All I can say is that kayaks are hard to see. They are silent. They need to be the ones to get out of the way. The water has its own rules. Getting into a kayak on open waters is a super dangerous thing even if you don't realize that danger. Keep them in rivers and lakes because to a 50' vessel you don't even exist.

Exactly, half of the people showing off their quads for the cameras, the other half are drunk. Last place I'd try to paddle. That doesn't absolve the boat captain from his reckless disregard though. I made the mistake of trying to cross the main body of lake Minnetonka in a kayak and it felt like a game of frogger with drunk semi drivers. Sometimes you have a close call like this that reiterates how small you are.

It's nothing like it. Skate boarding on GCP is illegal. The waves weren't getting him but some a-hole wake was, He has better control over that kayak than the person does of the boat. Look how long it took for the person to react after the passenger pointed out the kayak. The guy driving is more worried about chatting up the girls and he wasn't even watching. He was also sitting down and can't see over bow because of it. He has no business behind the wheel

@@brinkee7674 That all may be true, but the odds of getting hit by a boater in that canal on that day, While kayaking, are similar to a skateboarder getting run over while skateboarding on a busy highway, regardless of the legality. I’m not disagreeing with your disposition. Most boaters lack the coordination and or experience to ensure safety, which is why I prefer to head out during the week, and not weekends. As a boater, I’ve had many close calls, with other boaters who were preoccupied with something other than the water in front of them.

As a kayaker, this scenario can be quite possible when large boats, small boats and kayaks, or jet skis use the same waterway. The kayaker had a red flag and when I see boats come at me at full speed, I always take my paddle and wave it in a vertical stance to be seen. This situation is no different than people distracted texting, fiddling with a radio, or talking to someone on the phone in a car. I believe that the big boat's captain was distracted either by the other bigger boats, sea conditions, or his passengers and didn't see or lost track of the small kayak in front of him. I believe that the kayaker's boat probably sustained damage from hitting the cement wall and I believe that it would be the big boat's responsibility to ensure that the kayaker is alright and he should pay for any damages to the kayaker's boat. I would personally avoid busy traffic areas with large motorboats cruising through rough waters. If I was kayaking, I would move to a place where there is little or no traffic and enjoy the isolation, freedom, and safety. That's my opinion.

While unenforced, the same exists in the US. With that being said, Florida’s east coast inlets are notoriously brutal. You have to do whatever it takes to keep your boat floating which is just one of the many reasons why YOU SHOULD NEVER KAYAK IN THEM.

lots of great boats in this video. If I had my pick, I’d choose whatever those cops were using. Those guys always seem to get ahold of the very best equipment. It’s amazing what tax money can do😂

Most of the vessels are custom-made and built to handle rough seas with proper ballast. They are not the grossly overpriced plastic urinals mass produced by these supposed great companies like Contender, Grady White, Pursuit. It is a status thing amongst the sporties. The 110 ×26 beam×13 ft draft light steel longliner I run is powered by 2 12 cylinder diesels, 3 -10 kw generators, 22,000 gallon fuel capacity walk-in refrigerator and freezer 2 10 ton a day ice makers, etc. That vessel brand new from the shipyard was 875,000.00. Some of these plastic center consoles with a few egg beaters on the back cost more. I can steam over 4,000 miles without needing fuel. They are lucky to get 400 miles.

Boater definitely should have gone back,. No the kayaker didn't REALLY belong there but he had a right to be there. Kayaker was obviously on way back to his dock or home/truck but non-powered ( row boat, sail boat, etc) has right of way over any powered boat.

Power boats must always give way to non-powered watercraft. Yes, kayaker made a bad choice, but if an accident actually had occurred, the powerboat captain would be at fault.

Why was the kayaker flying a Diver Down flag?
@jim2386
@jim2386 Жыл бұрын
Because typically they are put on the surface to let boaters know divers are below and to stay back. He’s likely part of the dive team.

That the motor boat was overtaking another boat in a narrow waterway without checking what was in front of it is extremely bad seamanship. That a kayak is of low profile is no excuse whatsoever. It might as well have been a person swimming - just imagine someone fell overboard. As an experienced sea kayaker I know that many boaters are outright idiots. So are some kayakers, but boat propellers will reduce you to pulp. Therefore: I would NOT paddle through a busy inlet. And there is absolutely NO NEED to do so: I would land at the sandy ocean beach, get my kayak on my shoulders and walk 100 yards or so to put my kayak into water again from the beach on the lagoon side. A quick look on google map shows that this is entirely possible at this specific location (use Sea Lake Drive just south of the inlet). Now if you are unable to portage your kayak over such a short distance then just stay in ONE body of water (lake, lagoon, open sea). If for any reason you are forced to paddle through such an inlet, stay very close to the right, unlike this amateur did. Have your sprayskirt closed and be sure of your eskimo roll skill, in the unlikely yet possible case wakes and their reflection from the nearby walls will topple your kayak. If you have no idea what what sprayskirt/ eskimo roll means, just do not kayak there.

The police should enforce the no wake zone as posted . Sail boats and muscle powered watercraft has the right of way over powerboats except when it is a large commercial ship that cannot maneuver fast safely

That was a close call. Is there a speed limit/ no wake zone in that area? It seems there should be. The problem started with the bigger boat passing the smaller so close too. How did that smaller boat handle the wake? I think the kayaker needs a taller flag and maybe stop playing in the channel. We have seen other close calls at Haul Over inlet with kayakers, wave runners and paddle boards. Slow down and be careful folks.
