Nice to see you improving your video format, good job! Regarding the Alfa Romeo engine, the reliability degrades as they made new revisions of the engine to meet emission requirements, CF1 and CF2 engines were pretty bulletproff while most of the CF3 engines in the 147 were pretty bad. Different piston rings made them horrible with oil consumption...

I would like to comment on your review of the Alfa twinspark engine. I own a 1.6 ts, and a 2.0 ts cloverleaf, both have never let me down. They both get a hard life also as you need to rev them to get the best out of them. I have never heard about the engines seizing. Also, with more clearance between the piston and liner you would not have the problem of cold seizure, the opposite is true. If you have tight tolerances between the piston and cylinder liners then you run the risk of cold seizure, which is why formula one engines are pre heated before start up, they run super tight tolerances. Unless you don't service them regularly with good oil then yes failures may happen, that goes for EVERY engine. They use oil, quite like Honda b and k series engines, and a lot of other engines. There is a sticker on the inside of the windscreen that warsn owners to keep on top of the oil level, they use oil by design. But to say they are unreliable is totally FALSE.

It would be interesting seeing that boxer diesel in the USA. With the amount of power that people can get out of diesel engines, having one properly balanced and then having the engine properly tuned and set up by somebody who knows what they're doing could make that engine astonishingly awesome. Imagine driving racing a flat for diesel. That would be fun or at least interesting if nothing else ... I still have the dream of taking a 1GZ and running it as 2 separate 2JZ engines.

I own a 2001 A4 B5 Avant 2.5 TDI with 214.000km on the odometer. I own it since 2018. Until today I had no major issues. It’s very important to change the engine oil regularly and use good 5W30 or even better 5W40 oil. I change mine every 12 months or 15.000km. I use Ravenol NDT 5W40 which is an oil for big heavy duty diesel truck engines but it works in that engine too. It has a high amount of ZDDP, which is a protective additive for camshafts and other engine parts with a lot of stress. Don’t do long intervals!!! Do not wait 30.000km For the oil change!!! Every 12 Months or every 15.000km!!! Never drove the car on almost empty fuel tank. Otherwise you will kill the VEP44 fuel injection pump! I refuel my car when it dips below 1/4 tankvolume. The 2.5TDI is not a bad engine if you care for it.

Cooling pipe fails, injection pump fails, timing chain fails due to long oil changes, oil pan size, DPFs clogging. We could add the Ford 1.0 ecoboost which had the nylon hose rupturing, apparently with no warning causing the engine to be scrap. The story is (almost) always the same: it is not typically the engine that is weak, it is some ancillary part. In some cases a part which costs a few cents.

Thanks for the details as to why the Subaru diesels have problems! At one point I was considering putting the Forester TD on my short-list, but did hear that they had issues. High on my list now is the 2nd gen VW Eos because I'd prefer to have the more reliable 2.0L TSI engine rather than the FSI with its problems! Also, prices on coupes can vary quite a bit as it usually depends on how badly the seller needs a family vehicle (often it's to replace their 2-door vehicle with an SUV these days), so it pays to patiently wait for the right car at the right price to become available!

The Pontiac Fiero is an ancient car. These were products of the 1980's. GM design back in the day was in contempt of their customers. As I was around back in the dark ages, I was around when the fire recall occured. The recall was due to fuel leaks causing fires, not seizure from oil starvation. The Iron Duke 4 banger was used as the Fiero was designed to be a small commuter car, not a sports car. GM bean counters didn't want the car to be able to out perform the Trans Am, Camaro, or Corvette back in the day. Since engines were heavily emissions choked back then, making for slow cars across the board, it meant a rough, noisy 4. 2nd gen cars were finally allowed to have the 2.8L V6, which had it's own litany of issues.

@VisioRacer 2006 BMW 320si, was a special edition, engine was built in conjunction with Williams F1... loads of these engines failed with cracks between the walls of two adjoining cylinders. Repair meant a whole new block... owned one myself engine failed at 95k despite full main dealer service history. Considering only 2500 were made, it was a shocking engine.

I think the Peugeot/Citroen/Jaguar/Land Rover 2.7 V6 turbo diesel needs a mention. They can and do snap their crankshaft. Obviously a snapped crankshaft is the end of the engine, all them broken bits of metal flying around before the engine actually cuts out.
