways great choice, looks fucking killer!

What base height did you go with for your bridge, the .125 or the .175? I'm doing a similar build here soon, and I'm planning to use the same bridge.

I was just about to ask the same question. I got the .125 Hipshot for my Warmoth Strat and my saddles are pretty much maxed out in terms of height. I’m assuming the .175 would have been the much better option

Aren't you supposed to check relief and action while the guitar is in playing position? Seems like doing the adjustment while the neck is on a rest would throw the measurement. Respect on the build. Looking to build one myself.

nice job - i LOVE those inners and outers ... did you do the magnet flip and reverse wire on one of the pickups so that the inners and outers are hum cancelling?

Excellent planning; the end result is quite excellent. One question though: I don't see a truss rod at the headstock; is this the "Vintage" option which has the adjustment at the heel?

Warmoth necks have the adjustment at the heel, but at the side of the heel.

The hipshot bridge should have covered the Warmoth mounting holes when you moved the bridge down?

congrats on a wonderful guitar and thanks for sharing this. i've been fantasizing about building my own warmoth AND i have been obsessed with the SMP guitars. seeing your finished product which is very close to what i have in mind for my own eventual build is great to see. sorry if i missed this in the video but is that a flamed maple neck or a roasted maple neck, or both?

Just rub Danish oil on there? No multiple coats, sanding? It looks great.

ValueOfNothing I did 6 coats in total on the body. Wiped off any excess after each application. No need for sanding.

I am planning a similar project with warmoth parts. Did you use a long or short shaft pot for your volume?

Question, how was the fret level on arrival? (IE how low could you get the action before buzz) I'm fine fixing up the edges but leveling a new guitar is making me anxious. (Still tuning my leveling ability)

Is it worth it to buy an unfinished body and paint it or is it better to buy a body that's already painted?? Planning to maybe 1 or 2 years later to build a white warmoth strat. Did you get the unfinished body because they didn't have that finish or is it better that way?? Also, great build man!! Looks really beautiful

Vicente Antunes thanks bud! I’d recommend getting Warmoth to finish the guitar rather than an other party. It’s purely down to the woods I chose as to why I didn’t choose a colour. Just prefer natural wood finish guitars.

You can do that. I haven't. I just did the 3 coats of Danish oil.

Jeffery Bacus the neck was great out of the box. Fret are nicely finished, all we did was give them a polish and cut the nut to accommodate the thicker string gauge 11-52.

Warmth will do finishing, but choice of either satin or gloss poly only. If you want a nitrocellulose finish or some kind of oil finish, you can do it yourself or get a second party to do it. There are people and companies that specialize in it.

Christopher LaFreniere it wears off after a while. I’ve got a Warmoth Tele with the same danish oil finish, which is several years old and doesn’t smell anymore.

No, it's a custom spec that require you to send the bridge to them to get it routed. Even then the string holes don't completely align with the holes in the bridge, just enough that the strings can be fed through. It's not a big deal but kinda annoying considering the extra fee to use the hipshot.

And probably a better one. The stock jazzmaster bridge is terrible. Now, I do think having a length of string behind the bridge does something to the tone...a tune-o-matic type bridge instead of what he choose might get closer to the sound. I like the jazzmaster shape, HS pickup configuration, and a hardtail telecaster/strat type bridge. Nobody makes that guitar, so I'd build something like he did. The closest thing in existence to it is the squire HH JM....I'd just put a single in the neck and be done.

It's a tele deluxe with a jazzmaster shape and without the stupid wide range humbuckers that make it a pain to swap out and put anything new in. In other words, it's totally cool.

@@RickyParker666 I hear ya. I have a jazzmaster....I think 90% of the tone is the pickups. The "allure" to me is a combination of the shape and the tone. The trem has much less influence on the tone.. If you put a jazzmaster pickup on a strat or tele body....you'd probably be 90% there. I view the shape of the body as a plank of wood, you can put any bridge or pickup type on it that you want. It makes me want to punch people who say "that ain't no TELE" because someone puts a humbucker on it. who cares? Guitar traditionalists can be some of the most boring people on the planet. Enjoy your twang, tele fanatics. some of us want some other options. :)
