How cool is that of Spyderco- a customer sends in a knife complaining of performance- they tear the knife apart and lab test the metal, Rockwell test it and then the co-owner calls you directly to talk about the results. That’s pretty awesome.

Very interesting. Out of all my spyderco knives my zdp 189 delica is the one that has kept the best edge retention. My s110v manix has kept just as good of an edge but the tip chipped off cutting a plastic zip tie off of a small children's toy packaging.

Three years ago... Well, before the arrival of K390 steel my EDC was that model in that same steel and I was very pleased. Now I carry a Delica in K390 but the sensations are almost the same, in daily use you feel no difference except the blue instead the British racing green. ZDP189 is still very good but it seems out of fashion. In my keyring there is a Manbug in ZDP189, no need to sharpen it and it isn't rusted.

I met Sal and Eric Glesser at blade show 2018. They deeply care about the quality of the product that comes out of the shop. I have a Spyderco Endura in ZDP189 it is a staple in my user rotation. The blade holds an edge for a long long time, only has had edges the original original and a re-profile. The strop is all it takes to put the razor edge back on. I love the ZDP blade. I picked up the Spyderco Caribbean (LC200N) at the show. So far very good blade. Thank you very much for the review. : )

I had a very similar experience with a hap40 stretch where the darn thing just would not hold an edge at all... As a matter of fact I couldn't even get it to take that great of an edge either and im not a youtube reviewer or anyone special so i didn't think i would get anywhere with warranty dept so I just gave the knife away to a friend who has also complained it does not hold an edge at all and that his bos 420hc did better... I have never owned any other blades in hap40 so I just discounted the steel itself but maybe I was wrong...

I'm glad you had a good experience with that. I just bought an advocate from bhq. Upon inspection I noticed some rattling from the pivot when I shook the knife open or closed. I then proceed to call spyderco. Was told 2 different things by 2 different people . The first lady told me that if the knife was closed and made that noise it was kinda normal but in the open position it should not and there may be a defect. She gave me an option to keep it or send it in and they would take care of me.The knife appears to work fine so I was a little unsure what to do. I decided to send it in. I called again to ask about the how to since it is my first experience with spyderco warranty. I talked to a second guy who was pretty short with me and told me they can't do anything for me untill they see the knife and if there is no defect I would have to pay to ship it back. Kinda sucks since I have to pay to ship the knife to them and maybe back when this could have been caught in quality control I really don't think a knife is supposed to rattle. Also do you insure your packages when sending them out? Thanks again
@Outpost_765 жыл бұрын
I usually insure packages but I didn't on this one. From others I've heard they usually don't require you to pay for the knife to be returned. I'd send it in and see what they say.

Can you clarify what was wrong with the knife? It got dull faster then it should, but the HRC was 64 and Chromium was in the carbides not free in steel also confirmed by Spyderco. They gave you a new knife, which is also 64 Rockwell and its performing how it should. But what was the cause of the first Delica getting dull after couple feet of cardboard?
@Outpost_765 жыл бұрын
Did you see my original video about that knife? Out of 6 PMI scans 2 showed zinc. I had 9 or 10 sharpenings on the first one and it never got better. So far the replacement seems to be doing as it should.

I can also chime in and add another positive experience with Spyderco warranty Dept. I had a GB2 where the detent ball went flat and couldn't hold the blade in reliably. I sent it out for evaluation and 10 days later the UPS man dropped me off a brand new Gayle Bradley. Spyderco definitely stands behind their warranty if there is a defect in the knife the user did not cause.

I'm with Roman about it being overheated during grinding. Especially how rough and toothy the factory edge was. It looked to be mini serrations and there was slight discoloration on the factory bevel.
@darichard115 жыл бұрын
This is insanely good customer support. Most interesting to me is what this says about the reliability of Catra testing. fwiw, I've never gotten the edge retention from my ZDP knives that others report. It wasn't as bad as you're seeing, but my ZDP results have been more like M390 rather than K390.

It didn't, it was the same cardboard stock that was used in the prior test to this knife and the one tested after. This problem was isolated to the ZDP with issues.

That’s awesome that it went well. I am super curious as to why it performed so poorly but tested so high on Rockwell and nothing crazy on PMI. That’s puzzling. What are your thoughts as to why that may have happened ?

Thanks for the update. Yeah, it’s never good when Eric calls you personally. 😂 That’s really weird that their test results all supposedly came back normal, and yet it was obviously an serous under-performer for some reason.

Maybe there was something they just didn't want to tell me but I can't say for sure. The first one took edge damage way too easy. So far this one seems to be good but I'll be doing edge retention testing next week to find out.
@TheKoss114 жыл бұрын
I had that knife, and when I heard that it could break if it were used to pry even a little bit, that gave me a feeling that this knife would fail. If zdp would break on a knife as small as the delica but not on the dragonfly, then I wouldn’t want to have a knife fail on me like that. I know, some people are gonna say that if I am prying with a knife, I am a fool and the same would happen with VG-10. The thing is, ZDP is better than VG-10, or is it? This isn’t a knock on Spyderco, it’s the truth about zdp.

Spyderco is a great company but I haven't been very impressed with their warranty. I received a new knife missing a washer and after I requested a washer, they sent me a boiler-plate email telling me to send the knife in, enclose a check for $5, etc. Lame. Have some faith in your customer.
@jaystrongbow94355 жыл бұрын
If the knife was found to be a factory defect, they refund your 5 bucks. I enclosed 5.00 when I sent my GB2 in for a flat detent ball, they sent me back a new knife and my 5 bucks. Its just their process, but again, if your knife has a defect, it will come back fixed or replaced, along with your 5.00. Hope that helps.

@@dogonmountain6445 We are talking mass produced knives, not custom knives, so X amount will have issues, thats just the facts for ANY company.
