Talisker 10 is one of my favourite whiskies. When people say they changed the recipe, did they really, or are the changes in taste due to a change of production techniques, cask quality, and barley used. After all, the old branding was from 2012 to 2021 so comparisons could be between whisky produced at very different times. Keep up the great content!

I went to the Talisker Distillery last year and the tour guide said they no longer burn peat for drying the barley. They smoke the peat now so that they can return the used peat back into the peat bog as a more sustainable practice. I wonder if that explains the dirty smoke profile as - I'm guessing here - the incomplete combustion may result in dirty smoke. Like it does on a BBQ if you put the smoke wook on before the coals have got going.

What an interesting video. I used to to drink the old Talisker 10 which came in a beige cardboard box back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. That was dirty, peppery, mineral coastal rocks and peaty. I have been complaining ever since that each time Diageo brings out another version of Talisker 10, it is more dumbed down, more rounded and sweeter. Ironically, the more sea spray and rock they displayed on the packaging, the more it tasted of butterflies and summer meadows. Last year I was in Skye and opened a 20cl Talisker 10 to drink at the end of the day. Honestly, I thought I had COVID. I couldn't taste anything. It was just so bland! Thank G-d I had some Torabhaig to hand which showed me that there was nothing wrong with my nose and taste. I have not tried Talisker 10 since and had no wish to until watching your video. Really? Diageo have tried to inject some of the old Talisker 10 character? Thanks. I might just give the new one a try. PS. I managed to pick up an old bottle of Talisker 57 Degrees North in some store in Tel Aviv last week. This is close to real Talisker as I remember it. I was so upset when I heard that they had discontinued this.

Well I should say... I enjoyed the first bottle of the new design. I've since changed my mind. I've had two other bottles since this review and they were a definite downgrade. I no longer recommend it. I've toyed with taking this video down. Cheers!

@Gwhisky If you ever see Talisker 57 Degrees North, get it. I guarantee you'll love it. *On the Nose* Sweet coastal sea engine oil steam train smoke after a rain storm. Smelly beeswax honey. Some coal soot from the engine. A lot, and I mean a lot, of sweet wood spices. Sooty, sea salty with a slight savoury peat. Furniture polish, freshly ground Black Pepper and sea-salt crystals, wet old leather, mixed spices, apple and honey cake with a touch of red chilli pepper. *Tasting* Swirling it around in the mouth, it has a full-bodied and oily sea water mouth feel. Salty crackers, Black pepper kettle crisps, salty cheese and caramel snacks, cooked apples with black treacle, burnt brittle toffee, beeswax honey with a touch of herring oil. It doesn't say it, but it's non-chill filtered as well. How do I know? Try adding water and leaving it for 15 minutes. The whisky has turned as opaque as dirty washing up water.

Talisker 10 is one of those I always replenish, unfortunately I won't be able to compare it, as I finished the old bottle. But I do remember that when I uncorked the new one I felt a deeper peat impact (neck pour maybe?). I would say it's a nice consistent whisky at an affordable price, so thumbs up for Diageo this time (it doesn't happen often, hahaa). Great review! Thank you very much.. Cheers. 🥃
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Fer Nando! Yeah it does seem a bit more peat-forward. I'm sure there's been no change to the distillate or ppm. I think that added peatiness is the result of some changes with the casks. I'm glad you still enjoy it too! 🥃
@russell37332 жыл бұрын
In talking about possible changes to the new bottling, there were no dramatic changes at the distillery in 2011 as far as I know (and consequently no changes to the make up of the distillate), so there are only two other factors that can be changed. One is cask selection and the age of the casks; the other is, as you said, the possible addition of some older casks to the vatting. Maturation, as always, happens at Black Grange on the mainland where Diageo has its massive warehouse complex for all of its 28 distilleries. So no differences in the climate or place of maturation either. If the new bottling is a tad more "in your face" it may just be a slight change in the proportion of first-fill casks to refill American barrels. That would account for some slightly stronger tannins and a little more heat on the finish. And yes, you're right when you suggest that these entry-level bottlings remain really good value for money as they hardly ever are subject to unexpected price hikes (the 30 to 40 pounds, dollars, euros price bracket is highly competitive among the supermarket whiskies, thank God). Let's hope that value for money ratio will stay constant far into the future! Cheers.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! Yes I'm sure it's just a matter of the casks selected. Perhaps a smaller proportion of older casks, perhaps a different ratio of first fill to refill. Unfortunately production info from Diageo remains very limited (as always), so we're left to speculate. I'm just happy it's still delicious and sold at a great price. Cheers Russell, appreciate the input! 🥃

