As a college freshman in New York, I went to the Met my first time to hear "Tosca" with Bjorling, Zinkanoff and Leonard Warren. That was in the fall of 1959. Little did I know the 2 great men of opera would pass away just months later. A treasured memory forever!

That was great! Was wonderful to hear Valletti again after all these years. Had a recording of him with Callas in La Sonnambula. He retired early from opera, and went into the family pasta business. Shame.

In spite of the negative statements here about Lanza's diction in E Luvevan Le Stelle, It's pretty good and his voice is great.He always showed the never ending potential of a great opera singer that somewhat eluded him.However his greatness in the so called American songs never eluded him.Perfect pitch.

sugarbist As an Italian, I can confirm that Lanza's Italian diction is far from 'disgusting'. For an American it is pretty damn good. Although when he spoke in Italian he did have an Abruzzi accent.

Thank you very much for sharing this; it's overwhelming to hear so much great singing in one place. It's not quite fair to have a dubbed-over version of Callas' later Suicidios here. It's not an accurate representation of her work at that point.

I love George London to death, and i think he's basically the perfect archetype for a bass-baritone, but can somebody more enlightened please tell me why his face makes all those contortions? His, lips, jaw, eyebrows, just...everything lol. His sound is so easy and powerful, I would never think he's frankensteining his face to achieve it.

I find it hard to tell myself, but whatever, it's still magic to me, and one of my all time favs! Only wish I could see more of similar from him. Valetti's Nemorino is truly remarkable -- for once the aria makes some sense as an expression of the character. Ist stanza absolutely top drawer! He "pushes the envelope" a bit in the 2nd, but still what artistry.

Anything from a film is most likely dubbed. Singing is a difficult task, especially high or long held notes which tends to make eyes to bulge and faces to turn red. To avoid that, singers sang an octave or so lower and then dubbed the recording in the recording studio.

The MARIA-CALLAS-PART is best re-edited. It seems to be a perfect synchronization from her great sound only recording and a late stage performance where she - let's say - sang differently. But I love to put both together. Only the piano in the back and the missing orchestra in the picture proofs that something doesn't fit. Thanks anyway!

And then, of course, there are brief snippets of Trixie Fraganza, Michael Palin, and Joan Crawford late in this post. I don't know who the roller-skating goof who lampoons Arditi's "Il bacio" is, but the dance number after that features the Ritz Brothers.

Actually Lanza had one of the greatest operatic voices ever. But he chose to be seduced by Hollywood. Someone said that he regretted not pursuing an operatic career. By then it was too late. And, tragically, he died young. Bocelli started as a pop singer but transtioned

It is very telling with so many critics of Lanza in these comments. His pronunciation and diction is terrible. ? He lacks style etc. One of you mentioned all the singers presented accept Lanza. Did anyone notice omongst all the great singers presented whose picture was used to get people to view this video. jealousy is considered a negative word. If the shoe fits where it. No singer or very few,communicated the meaning and emotion of an aria or song better than Lanza.Lanza always sounded natural. Listen to George London & B. G. Diction is the combining the CONSONANTS and the vowels to speak or sing language as a form of human COMMUNICATION. What does it matter, she had sung it stunningly since 1949, clearly she still paced it exactly the same when the voice was gone. I find this an interesting documentary of a great singer, we have to little examples of her live performances.

No, this is entirely wrong. It's just the film footage. Callas never dubbed anything. She didn't even like doing recordings for records, she wanted everything live. This was her last tour accompanied by Di Stefano. Opera singers of this calibre never lip synch!! Good grief! That's only for modern "singers" such as Madonna, Britney, Beyonce et al.

However, the creator of this You Tube video thankfully substituted the soundtrack with her much earlier EMI studio recording. I say "thankfully", because in the actual London recital she sounded so bad it was very, very sad!

Des images colorisées qui nuisent plus que se quelles apportes LANZA, pas au mieux de sa forme est en surbrillance devant ce rideau , un inventaire désuet et disparate en noir et blanc .Trop long trop lent ,je ne peut écouté et regardé plus tempis pour la callas
