Normally, when at work, I have a coworker who can operate either the truck or the boat, so the driver never has to leave the cab. I have had a couple cases where I am maneuvering a large express boat around the yard to launch and the truck gets snatched down the ramp, but I have a 10k rule, which is any boat with a weight over 10k must have a minimum of 3 people to launch. 1 in the truck, 1 in the boat, and one with chocks to block tires in the event a boat pulls the truck down the ramp. We have never had a vehicle get submerged, and have been able to prevent disaster on multiple occasions. Ramps in Florida get extremely slick, and it only takes a tiny amount of slime to cause a slide.
@Pilot5453 жыл бұрын
Here is how this stuff happens. Having the parking brake on does absolutely NOTHING for a 2 wheel drive truck or a 4x4 in 2 wheel drive mode. You MUST use 4x4 at the ramp so when you put the trans in park, it locks the front tires. All the parking brake does is lock the rear tires. On a rear wheel drive truck, those tires start slipping, the whole thing goes. The front wheels are free to spin. So moral is, buy a 4x4 and ALWAYS engage it at the ramp.

This is a case where the dualies on the rear may have done the truck in. Yes, they provide more traction in some cases, but they also DOUBLE the floatation at the rear of the truck. So if you back up a few inches too many into the water, the floatation will stop the rear wheels getting traction. If he was not in 4-wheel mode, he was toasted at that point.

Duallies reduce the pounds per square inch of truck weight on the tires by almost half. That reduces the traction coefficient considerably. As far as additional floatation goes, it would be negligible until you had pretty much the whole tire in the water which should never be the case. Lock in your 4WD if you have it, get a mechanic's brake holder, chock a couple wheels or all of the above if super slippery, especially on low tide, snow or ice. Ideally you have all 4 wheels locked then the front wheels are holding on the non-slippery part of the ramp.
@darb40913 жыл бұрын

50+ years towing boats and never, ever any of the issues these people have docking a boat or pulling in and out of ramps. My 4wheel drive trucks, always in 4wheel drive no matter the conditions, parking break on, vehicle in park and I had big rubber chocks attached with lines to the hitch under the rear tires. The line was the right length that as I came up the ramp they would drag behind the truck but not under the trailer tires. I’d jump out once at level ground, unhook them from the hitch safety chain loops, toss in truck and be on my way. I would sometimes depending on conditions use the chocks putting the boat in and engaged 4wheel drive both putting in and out just in case. Common sense goes a long way. Lifted trucks are not proper tow vehicles, as there is a lot of excess strain on the drive train, etc. Big tires are no-no’s also, especially street tread types. Just like on wet streets they just don’t grip as well. Before I even had a license my dad was having me backing the boat and trailer in the driveway and up and down ramps. He also had me docking and running the boat and doing maintenance on it and the trailer. Didn’t have all the fancy electronic stuff, a compass and a chart was all anybody had, cause it wasn’t invented yet! Cars were basic and you learned hands on to do things. I watch your channel all the time and it amazes both me and my wife at the lack of common sense and the inability to do the simplest things around the water and boats. One thing i do while backing down a ramp is put my truck in natural once im on the ramp that way if something happens and u start to slide if u panic and hit the gas it does not seal the fate of your truck also i never just rely on the park brake i always engage the emergency brake as well

Really tough to watch. E-brake and 4WD is key I think. Is that the local gator swimming over at 6:40 ? Just curious if anyone sees it

The only thing a parking brake does is take the stress off the park pawl in the tranny. It has no difference in effect than the pawl.

Truck in the water you feel bad, but you just can't fix stupid. They even left the boat floating with no one on board. Just luck he was able to make the jump. LMFAO

Add 6’ to your trailer and eliminate this problem it works perfect I did no more problems JT
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
No, it wouldn't! There are plenty of ramps that would still provide a loss of traction to the rear tires at low tide.
@hookednrolling20093 жыл бұрын
@@charlieodom9107 that’s funny Charlie it work on my float on trailer at low with my dully it got to close for comfort so I added 6’ all the ramps I’ve been to Mia to fla keys but have new trailer the same length as old works fine keeps me four to five ft above waterline on low tide maybe they need eight ft or ten JT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐠🐟🎣🛥🌴⛱🙏🏻🙏🏻

Dont rule out the fact that those oversized duals are likely a higher load range tire than the truck needs. Higher load range tires generally have harder rubber compounds so they dont wear excessively when used how they were designed to be used. Add a relatively light truck, hard highway tires, slick boat ramp, low tide and 2 wheel drive and it's really not hard to find yourself in this situation.

