The realism in this film is outstanding. You can feel the humidity along with the stress of impending danger. Gibson and Weaver are stunning. Hunt is unforgettable.

My mother left Indonesia with her parents (Chinese father, Dutch-Indonesian mother) for China in 1953, they had relatives that stayed in Indonesia. I knew very little of the country until I visited in 1995. It was quite a contrast as I was living in Italy at the time and flew in from Hongkong, I remember that on the day of departure our relative had to bribe customs officers at the airport so that he could accompany us to the plane. I am glad things are going well for the people despite the country having to go through a lot of trauma in history. In 1998 violent riots, thousands burnt to death, women brutalized, and so much bloodshed at a time not so long ago. If corruption and poverty were the root cause, I hope the country is on the right track now.

My father was Indonesian, born in 1940, who emigrated to Europe in the early 60-s. I remember watching this movie with him several times and although he generally liked the movie, I recall distinctly how uncomfortable he was at a few of the scenes, namely - the handicapped dwarf dance, the prostitutes swarming over the 2 characters and the poverty and sickness scenes in the harbor. Also, he was not very fond of how Sukarno was portrayed - for his generation, Sukarno was more of a hopeful figure who tried to elevate the country above outside dependence and bring meaningful reforms in just about everything. It was much less about political affiliation.

@dixjam225816 күн бұрын
@@anairenemartinez165 You will have to be more precise in your question, I don't understand what you mean. But I can tell you this now: why would anybody care about what some obsolete political figure like QE II had to say about anything, particularly issues outside the UK?
@berits.234616 күн бұрын
@dixjam2258 because, QE II obviously has more experience and a smarter mind than you will ever achieve, I'm sorry to say. And this is coming from someone who is not a monarchist at all.
@dixjam225816 күн бұрын
@ Smart has nothing to do with what is being discussed here, I am not a political figure, I am not in public office and I don't take decisions affecting millions of people. But for the sake of the argument, here is where I am definitely smarter than QE II: I am earning my livelihood in the private sector, using my skills and my knowledge. I had/have no inheritance, no hand-outs, no money from public funds and certainly no job handed to me unconditionally on a silver platter. Instead of trying to downplay people on the internet based on your perceived expectations about people you don't know, maybe you should get back to a rational debate about this movie and what I said.

Thank you for uploading! I watched this movie for the first time, because I really enjoyed the book. I think the antagonisms in the book were beautifully reinforced, and it is super interesting to see what was changed in comparison. I can't really tell, but I've noticed that many of the actors had filipino names, I wonder if my friends from Indonesia would notice it. But it's crazy how similar everything is to how it looked in my head! Normally I don't enjoy movies this old, but this one was great! I just think Sukiyaki would have been a great choice for music track during the credits, it was mentioned in the book as a reoccurring theme of Hotel Indonesia
