Maybe you could try to anchor down the copper tape with UV solder mask? A dab of super glue underneath may work as well, but the fumes would be nasty.

Definitely going to give this a go next time!

The "Copper slug tape" is not a bad idea, but I thing that next time You could try to apply that UV solder mask around (on the edges) to try hold it in place.

Thats a very good idea. I will try that next time!

Great work on this restoration! Seems to be a million factors to pads coming off the board, not just cap removal technique... it's good to have different options for different scenarios, and way to repair the inevitable damage :)

Thank you! I always think if I come away from a project having learned something its a win :D

Well saved Lee. I only got the 600 out of the cupboard when I was sorting the 1200 for your auction. It would most likely have just sat there for many more months otherwise. Let's hope your hard work & patience pays off to land a few extra £ in the final total.

It was a lovely gift. One I would have kept for sure if I didnt have another one already. And fun to fix up too! Thank you again Andrew!

Yet another amazing machine for the charity auction, it's going to be epic! I also really like your measured comments on the thorny subject of SMD cap removal, good to have more calm discussion about it. I've been attempting to sunbright an Acorn A3000 and like your A600, it's definately improved the yellowing but it's not back to factory - defo easiest retro brighting tho!

Two weeks ago i recaped Sony ICF-SW7600 (early '90 production) with twist off method. In most cases there were not enough space to do that with soldering iron. I was feared that when i over heat pads they would be easily lifted. Everything went smoothly. Corroded solder does not melt as easily. Often it does not melt but crumbles.

Vias also tend to be damaged/broken by corrosion.
