Bertrand Chamayou - Ravel album: smarturl.it/chamayou-ravel
“Recording Ravel is not just a return to my roots, but also a natural stage in my development … my style of playing and the way I imagine sound can be largely attributed to Ravel.” Bertrand Chamayou follows his Erato debut - a Schubert programme described by The Sunday Times as an “affecting, beautifully performed disc” - with a double album devoted to the complete solo piano music of the French composer.

What I like the most about his playing is that he is so humbly letting himself be with the music rather than exagarating or showing off. Nothing gets too personal. It is universal from beginning to end, every second. To be such a great talent and so modest at the same time must require another talent, which I can not even name.

I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson said that once, artists were servants. Although mastery of one’s craft is an achievement, music is to serve people. Matisse said he hoped his paintings would be like a good armchair to the soul who looks at it. The greatest artists don’t forget this.

Thank you. I hate it when a pianist feels the need to display facial contortions and throw their head back in ecstasy. Use your God given talent to play the music to the best of your ability and stop worrying about the camera angle.

I'd say what makes a perfect pianist isn't one that does what they think is the 'perfect performance', but one that hears and understands everything they do wrong and know how to make it right. I am pretty proud that I am at least able to hear what I'm doing wrong when I play. The only problem is I don't know how to fix it :/

I think this is not necessarily, as so often enunciated, a "Pavane for a Dead Princess," and as such a funereal piece. It would be better served if translated "Pavane for a Princess from a Far-away Time." Ravel has imbued this piece with a reflectivity that does indeed evoke a person and a time very much in the past, but Ravel also gives a gentle and very active life to the person whom he is commemorating. This is a very good performance, with a subtle touch and very expressive style.
