This Summer the American Saga begins. Horizon: An American Saga - Only in Theaters June 28 #Horizonamericansaga
Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true
cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won-and lost-through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.
Costner stars alongside an impressive ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, Ella Hunt, Tim Guinee, Danny Huston, Colin Cunningham, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Will Patton, Georgia MacPhail, Douglas Smith, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jamie Campbell Bower, Alejandro Edda, Wasé Winyan Chief, Michael Anganaro, Angus Macfadyen, Jon Beavers, Alex Nibley, Kathleen Quinlan, Etienne Kellici, Amos Jason Charging Cloud, Bodhi Okuma Linton, Gregory Cruz, James Russo, Jeff Fahey, David O’Hara, Chris Conner, Leroy M. Silva, Bernardo Velasco, Tom Everett, Glynn Turman, Giovanni Ribisi and more.
Costner returns to directing for the first time since his 2003 critically acclaimed hit “Open Range,” and revisits Civil War-era America, the setting for his 1990 blockbuster and directorial debut, “Dances with Wolves,” which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He produces alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, with Danny Peykoff, Robert Scannell, Armyan Bernstein, Charlie Lyons, Barry Berg and Rod Lake executive producing.
Costner is joined behind the camera by director of photography J. Michael Muro (“Billionaire Boys Club,” “Parker”), production designer Derek R. Hill (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “The Magnificent Seven”), editor Miklos Wright (“For All Mankind,” “Open Range”) and costume designer Lisa Lovaas (“Ambulance,” “Transformers: The Last Knight”). The music is by Oscar nominee John Debney (“The Passion of the Christ,” “The Greatest Showman”).
A New Line Cinema presentation of a Territory Pictures production, “Horizon: An American Saga” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The films will be released in theaters nationwide, the first on June 28, 2024, the second on August 16, 2024.

Kevin Costner has been the massive saga film guy for years, where he genuinely tries to take huge novel epic storytelling to the big screen in a way unique to him. The world wasn't really ready for his 2-3 hour enormous character building adventures back in the early 90's whether acting, producing or directing with Dances with Wolves, Open Range, JFK, Wyatt Earp, Waterworld, The Postman, a Yellowstone and now Horizon. Not everything he's done is perfect, but his love for telling big stories about big people and big events, usually while giving us huge sprawling landscapes is undeniable. I'm happy that the public interest has shifted from mainly 90 minute movies in the 80s and 90s to the common 2+ hour adventures we get today because an epic storyteller like Costner can barely stretch his legs in 90-120 minutes.

@@racerex340Dances with Wolves was highly celebrated and awarded though. Others have done it too (Titanic comes to mind). If it's done right, people are willing. Even today, it has to be done right because asking people to sit for a 3+ hour film is a big ask. While we have more attempts at it today as a whole vs back in the 90's. Very few filmmakers can actually pull it off. Average runtime for films today is still 90mins btw. We have more attempts at longer formats than decades of yonder sure. But lets not act like 3hr films is some new norm that everyone is down for. Oppenheimer for how great that film was, people constantly bemoaned about its runtime. Even End Game got panned a bit for it's runtime as well despite how successful it was. People still like the standard 90 runtime more. We just have more attempts at the longer runtime than before, not to be confused with actual reception since the very few exceptions to that do not make it the rule. I'm still excited for this though. Looks good so far.

He is courageous when it comes to getting his projects done. What he went through to make Water World, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves, and The Postman have already set the bar very high. In the late 80's, Kevin ran into difficulty securing the financing for Dances with Wolves and several movie studios rejected the project along the way. He was told then the Western genre was dead and the film too long. Not one to be deterred by the naysayers, he pushed forward to put it all together. The end result was a picture that won 7 Academy awards, grossed over $400 million worldwide (1990 dollars) and was named by critics as one of the best films of that year. As history shows, this is an actor/director who has the guts to forge his own path. Hats off to you, Mr. Costner, for taking another gamble with this latest Western. I for one hope this upcoming film will have a scene reminiscent of the buffalo hunt with the Lakota from Dances with Wolves (epic).

