The grocery was back in the bay, cozy and familiar. We'd run into friends and neighbours and catch up. Also, everything was within reachable distance. You didn't have to wheel your cart ten miles to get to an item you needed. Today, some of these superstores are so huge that I actually avoid them and shop at an independently owned smaller one.

Pics from back when stores always had plenty of the staples, friendly hard working, and well paid staff. People were friendlier in general, and you could shop for a family of 4 for under $50 for the month if you were careful. Miss those days. Now half the selves are empty often as not, the staff gets paid the same rate as then and shows it. The selection of non fancy staples is much smaller, and you spend half your time in the store avoiding the other customers instead pretending they aren't there to avoid getting sucked in to their drama. I know when I prefer.

Always was amazed how a cashier could ring you up without hardly looking at the register. My wife worked at one for a couple years. Very seldom made a mistake.

"Michael, that’s incredible! Cashiers back then had some serious skills. Your wife must have been really sharp to keep things so accurate! 🛒

Things have always went up. You probably didn't live through the double digit inflation in the 70s and early 80s. Presidents of both parties were in power. Inflation has ZERO to do with who is on Pennsylvania Avenue. We have monopolies basically controlling the prices now. There's a handful of companies who make our food in the grocery store nowadays. They control the prices and not Presidents.

Considering $1.00 in 1960 is worth $10.63 Today, a pound of tomatoes would be $3.64.... So, $2.49 is actually less Today than they were then. Thanks Brandon!
