Judy was underrated as a dancer. Gene Kelly was an athletic dancer, very different from the Fred Astaire romantic type dancer. Judy picked up Kelly's choreography immediately and could match him step for step. She also had a great time doing it. I have to also give credit to the costume designer, Walter Plunkett, for Judy's dress in this sequence which flowed with her turns and contrasted with Kelly's close jeans and shirt.

everytime I watch Judy there is always something else another layer, something more to be seen or heard. if you watch another other performer being and doing a dance challenge, it is simply back and forth for a number of steps, then the two performers do steps together, then a big finale. Watch Judy before she and Gene dance the same steps together, she is staring at Gene so intently as if she is looking at the steps for the first time, and when she gets to the together part she knows the audience is so caught under her magic spell of they believe she is seeing and doing these steps for the first time, that we are totally unaware that she no longer looks directly at Gene to see what the steps are. Judy was so brilliant of an actress, she knew how to create, and build an audiences suspension of belief so everything she did was 100% bought and believed by the audience.

Great clip. The contrast in Judy Garland's appearance here versus her famous "Get Happy" clip is striking. During filming she had weight problems and other issues that really were burning her bridges in the industry. "Gat Happy" was filmed as an additional scene after the movie had wrapped up filming and she had been using the time to lose weight, get back in shape mentally and the difference was amazing. "Get Happy" probably saved her career at that point.