This is my Talisker journey in the last couple of years: Talisker 10 old label - absolutely loved it, Talisker Storm - it was ok, Talisker DE - loved it, and now I’m almost halfway through a bottle of Talisker 10 new label. I want to love it so much, but it’s just not working for me. It’s like one of those whiskies you mention sometimes: it’s not even bad enough to remember it. I still have an unopened bottle of the old one, perhaps I’ll open it soon and find out if it’s the whiskey that changed, or if it’s just me. :) Cheers, man!

Hi, nice review. I didn't do a side by side but it seems the newer one is more to my liking. But could some of these differences be due to oxidisation? Your old bottle is emptier. Maybe that accounts for less peat for example?
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
It's an older bottle, yes. But I'm quite certain the change is a result of using a different formula of casks, possibly younger casks. Besides, Talisker 10 doesn't usually go "flat" like a Laphroaig might, for example. I'm convinced it's not that.

Thanks for the review ! The review I saw noted that the colour is really orange now - maybe to match the new etiquette?! Looking at the 2 you have, it seems that is true. I worry about the amount of colouring used in the new one.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
To be honest if there is a difference in colour its a small one. It's not as dramatic as I'd heard. In fact it's almost indistinguishable from the old one. If it's darker, it's only slightly. I think the orange fringe on the label might make it appear more orange than it actually is...

For my own part I don't fancy the torn label look. It already looks dated. The last Talisker 10 I tasted was at a Zoom tasting in early 2022 and if I recall correctly it was a bottle sporting the previous lable design. In the peated category it took top honours among the 14 whiskies tasted, beating out Port Askaig cask strength and Compass Box's Peat Monster. Judging by the comments section the new make may not be up to snuff. I might wander down to the store where the Talisker 10 was bought and see if they have any of the old bottles left. It was well priced at the time, something like C$80 or so. In my whisky stash I happen to have a Talisker 10 that I bought in duty free a decade ago (for which I paid US$32) and another bought back in 1988 just prior to my first big backpacking trip. It sports the best Talisker label, the one with the map of Skye on it.

@groberti2 жыл бұрын
NIce analysis! I bough the new Talisker 10 a few months ago and I am hugely disappointed! :/ I loved the older bottling, it was, for me at least, truly magical. Smoky but not too smokey, a nice sweetness, briny - sea salty, sea weedy, the chili catch and beautifully balanced. The new bottling is, for me at least, none of that. It is smokier but that's it. There is no realy complexity to it imho. The nice sweetness is gone, there is a dry smoke in there, the chili catch is mostly gone as well and converted into a general spiciness. It is not as sea salty as it was. A different whiskey. A whiskey that is imho trying to be an Islay because Islay whiskies are very popular nowadays but fails miserably. It became a worse version of Laphroaig 10. It is not what it was, it is not unique anymore.

@@Gwhisky actually I’ve tried it out with water since then and imho this version of Talisker is improved by it. The smokiness is taken back a bit, the sweetness is a bit stronger and the oceany sea salt appears in the back with the chilly catch upfront. Still not as good as my bottling from ~2012 but js closer to it. So it seems the same spirit is still buried beneath the heavier smoke. Would love to try out the DE edition to compare the quality of that one as well.

You have to admire the clarity of the distillery character. I'm sure I'll enjoy the new recipe. However, I do love low-to-medium peated whiskies, just because the market is skewed towards heavily peated ones (which I also happen to love). Instead of upping the peat, I'd rather they ditched chill-filtration and also the fake tan. And even with the new recipe they should do that. But they won't.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the peat level should be the same. I doubt there's been any change at the distillation level. I think a different collection of casks are being used that display a bit more youth, bringing a bit more of the peatiness forward. That being said, it's still very much a gently peated whisky. Much lighter than the heavily-peated Islay stuff. But yeah, the fake tan and chill filtration we could definitely do without. Cheers Craig! 🥃

