The algorithm solidifying beliefs thing!! So true!I feel like everyone who has a crazy belief is only always served things that make it seem more real. I literally remember talking to someone who was into Trump (we were arguing about it) and I was shocked at some of the things he had seen in the news or on social media. Really loving the fact that your videos fully stopped appearing in my recommendations for years, and only resurfaced a few weeks ago. Don't know what's going on there. Do not like it. I can't tell the difference between channels I'm subscribed to and those I watched half a video from, they show up with the same frequency. The adverts have gone from irritating to insufferable. I am beginning to suspect that they're trying to kill KZbin. It's all very worrying.

So change the algorithm. Look at some opera or chemistry, or something entirely not characteristic of you. Start watching pro-Trump videos or Biden spots. Confuse the shit out of them. You can change and confuse the algorithm. So on any give day I might be a new mother, a Q anon supporter, a Jewish rabbi, a trans teacher or maybe non binary barbie doll.

I really loved the Social Dilemma because it really brought forward what Edward Snowden told us years ago, but now with these people we can associate with. I think the downside is that they kind of ended it off by saying the real world is out there, without really acknowledging that it's Covid times and it's not really possible to meet new people irl. I struggled to meet people before these times.

TYLER. I literally watched this yesterday and Facebook recommended this vid straight away, seems like my algorithm is quite on point. I feel like these trillion dollar companies really do need a revamp on their purpose. What’s scary is that they have all this information and they could use this info with bad intent, revamp the purpose and I think we’d see a drastic change is the way people use social media.

I've always wondered why your recent videos are always somewhat short time-wise, but when you brought it up in this video I really respect your decision to do that. this documentary really opened my eyes to a lot of dark truths about social media. now I'm really aware that I am in favor of introducing some kind of legislative regulations for social media standards/layouts for the sake of this country, humanity itself, and the future of this planet.

Isn’t it funny that Tyler watched a documentary on a platform with the recommendation algorithm that instilled in him the idea to share with others not to believe everything the algorithm puts in front of them... I’m glad that this documentary is raising awareness of this issue and the fact that it came into public awareness so strongly and quickly is support for its own argument!

I’ve slowly started to phase out social media over the last 3 years. After all the speculation around what happened in 2016, I realized how much of a problem it was. Plus it’s always creeped me out how much they know about us, but we are all in one way or another contributing to the problem. In California I believe you can opt out of them selling your data. We need that at a federal level. Now if you add stuff like Clearview AI into that mix it makes you realized how truly non existent our privacy is anymore because current technology. It’s a double edge sword.

I just graduated with a BA with a minor in journalism, and I had to take a social media class that discussed how people are impacted by social media and what it looks like to interact with it without being trapped by it. We listened to tons of discussions from Tristan Harris, and I found it so absolutely necessary for our generation. Wish more people would think critically about what we consume, how we consume it, where we consume it and why we consume certain things over others. Now more than ever people have to be conscious with our decisions and the implications it leaves us with.

That's a great point how our personal algorithms reinforce our beliefs in a way that hinders us when we interact others with opposite opinions in real life. It is a way to divide us all.

For those interested, Destin from SmarterEveryDay made a 3 video series about social media manipulation on different platforms. One of the guests in his series was also in the documentary. I think another very important takeaway was how strongly some the people being interviewed felt about not letting their children use social media. I think those pulling the strings have been very effective in using echo chambers to stoke the current political fires, especially surrounding BLM, protests, and the pandemic.

I see more and more people start to talk about this so I think the conversation is gradually starting up. I feel like as a people we have to start demanding boundaries for this sort of stuff from our governments so that these giants will have to abide by them. I feel like we'd be off much stronger as a whole if we weren't cooped up all the time with this stuff. Really nice video Tyler and I think too that it'd be mad interesting to see you have a deeper discussion about this with one of those people.

I left all social media except youtube and discord (if you count discord as social media) in January. I feel so much better now that I am off it and I am pretty careful with the people I do follow on youtube and never look at the suggestions or recommended for me stuff because, I have enough youtube to get caught up on from channels I already care about. Idk, I definitely think that more regulation is needed just because of the insane amount of influence social media platforms hold

Question: With the awareness that the algorithums are selling data and using tactics to keep people on the platform, should anything be done about it? If people were to say "Well I don't like this I want it to stop" wouldn't the quality of these platforms that so many people use/like go down? Would that be the goal/solution?

Oh man, that documentary is what prompted me to NOT click on the ‘home’ page on KZbin anymore and only watch from my Sub-list, which I barely have time to catch up to anyways, at least there is an end to it. Coincidentally, also how I rediscovered you just now. I’ve actually always been subbed but what’s the point if rec’s are being pushed in your face so persistently. Unless if I actively avoid the Home-page and side bar. So I’ve been doing that and I feel a lot of pressure fell away and joy came from that. I’ve always been subscribed to you, but since my home-page kept feeding my monkey brain hit-or-miss fast food content of sh*t it already KNOWS, I kept missing content of people I decided beforehand I liked enough to watch more of, such as your channel. It might be overkill and childish, but I even started to petulantly ignore the sidebar recs, instead, I look up the video that caught my interest via the search bar. Also, the point about how you come back from the surge into your own algorithm facing the real world like ‘what the f*ck is everybody on about?’ I really felt that. You feel you’re frantically keeping up with the news everyday but at the same time you’re not cause it’s so catered. Not to mention, it’s even weirder from a non-US point of view because a lot of social media, in English, is lead by the US. And a lot of sh*t doesn’t apply that directly to us. Meanwhile we’re ignorant to problems in our own countries we go out and have opinions About countries we do not even live in. In fact, at times, we are egged on to do so or called bad people and so on ... it’s sort of crazy, all of it ... Anyways, happy seeing you again! Cheers Tyler, hope you’ll stay happy and healthy despite the literal apocalypse over there. Genuinely hope the best for all of you over on the other side of the sea and may the Pandemic piss off soon v_v!

This is such a psychologically interesting topic. The internet in general has done so much to the human psyche in my opinion. Imagine if it went away suddenly? What would life even be like? Can you imagine how you'd do most of your day to day tasks?

until there are regulations nothing will change on how we’re being influenced by the heads of the platforms we’re on but it’s always the best to be aware and make a change in yourself to “break the system” is the best way i can put it

The social dilemma was really interesting to elevate the debate around social medias and data and raise awareness about its downfall but part of the problem with it, and they told it in the doc, is that technologies and people behind them will always be drawn to design them for profit. These algorithm seek efficiency in getting your time and attention because it's worth so much money. If you want more money coming, make it more efficient and sell people's time to the most offering. I mean whatever law or social movement couldn't solve it as long as we are not tackling the capitalistic scheme we are trapped in. We all are trapped into a cycle where we work to get money and earn because the time we are putting into this process is worth money and that's labor force. This whole system was designed to profit over other people's back to escape the suffering of hard work and earn even more. We can believe that social media's consequences are mistakes made by 20 ingeneers that got overwhelmed or accept that they are validating this system by making it easier to earn with a platform. It's easy to come clean saying "we made a mistake, people should raise their voices' when you built it and you did nothing when it was too late. They should have talked more about the process of making the internet a profitable place.

Poor MySpace wasn't invited to party again. Adding doco to the list. I watched Paris Hilton's doco couple days ago I'd suggest people go watch that you learn a lot about her/her brand. It's very sad too
