I love the video. I love that you acknowledge that sometimes less intrusive is a great option if the OEM provides information to do so. I would love to see the OEMs or the Industry specifically identify what is an outer panel ( Is a rear body an outer? Is one of the most common questions I get asked) or a structural or non-structural panel to identify what panels may have some options. I hope that some of the wreck checkers out there watch this because it seems like they conveniently forget this type of information exists.

Great video guys! This information is very much appreciated and needed for our industry. GM does now offer an overlap or a backing plate on several different procedures. There is a document on this GM doc 5247829. It is an added hyperlink on many outer panel sectioning procedures. On the FCA Stellantis outer panel sectioning nonstructural procedures it mentions a 13mm backing plate and also a 50 mm backing plate. Lots of confusion on which one we are supposed to be using can you address? We would love to see you address the movement toward repairing frames that are UHS steel and the challenges that will bring. Toyota guidelines are now saying repair all steel unless it’s kinked is the way we are reading their body repair manual. They have removed crib 175 and revised crib 160. Thoughts? Fords welding precautions line #8 guidelines state that UHS steel should not be heated to straighten and severely kinked or bent parts should be replaced. So we can repair if it’s not kinked? Thoughts? Keep up the great work! We appreciate your time and energy! Collision techs would love to see QR codes with repair procedures! Honda guidelines for repairing frame rails on the UHS and HSS frame rails. If a rail 780 MPa or higher is 5mm out we cannot restore frame dimension? This seems to be very invasive! Scott Kaboos help!

Craig, thanks for the questions/comments! Appreciate you sharing the GM backing information and happy to see them allowing it; we'll be sure to include an update in a future Repair U episode. Can you direct me to one of the Stellantis 50 mm backer procedures? I know they use them on some rails, but don't recall a model with an outer calling for one; I'm sure I'm forgetting... Can you also direct me to a Toyota procedure; I haven't seen anything like that and would want to reach out to Toyota for clarification, as it doesn't seem aligned with their normal strategy. I believe CRIB 160 is an SRS document...am I looking at the wrong number or are you? For Ford, they allow cold straightening (if not kinked) up to 600 MPa; no straightening, at all, above that. Also, a 'kink' includes areas that are seemingly (by appearance) bent, but cannot be restored to the proper state and/or shape. No straightening on Honda 780; this isn't unlike most OEMs that warn against straightening anything over 600 MPa. GM is the only OEM (on the ATS) that I've seen allowing anything close to the 700+ range. Scott Kaboos is no longer with Honda; he's bee over at I-CAR for a copule of years now. .

@@jasonbartanen In the FCA / Stellantis sectioning guide for non structural you will see the hyper link for the instruction for the backing plate. Specific instructions on the width 50mm. I only see the 13mm backings plate on the structural parts . I totally love FCA / Stellantis using repair methods not procedures but in specific cases it actually creates confusion.Ram bedside and rear body panels and roofs for examples, replace as serviced and weld bond the panel when using store is what the welding document states. Thanks for the reply sir!

My apologies I referenced the wrong crib # from Toyota. On the revised Toyota crib 161, states cold repair can be done as long as the metal is not kinked. Many B pillars and frame rails and more are UHS from Toyota. Crib 175 specifically said that any HSS or UHS steel in the passenger compartment could not be repaired, that crib is no longer in the body repair guidelines. new revised 161 does not prohibit the repairing of UHS steel or am I missing something here? I am adding the original crib 161 and 175 . I would greatly appreciate clarification, thank you for your time and considerations! Please read crib 161 and see if we are missing something. I know Scott is with I-CAR but you guys have lots of connections, would love to see more information and context around the HSS and UHS steel and frame dimensions being off on Honda/ Acura vehicles. old version CRIB # 161 Collision Damage Repair Precautions HIGH STRENGTH & ULTRA HIGH STRENGTH STEEL (HSS & UHSS) OCCUPANT CABIN REINFORCEMENT REPAIR IS PROHIBITED HSS & UHSS occupant cabin reinforcements are designed to absorb, channel, and dissipate collision energy and perform at 100% strength in their original shape. However if they are damaged and repaired, they will no longer perform as intended. Damaged HSS cabin reinforcements require replacement deleted version CRIB # 175 TITLE: HSS & UHSS CABIN REINFORCEMENT REPAIR & REPLACEMENT SECTION: STRUCTURAL BULLETIN #175 (revised) MODELS: ALL TOYOTA, LEXUS, and SCION DATE: DECEMBER 2009 Model-specific ‘Collision Damage Repair Manuals’ contain ‘Structural Outline’ illustrations that identify locations and strength ratings for High Strength Steel (HSS) and Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) components throughout body and frame structures. This information is provided so that collision repair professionals can make informed decisions on repair and replacement of components that provide high margins of crash safety to vehicle occupants. Because occupant safety is such a high priority, HSS and UHSS occupant cabin reinforcement repair is not recommended. Do not use the following occupant cabin reinforcement repair procedures: Hot and cold straightening methods Sectioning of 980 MPa and 590 MPa strength rated pillar reinforcements Sectioning of 440 MPa rated components at locations other than those specified Backer Panel Joint Overview: Backer panel procedures may be used to achieve a smooth joint between panel sections. The backer panel works well in areas where there is not enough room to smooth or feather in an overlap joint. The backer panel joint is a common repair for rocker panels, quarter panels and body side apertures. FCA backing plate under Non-Structural backing plate. Create a 50 mm. (2 in.) backer panel out of an unused portion of original or new sheet-metal panel, whichever contains the appropriate shape. Be certain it has a precise fit to the back of the panels it will join.

Hello. 3:39 Which part on which model and make is above 1500 mPa? Honda Civic have rear 1500 mPa rails. But what is above 1500?

Yeah, if you pull the construction materials chart, it will tell you by the numbers what parts are 1500 and lower based on the MPA