This is likely just batch variation more than any recipe changes. Try another with a different laser etched dare and you'll pick up more differences. I don't buy Ardbeg 10 because I find the batch variation too different and not to my tastes.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
I think it's more than batch variation. I found the older version to have very little batch variation over the years, then suddenly a notable shift in flavours with the new bottle. I should be clear though, the “recipe change” I described is almost certainly not a change to the distillation or the distillate itself. Instead I think it's a different approach to the cask play. But I'll be the first to admit that this is all speculation on my part. It's not like Diageo ever tells us anything! 🥃

I'm not exactly a connoisseur, but I bought a bottle of this yesterday and not a fan. There's a lot of good flavors, but that vanilla taste you describe tastes like artificial cupcake frosting to me and it completely ruins it. It's the toothpaste and orange juice effect to me. I usually drink with one ice cube in my scotch, but this definitely works better neat.

Am I the only one that still smells damn green apple too.. Also it's defenitly an ok balanced whisky, especially at the price that I got it here. (45euro).👍 It's a good scotch to drink a "daily" dram off. Its good quality and ok its colored but coloring may never influence flavour! I wish it was ot chill filtered. I prefer Ardbeg uigeadail and corryvreckan and Laphroaig 10 cask strength only (Europe you know regular 10 only 40% abv...) I like most islays more. But lagavulin 16 is chill filtered and colored and still a very good dram too.. And yes this isn't an Islay but it tastes like one imo.. It's a good dram. So cheers.🥃

I'll have to check for the green apple note next time I have it. It's definitely a competitive whisky against a lot of good Islay offerings, although like you I tend to gravitate towards cask strength stuff. Cheers! 🥃

I don't know why but I simply don't enjoy this whisky... something turns me off and I can't quite wrap my head around what it is. Another one everyone loves but I'm not too fond of is the GlenGarioch 12. I'm holding off on finishing those bottles to see if my opinion changes in a few months.

I've had a more recent bottle of the Talisker 10 and I was far less impressed than I was with this bottle. Generally speaking I'm a big Talisker 10 fan, but I admit it doesn't always hit. I'm with you on the Glen Garioch 12. It's decent stuff, but I don't really get the hype myself. Cheers Bruno. 🥃

Very interesting comparison. Partly because I have an unopened bottle of the old label on my shelf from (I believe...) 2012 ish :-) Do you think the differences that you're seeing are definitely from a tweaked recipe? Or could it be from variations in the casks that are available? Interested in your thoughts.

Always beware of new packaging. It very often signals a change in the product and not for the better. I have seen this happen with many products over the years. As soon as they start talking to accountants and marketing, you might as well kiss it goodbye. That is true for this product. We could wax eloquent about all of the "fruity notes" and nuances in whatever new "Expression" it happens to be. The 'Kiss of the Sea' is not there for me anymore. I do not say it lightly. After thirty years of looking forward to my glass of Talisker in the evening, they just lost me.

Haven't bought a Talisker for years. For that price, there are so many better options. Talisker was a go to for non Islay peated whiskies for sometime. Ledaig now holds that distinction. Kudos for a very objective review despite the disgust for Diageo. I mean, seriously, they need to get over the coloring and chill filtering. Get over it Diageo! People are okay with a slight haze in their whiskies. Hazy IPA's are a thing these days. The consumers do not crave highlighter orange colored whiskies that are ridiculously transparent while reflecting kaleidoscopic images off gigantic ice cubes in a pentagonal tumbler. Whatever.
@Gwhisky2 жыл бұрын
Lol you do paint a picture with your words. Yeah I dunno, I don't want every review of a Diageo product to turn into a rant, but they make it so hard... Ledaig is a favourite of mine, too. But I do have a soft spot for the special flavour niche that Talisker occupies. Somewhere between Islay, the islands, and the highlands. And that minerality gets me every time. Cheers! 🥃
@yoursinsincerely392 жыл бұрын
@@Gwhisky What's a review without a rant about Diageo anyways? It's un-biased and objective. What's the fun in that? But jokes apart, I think that is where you stand out Geoff. While our taste in whisky is always personal and subjective, a review has to be impersonal and objective to be successful. Your reviews are almost always that. Talisker does have a place on my shelf in-spite of the incessant gall I spew against Diageo. It is, as you said difficult to come up with an objective bromide that would downplay their annoying marketing strategies. Cheers!