I have a feeling this is going to be THE best western ever made. Kevin Costner is SIXTY NINE YEARS OLD. I will never forget the night I watched 'Dances With Wolves' with my parents as a young teenager on a four channel tube display TV. We all sat there for three hours and never said a word even through the commercials. I took my young wife to a one off showing of the directors cut at the cinema and I had tears rolling down my face at the end scene. This is looking like another masterpiece from Kevin Costner.

I agree Any discussion of westerns has to include Dances With Wolves and Once Upon a Time in the West. I can't bring myself to read the sequel to Dances With Wolves because it delves deeply into the horrible things that happened to the Native Americans. Perhaps Costner will bring some of that into Horizon since he never filmed the sequel.

This is actually exciting for someone like me who was weaned on the classics - Hondo, The Searchers, How The West Was Won, Broken Arrow, Red River, Shane, The Ox-Bow Incident, True Grit, Jeremiah Johnson, and The Cowboys. Though made for television, Lonesome Dove is a classic in its own right. But there have been very few really good westerns since the John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda era. I can really count them on one hand - Silverado, Dances With Wolves, Tombstone, Open Range, and Broken Trail (also made for television by American Movie Classics). Westerns are by far my favorite purely American movie genre. So I'm definitely all in and grateful that Kevin Costner has seen fit to make this saga and hope it's a winner for him.

@@guyfawkes8384 Hmm, I'll keep an eye open for these problems. They may not matter to me if the story is really engaging. I do remember finding literally brand new clothing without a wrinkle in them being not realistic on so many TV series in the 1980s. But in the 1860s virtually everything was made of wool, denim not yet being invented IIRC, and cotton was used for the rest. I may be wrong about this but decent quality wool will hold its shape quite well for a fair while. So it may not be odd for the period. Costner is usually very careful in the details. In "Open Range" he made sure that all the glass used in that 1870s Western was of the wavy variety because perfectly flat and clear glass had not yet come into use. 🤠

This was an amazing movie that truly showed what it means to make a movie and what a show not tell with the action sequences as well as the actor is amazing. 10/10

This movie is on the same level as Dances with wolves and Wyatt Earp are. But I see a lot of makeup even on the man faces which is so awful. But it's 9/10.

too many characters sprawled without narratives, presenting characters emotions dealt so insensitively, stories change overly fast. felt like a collection of movie commercials

@@dango6266 Not at all. I'm utterly disgusted by the wokeness of Yellowstone, where all the Indians are oppressed victim saints. They aren't. There were good and bad people on both side. The series Longmire had well balanced writing.

@@tomigun5180 Good and bad on both sides.... HMM. Let's see, they welcomed the Pilgrims at Salem only to be later repaid with small pox. Then had to watch the lands that they had been on, that they laid claim to, be forcibly taken from them and they themselves relocated to that crappiest parts of this country. The "oppressed victim saints" were simply trying to defend what had been theirs for centuries. Imagine me coming to your house and saying it is now mine, how might you respond? The American Indians are the largest (in quantity) genocide victims (of several) in the history of our United States of America. Do not sugar coat it. Do not explain it away. Simply accept that our forefathers were murderous in their actions which were all committed in the name of expansion.... Do that and then we can talk about how to proceed...

This movie is an insult to native Americans. Come on you invade the indians land and still play the victim.

I went to see if during opening weekend. I was a bit confused at first, but it didn't take long to get into the flow. Doesn't dumb things down with exposition - you have to pay attention. About a third into the movie, I was hooked! It's like a Kurosawa movie, every single frame looks like a painting (if there was any CGI it was hard to spot). Looking forward to Chapter 2 in August!

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING. It's an experience to put you into life on the frontier in the 1860s. It's a vibe, not a single story. It's miles better than the Ballad of Buster Scruggs
