In 1979 off of Carysfort reef near key largo myself and 2 friends lost our motor early in the morning and got caught in a very bad winter storm. We managed to swim the boat as we were pushed out to sea to a channel marker 8 miles off shore. We spent 2 days and nights tied to the buoy. The boat was a 1970 13’ Boston whaler. The first night 7 people lost their lives from 3 different boats caught in the storm. Our boat had capsized and righted itself so many times the first 36 hours we thought the lines would break or the cleats would give way. We knew that without the boat we would never be spotted from the air. One of my buddies father was a pilot based at homestead Air Force base. He took a trainer/ SAR aircraft up and was actually the one who found us. The coast sent a helicopter out and picked us up and took us to the hospital on the Air Force base. We were treated for hypothermia and yes frostbite. The first might out the air temp was 29 deg f. Had the boat been anything other than a whaler. I wouldn’t be typing this.

You can never have too many first responders, especially with a boat that's sinking. You can always send people away as soon as you realize that there's more than enough people there. It's often too late to call for backup as soon as you realize that there aren't enough. Better safe than sorry.

True, but the boat wasn't sinking and no body was in peril. This information should have been relayed through the 911-system so that only the appropriate amount and type of response could be coordinated. In this case, a simple 'tow-boat' would have been sufficient, saving both manpower and cost from using first-responder resources that might have been needed elsewhere at that time.

There's nothing in the video to indicate that the boat was sinking - it just got a little water splashed in it. Boston Whalers are basically Igloo coolers sheathed in fiberglass. If you cut them up into six pieces, all six pieces would float. I suppose if you had a small enough piece of that boat that was tied to the transom, the engine would sink that piece. Short of that, it's just physics - yes, its unsinkable.

I would never say that too many responders are reacting to a call. It may show a lack of coordination between them to inform the others once they arrived at the scene and have it under control. Altough it may look a bit much, but the helicopter may be the only way to ensure that there isnt another issue around and they "accidentially" went to the wrong guys. When they receive the call there is usually only a rough position given and you have to make sure you covered everything. So, yes, the heli made sense, some of the boats arriving late should have been informed that someone already arrived on the scene and they may return to patrol.
@rustyjohnson95585 ай бұрын
You are using a lot more abstract reasoning skills than many of these commenters. Real life is full of surprises. You may come across another boater in distress while on the way to the one called about and mistakenly think it is the only one. Your rescue boat, or another one, may become disabled en route or on scene. Rescue crew may become injured. In 25 years as a first responder, have seen it turn to crap in every conceivable way.

@@rustyjohnson9558 Thx for your answer. It may be due to language issues, maybe not. I agree, a call is "hot" as long as help is not there. But if they have arrived and can actually help, the others should be aware on that and have the ability to switch priorities. When working on the Mississippi river at Memphis Tn,we helped a pleasure boat that had run out of fuel & almost got run over by passing towboats & barges because they couldn't maneuver out of the way. As we towed them back to another towboat to get some gasoline(we had none on my towboat),I was asking the guy questions & trying not to make him look like an idiot in front of his hot girlfriend. However,as I asked "How much fuel does this hold?" & How much did you have onboard when you left the ramp this morning?" he didn't know either answer which seriously irritated the woman. If you've never seen an angry Asian woman,you want to hold off on that.The looks she was sending his way would have melted titanium. The funny part of the story is when we'd gotten to the towboat that was picking up empty barges from our fleet & all hands except one guy had turned out because they'd heard there was a woman in a bikini on the ski boat. That towboat's Captain even came up on the radio on our fleet's channel saying "I been on the river 30 years & I ain't NEVER seen it take 9 guys to pass two 5 gallon gas cans to another boat!" The woman heard that remark & immediately put her coverup on which disappointed the guys on the towboat.I probably should have turned down the volume on my walkie talkie before that. They guy who didn't see the show? A couple weeks later,that towboat was back to deliver more loaded rock barges & to pick up the empties & as I worked with their crew,I was relating the story to the guys who hadn't been riding that boat at the time. One guy started swearing & I asked him why. He told me "They told me(his previous crewmates who'd gone home at the end of their 30 day hitch leaving him to finish his time)that there was a hot chick on a ski boat & that I should have gotten up to see her!" All I could say was "Yes,you should have."

I have owned several small Whalers. First was a 13 footer. Then 12 years later, a 17 Montauk. Had that for 30 years. The best ever. For this situation, I have a couple of comments. I have been through Haulover on a number of occasions in these small boats. You need to know the currents, and tides, etc. Generally, for small boats, it is best to stay close to the north side of the inlet. But you should always have a marine radio for cases like this. And always more than enough life presevers, boat cushions, etc. I also always had more than one fuel tank. And the engiine serviced regularly. Also, where is this guys' anchor? He could have put that out and stopped the boat from going further out to sea and it would have given the boat some stability. Anyway, I hope that he learned something from this.
