The smaller the trailer, the harder it is to back up. Thank goodness I grew up backing garden tractors with little garden dump trailers and later had several landscaping jobs backing single and dual axel trailers in to driveways of every type. Some over a quarter mile long with no room to turn the truck and trailer around .

I'm surprised they don't sell wands that would stick out to each side to give you an indication of where the trailer is going. They have them for towable air compressors and other short equipment that gets towed by construction crews. I had a couple of snow plow wands that I used on the back end of one of my trailers to tell me where it was going.

I taught many people over the years how to back a trailer up. First thing is practise at home, not at a busy launch ramp. A quick way is to put your hand at six o'clock on the steering wheel, one foot on the gas and the other on the brake. If you want the trailer to go right then move your hand to the right then the same left. Go slow, two footing it gives you faster control over your speed meaning no lag time from gas to brake using just your right foot (I don't suggest you drive on the road this way cause you'll burn your brakes up and piss everyone off behind you). Watch the corresponding mirror that your hand has moved and as soon as you see the fender or back marker on the trailer start making the proper adjustments. The key is slow and steady, you'll soon get it and your stress levels at the ramp will subside, along with everyone else's at the ramp. Remember, the trailer will have a totally different attitude when empty. It will react much faster so keeping things slow and focusing on your mirrors will keep you out of trouble when backing down. Don't get frustrated, it only makes things worse and don't ever blame the equipment and curse the trailer, you are the captain of that ship as well so slow down have a plan of attack and keep your shit together. Happy trails.

You'd think that even a person with no experience backing up a trailer after several attempts would realise that they're turning the steering wheel the wrong way. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is literal madness.
@pulaski13 жыл бұрын
You mught think so, but backing a trailer is a bit like the crazy bicycle which has a gear in the steering column, so turn the handlebars left turns the wheel to the right, and vice versa - because in order to get a trailer to go in a given direction (left or right) you have to turn the wheel in the opposite direction from the way if you were just backing the vehicle. I don't use a trailer regularly (I don't own a boat anyway), maybe 2-3 times a year, and only need to back the trailer once or may be twice a year, and so it takes immense concentration to stop my reflexes kicking in and turning the wheel the wrong way. I might have to "reset" six or more times in backing the trailer just 60ft-80ft. If I backed the trailer ever day I am sure it would become much easier, but despite loving driving, and driving 30,000-35,000 miles a year most years, I _dread_ having to back my trailer. FWIW it is a fairly short utility trailer, which I hear is relatively difficult to back up.
@JustOneQuestion3 жыл бұрын
@@pulaski1 The big difference is that on the bike your balance relies on you getting the steering right so it requires split second decisions to not fall off, with a trailer you can stop and have all the time in the world to decide which way to turn the wheel. A better analogy would be a reverse steering bike with stabilisers (training wheels). If you take it slowly you'd very easily get to where you're going.

It's tough with the single place jetski trailer but not nearly as bad as the little Harbor Freight trailer, you blink and that trailer jack knifes. I am usually by myself and have to load/unload on my own so I it helps to have a routine and some visual markers. What helped me with my jetski trailer was installing a fiberglass rod I bought from Home Depot. I mounted it on the rear of the trailer, passenger side. With the tailgate up I can see the rod and can immediately see where the trailer is headed. I have gotten so used to it now I can tell if it is between two marks on my tail gate it is straight behind my truck. I have a backup camera but it makes it more difficult.

Went out riding then came back to trailer it… and damn, I could not see the trailer at all. I mean zero, by the time you could see anything in a side mirror, it was already too late.