I live in Louisiana, hunt, fish, and lease a camp in the ATCHAFALYIA Basin. I had just bought a hunting truck, a 4Runner 4x4 2000 model. After dumping the boat off the trailer(one man launch, boat bow rope hooked to trailer) I pulled forward and put the truck into park, then got out to unhook boat from trailer, ONLY TO REALIZE I had put the truck into REVERSE!!😮😮! Fortunately, after scraped legs, skinned knee, and SHATTERED EGO, I managed to jump back in the truck and slam it into park. Then D and got out of there! VERY VERY CLOSE CALL! BLOOP BLOOP BLOOP ALMOST TATTOOED ME!

Put it in neutral, set parking brake, let off brake to rest on parking brake, then put it in park
@walldogger13 жыл бұрын
You don't actually believe people are going to use the park brake correctly do you? I've seen so many vehicles drift back with the full weight on the park pawl, with no park brake set; correctly or not. Same thing with 4x4, it's like it's a "badge of manhood" to refrain from using it when conditions certainly call for it!

Good rule of thumb, is never exit the cab while on the boat ramp. Keep your foot on the brakes to prevent incidents like this.
@charlieodom91073 жыл бұрын
While this is the correct way to set the parking brake, many of these ramp incidents are from loss of traction of the rear wheels. I see them all the time pulled out with the rear tires locked. Someone should be inside with their foot on the brake pedal.

Park is only for rear wheels which was a dually on slippery ramp. Put it in 4wd and park to lock front tires.

Just for the record a Dually Is a 1 ton or 3500 series this one is a crew cab as well, sad loss wonder if putting some sand on the ramp would help.
@gremzor3 жыл бұрын
I think in this case being a dually actually worked against him. Increased surface area means less force on each section of tread which means less bite for an already light truck bed. This is similar to how up in here Michigan, if you run winter tires you can go with something slightly narrower than stock to bite into the snow better.
@Esqofosd2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Duallys and wide tyres (such as some offroad tyres) are good on dry or loose ground. On hard slippery surfaces narrow tyre are usually better.

Another channel on YT is NoNonsenseKnowHow. His truck went in, water 8' above the cab, pushed under a dock, at night. They got it out themselves, got the truck home. Two days time he had the truck stripped, dried, and putting it back together. Then he went and tested to see what happened. Motor turned off, manual in low gear, E-brake pulled. It still wanted to 'chug' and roll if the E-brake wasn't overly pulled. Putting in 4-low, motor off, E-brake pulled the same it held. He made a simple set of chocks anyway. PARK-no park doesn't always hold. A couple dozen times I've seen vehicles in park let go, in all kinds of situations, and go for a roll. Remember when you tested-motor off, in park, E-brake set, front wheels turned?

When the back tires are in the slick part of the ramp Park, parking brake, your foot on the brake is the only thing that's going to hold that truck on the ramp the two front tires. That's how It slid in so fast

If you look closely he had Semi tires on the truck. Too much tire for such a light truck. People don’t think about there tires floating

People using park alone forget that it only takes one of the rear wheels slipping to slide into the water. Never do park alone. The rear differential on every truck ever will only hold 1 of the 2 rear wheels. However if you maintain and set the parking brake it will hold both rear wheels from moving, in 4x4 the parking brake only holds 3 of the 4 wheels. The front differential will only allow 3 wheels to be held, unless you have a fancy diff lock installed. Just use your e brake and you will be fine.

Hate to see that happen to anyone. I know I love my truck and it would hurt to see it dunked. I feel bad for the guy. Hopefully insurance takes care of him and he gets another one and learns from whatever errors, if any, he made during this event. Best of luck to him.

'Who is the U-Boat commander?'
@st08783 жыл бұрын
This happened to me in a brand new Nissan Titan. There's a misconception that it is the load that pulls the truck in but it can happen with something as small as a jetski trailer. The idea that the tires somehow floated the truck is just stupid! It's a few things. First, This happens all the time to experienced and novice boaters. Second, Blackpoint Marina and other Miami boat ramps love to take ramp fees but don't pressure clean the slips at low tide enough. Algae builds up and nothing is going to hold if you get on it. The best precaution would be to always have the front wheels locked either by having someone stay in the truck with their foot on the brake or engage 4x4 if you have it. Emergency brakes only lock the rear wheels and really don't help if the rear wheels are sliding in. If I were this guy I'd sue the park services for damages if algae on the ramp was a factor.
@krisbaker94272 жыл бұрын
If no other vehicles went in like this, same day etc. it is a mistake the driver made. Why sue others?
