That dress was designed by Halston. He never got any credit for redesigning some of Liza's costumes after she said that she couldn't move in the original ones. He and Liza were best friends, so he stepped in and took care of it.

Watching this after seeing Amy Lennox's performance and it still holds up. Liza's Sally is contained, cynical, singing perfectly to cover her pain. Amy's is having a total breakdown, screaming, and missing notes. They're both valid, great versions.

I've also just watched both (before seeing your comment), and I agree - but if watch the brilliant intro of Lennox by Edie Redmaine, I think he poignantly describes how important these messages are for us today, and how much today is like the 1930's an exciting and scary time - all at the same time.

Any actors here, great tip I observed here. If you’re having trouble with delivering words that feel awkward to say, in this case “old chum”, associate an actionable gesture with it. “Old chum” is hard to sell when said in an American accent. Especially if you’re female. Adding a gesture can really cover that awkwardness and help you ride on top of the line rather than get sunken by it.

That glint of a tear at 2:01 shows just how distraught Sally really is, and how desperate she is to hold on to a world that's crumbling all around her. What a performance!

I saw a production of this last night and the Sally was phenomenal, sinking into the despair that she’s been through while demanding joy of herself for the song. I wish they kept the line “as for me, as for me, I made my mind up back in Chelsea: when I go, I’m going like Elsie.” in this.

Joel Grey was getting into his limo with friends and refused to sign my mothers cabaret record since she dropped her pen in the streets of new york city. We asked him if he or his friends had a pen on them and he abruptly shouted "NO" and then handed us the record back and laughed egotistically as he closed the door on us. We now can identify with actors when they say they never wished they had met some of their acting idols. Well we both feel the same way we wish we had never met Joel Grey.

One should never be cruel. I'm sorry that happened to you. I can see why some actors/famous people can be mean. As some fans can be inconsiderate. Once I saw a singer at a concert and waved to her, she waved back. My friend asked me who I waved at... I didn't want to tell but eventually I did and she ran over to the lady. My friend asks for a selfie which gets the attention of other fans. Next thing everyone wants a selfie. I felt so bad that the singer couldn't enjoy the concert. I apologized, she looked at me as if to say, "you didn't know. " it became so out of control that the MC of the event got on the mic and told people to leave her alone. Thankfully they did.

Modern productions seem to feel they have to hammer the audience with the pathos of this scene. This version did it perfectly. We know what she's feeling. She doesn't have to break down to show it.

Ja, es sagt alles. Trotzdem darf ein moderner Regisseur, eine Regisseurin ihre zeitgemäße Interpretation darbringen, da sie in sich viel Neues und Kreativität besitzt, nur stimmig muß es sein.

Yes nightclub performers don't bring their baggage on stage with them ....they escape their baggage on stage and enter a world of glamour and make believe. 'The show must go on'. That's the irony. Later versions such as Lennox's are very ill conceived.

I think it’s nice different versions have their own interpretations. This is a movie so it’s easier to show more subtle emotions in the eyes, but theatre productions have to be more expressive (verbally and physically) because you’re not sat right in front of their face

Liza’s performance makes me think of her mom, Judy Garland. Despite all her personal struggles, Garland always performed with a smile. The show must go on after all. That attitude was drilled into Garland during her years in vaudeville and as a cog in the studio machine. Sometimes singing is the only positive thing you have and you cling to it which I think was what Judy and Liza as well did.

Did you forget the part where the people at a party start a synchronised dance number to sing about how much they love fascism It’s a musical of course they are going to have her break down “on stage” because she breaks out of the performance and speaks to the audience Calling it poorly conceived is just revealing you don’t understand the medium

Mansplaining a relationship between two females, one mourning the death of the other...Amy Lennox's rendition was more poignant regarding the loss of a lover and the disdain for the men she has to pretend to be interested in entertaining just to make an indecent living... you're not the target audience...

Sounds like they were going somewhere and you were just more fans in their way. Then you felt so entitled you decided to be false hearted about the story and added false details. I only say this because this comment reads as almost the exact same as everyone else who makes these up. Maybe I'm wrong but you could have also misinterpreted the situation. People in the comments who met him seem to have a very different opinion.

To be quiet honest; I hate Liza’s Sally Bowles. Sure, she can sing- but it’s not Sally. Amy Lennox, Natasha Richardson, and a plethora of other actresses have showcased Sally perfectly, but Liza lacks it majorly.
