Warren Zevon from 1990, on Letterman, playing a Prince Song that was featured on his new album, entitled Hindu Love Gods (which was also the name of his new band, formed with REM minus Michael Stipe).

When Prince wrote this song, and when it was popular, no one fawned over the lyrics at that time. It was all about the sound of the song. Prince was a great lyricist. In addition to his profoundly unique and 100% musicianship.
@RegisWilkins

@@HuckleberryAlexander Not really. Warren brought a masculine and muscular rock and roll attitude to the song not some beta whining. This is a huge improvement over Prince's original. Better band too.

@RegisWilkins I don't disagree with that, which is why I posted the comment to begin with. Although I am much more of a fan of Warren's songwriting, the point was that Prince could write very good lyrics as well.
@HuckleberryAlexander
@HuckleberryAlexander 7 ай бұрын
@RegisWilkins Take "Downtown Train," for another example. Tom Waits wrote it, and he recorded the best version of that song imo. But other artists (like Rod Stewart) also recorded it. Good tunes = good tunes. It boils down to any person's personal preferences by way of presentation, I suppose.

Please if you know 🎉Actually met Warren in central Queensland in 1990 he was playing with The Little River Band and he was surprised I even knew who he was!!! Only one amongst a 1000 He was loving being incognito and all he wanted to know about was native Australian animals! Unfortunately he was dead centre of the coal mine industry And I’d I’ve spent the whole night with him had I known he wrote those beautiful songs Linda Ronstadt I loved The Shire got him to plant a tree in his honour! I was in HS when Werewolves of London broke big and Warren Zevon got a lot of press. There was a critic in one of the rock music magazines (there used to be several, and it wasn’t Rolling Stone) described his sound as “if you got drunk and played the piano by shooting the keys with a 44 Magnum, you’d sound a little like Warren Zevon. Just a little.” If ever there was Pulitzer worthy writing, that was a great example. No Internet back then, you just had to hunt for media about the musician you were into. Werewolves was an instant classic and put Warren on the map forever. He wrote and performed music like Hunter S. Thompson wrote prose and lived. We miss you, gents. But we’ll always have what you created.

The other Hindu Love Gods were Buck, Mills and Berry from R.E.M. They recorded the album in a drunken jam session in the late 80s, probably as a rehearsal for their work on Zevon's great LP Sentimental Hygiene, but the HLG wasn't released until 1990. The whole album is a fun listen, lots of blues covers too. Too bad the full band couldn't do the show.

Okay, first, how cheeky Warren Zevon was to sing a Prince song like this! Prince was beyond amazing and see his official video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/omjZg4arlNymhMU BUT BUT...Zevon is truly cool and brings out the song maybe better. He has a way of intonation that brings out the centerpiece of the song - and when it was warm she didn't wear much more. That great Prince line is front and center, not so much for the Prince version. And on top of this, how can you beat Sid MacGuiness as a lead guitarist. As he did for so many other Letterman performers, his solo work is simply perfect. Zevon with his black Les Paul is simply great as a performer and overall he communicates the song better than Prince. Yes....better than Prince!

Nothing against Will, Sid and Anton, but I'd rather see Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry backing Warren.

Fantastic song and the best cover existent from Price´s song... It´d be unpayable to see the 3 REM guys here together.Warren Zevon made this song a song of his own.

Warren Zevon wrote this song, of course it's " a song of his own."

Prince wrote this song. The Hindu Love Gods album is made up entirely of cover songs. Still, Warren and REM made it their own for sure, best version imo

Does anyone know why Warren never sung the verse “ When the rain hits the barn roof the horses wonder who you are. And “ I wouldn’t change a stroke cause baby I’m the most “ Can only imagine because it just wasn’t his style ? And are the band really members of REM .? Can you please name them Cheers I Met Warren in Central Queensland not long after this in 1990 was easy as because nobody knew who he was as he was playing with LRB . All he wanted to do was see our native wildlife But I had to break it to him that he was dead centre of coal mining country and it was like Hiroshima He was disgusted even then about the irreversible damage that has destroyed it forever Like everything he did he was way ahead on Conservation too

Man.. Letterman had such a great show.. I was only a kid then so the jokes didn't land but he always gave great musicians a place to showcase their talents. For that Dave goes down in history as one of mu favorite influencers of music. His new show on Netflix is fantastic, by the way, if you're into his style of interviewing.

Praise someone for their songwriting ability, then have the guest play a cover tune? Who on earth thinks they're a better musician than Prince? Zevon didn't even bring his own group to the gig. This is bar band level lame.
